Boston Area Forecast

2nd UPDATE 7:25AM to remove the Friday night portion and tweak Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (no major changes for the weekend other than a bit more cloudiness Sunday and introducing a slight risk of showers for Monday because I think the models may be missing a trigger for a few showers to possibly develop – more later if  necessary).

  1. Thanks TK for the update. 56 here. Fire on the deck tonight and am thinking it will be in the fireplace tomorrow night

    1. Vicki- You now have me thinking If I should light a fire tonight in the fireplace. Sure is a cool start today, more so than yesterday.

  2. SE New England has calm winds and fairly clear skies and the temps are flying down…

    48F in North Smithfield, RI
    50F in Provincetown
    52F in Marshfield

Hope the mosquitoes are cold !!!!!

  3. At 6am, Marshfield is 41F…….looks like the high thin clouds thinned the last few hours…..The one that surprised me is Logan, even the airport got under 50F, currently reporting 49F…..

  4. Bedford, Taunton, & Norwood all in the “Under 40 Club” this morning. Not a surprise really. It was clear enough and calm enough.

  5. Was 39 in Framingham when my grandson knocked on the door at 6:45 to invite us to breakfast. Haven’t heard from our son re how low temp got up in the notch but suspect it was chilly sleeping.

    1. Hi Coastal.

Fairly clear skies, a cool airmass and light winds argue for it to be as cold…..However, if the wind remains light east or northeast overnight, the marine layer could keep temps milder. I’ve seen this before this time of year, where its in the mid 30s ten or more miles inland, then a few miles from the coast…its in the low to mid 40s and right at the shore roads, its 50 to 55F. I wonder if this is going to be one of those nights.

  6. I guess It’s been snowing in the upper half of MT Washington New Hampshire. I am heading out in the yard to see If I have any dry wood. It will be cold tonight.

        1. He and about 14 friends are camping at the base of the presidentials in Crawford notch. There was snow on the mountains when they arrived yesterday

          1. Hi John.

Just a guess that winter is going to be mild. I think less blocking at high latitudes and thus no long lasting cold shots. When New England gets some cold air, I think it will be retreating quickly as storms approach to produce snow quickly changing to rain scenarios down here south of Boston.

  7. Well here is some good news for the temperature department this winter. From everything I am looking at indications are for temperatures to be near to slightly above normal so hopefully that will happen and give some help with the heating bill.

  8. Hi Tom- so do you think we have a good chance at a quiet winter regarding snow. JJ had just posted that he is seeing mild conditions to. I just hope we do not have a repeat of last winter. A quiet mild winter would be ok with me. Sorry snow lovers. The less the phone rings in the middle of the night is fine with me.

    1. Hi John.

Yes, I do think less snow than last winter. My guess is 24 to 29 inches and I’m going that high because, over four plus months of time, I figure the area will get one good sized snowfall. I just think less blocking which will have less storms going just south of New England and more going over us or to the region’s west. We’ll see. 🙂

  9. I am not seeing a repeat of last winter at all. My initial prediction is no more than 50 inches for Boston. I think temperatures will be at or slighlty above normal. Some of the reasons I am thinking this is the La Nina is going to be weaker and I don’t think were going to have as much blocking as we did last winter. That is not to say we won’t get coastal storms though. A couple of other things I look at is the temperatures in October and November. When the average below normal that tends to lead to colder and snowier winters. When the average above normal that tends to lead to a milder winter with below normal snowfall.
I will give my full winter outlook in November.

    1. I think you and I have similar ideas regarding the upcoming winter JJ. 🙂

Red Sox trailing after the first inning yet again. 🙁 Thank goodness they won last night !

  10. Its feels more like football weather than baseball weather out there today. I think its going to be a good game between the Patriots and Chargers tomorrow. Will see how many yards Brady throws for tomorrow but that defense has to improve from what is was against the Dolphins.

    1. Agreed……should be quite an entertaining game tomorrow. Tons of college football on today. I guess the big game is later….Oklahoma @ Florida State ?? Didnt know FSU was that good again.

  11. This will be a test for Florida State to see where they stand. I still think Oklahoma is the better team and will win the game but the Seminoles are an improved football team. The other big game to me is the Michigan State Notre Dame game and could you imagine the panic in South Bend if they Irish start 0-3.

    1. Yes, hasnt been the same there since the Lou Holtz era. I dont know why, but I’m not feeling much sympathy for Notre Dame, though I was rooting for them when Charlie Weis was head coach.

  12. There is high expectations for any coach there that its anything less than a championship or getting to one of the big BCS games and winning it is a bad season.

  13. Tom/JJ- Thank you both for that information, I hope that is how it plays out. Looking forward to the pats tomorrow, I think they get the job done. Loving the fact that 7 of the pats games start at 4:15. It could be 8 but not under 7. I think that is a perfect start time as you can get more done verses the 1:00 start.

  14. I like a 4:15 start too.

We have a fire in the fireplace and will be making fondue to eat by the fire shortly. Yes I’m rushing the season but I do that with every season. I dont mind less snow. We had leaks from ice dams everywhere but I do want a couple of BIG storms

        1. I alway’s enjoy the first fire. I burn here for the pleasure and it is not my source for the main heating. We have oil here and had gas when we lived in the city.
I miss the gas, more so for cooking. Gas on this street is not an option. I often think about getting a wood burning stove with a blower and use that for main heating. Not sure if they have stoves where you could still enjoy seeing the fire.

  15. John I am gonna disagree with Tom and JJ in regards to snow, I am thunk we get above 5o inches. La Ninia is getting stronger which will factor into our snow.

    1. Hi Hadi- I guess we can all try to figure it out, but mother nature will have the final say. Hoping for a mild easy winter.

    2. Almost impossible to predict the teleconnections 3-4 months from now, which will be a huge factor in how the winter shapes up.
Until then, I’m just going to enjoy the nice fall weather, with a few cool downs and warm ups along the way.

  16. Btw I am a good speller, but the iPhone auto corrects and the keypad can be tough. So sorry about some of the spelling errors:)

    1. Hadi I always know when someone is using an iPhone or iPad. They make the same auto corrects for everyone. And it’s easy to hit the i instead of o so you get a lot of nits instead of nots. You can turn off autocorrect but I think it does more right than wrong so I leave it on. This is the ling way of saying like hadi I apologize for spelling. And I’m leaving the ling instead of long to prove my point 🙂
