Tuesday Forecast

7:26AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 16-20)
We’ll still be in the wind zone between low pressure in eastern Canada and high pressure approaching from the Great Lakes / Ohio Valley today, a bright but blustery day. High pressure brings more tranquil weather for Wednesday. A warm front crosses the region Thursday with cloudiness and perhaps a little wet weather, then the warm sector takes over for the end of the week with clouds dominant and a rain shower threat which becomes greatest Friday night and Saturday.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 35-42. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind light SE.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Chance of rain overnight. Lows 45-52. Wind light SE to S.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of drizzle and light rain at times. Highs 55-60 coast, 61-66 interior. Wind light SE.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 48-55. Wind S increasing to 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Risk of passing rain showers. Highs 58-63 South Coast, 63-68 just inland from the South Coast and south-facing portions of the eastern MA coast, 68-75 elsewhere. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers likely. Lows 51-58. Wind S 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers likely. Highs 61-68 except 55-60 South Coast. Wind S 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 21-25)
Upper level low pressure drifts from the Tennessee Valley to just south of New England while gradually weakening early to mid period, replaced by a second one before that one pulls away. This is an unsettled pattern overall with the greatest wet weather threats in the April 22-24 time frame as it stands now. Temperatures near to slightly above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 26-30)
Another low pressure area may impact the region with occasional wet weather favoring April 27-28 before drier weather and a shot of cooler air to end the month.

  1. First? πŸ™‚ Anyways with the talk of the ski areas yesterday Vicki brought up a good point. There are many ski areas that were struggling or even closed that have reopened or are doing better. Its a mix of many things. 1. The technology is so much better and is starting to get cheaper so these smaller operations are able to afford them. Some of the old Mtns are now being runned by Universities. There is one up in NH that is running solely on wind power. I haven’t gone yet but I want to. My dad was upset it closed 30 years ago. Another reason why these smaller operations are returning is because of the Mtns you think of like stratton, Mtn Snow even Gunstock are so much more expensive than they use to be so more people go to these other smaller MTNs and do it more often. Also when I say smaller operations that does not mean smaller Mtns.

    1. All very true. Even Cranmore took a really tough hit and it was one of the go to ski areas when I was younger.

Which one are you talking about in NH that closed 30 years ago?

        1. Thank you, JPD and Matt. I don’t recall Tenney. I was wondering if it were King Ridge. We used to take day trips to ski it when we didn’t head to North Conway.

          1. I have skied Tenney a few times. It was very nice mountain with ample vertical drop, “about” 1500 feet or so? If memory serves me.

    2. I should have added that we used to pay $7 for a half day ticket. It was when a family of four could actually afford to ski most every weekend.

  2. Thank you, TK.

It is blustery and it feels great. Isn’t helping my cough and congestion since it adds allergies (which I somehow only developed in the past couple of years), but I love it anyway.

  3. Good morning and thank you TK.
Mid April, and I just had three (3) successive days of 70+. πŸ™‚
    Not too shabby.
    Loooooking good.

  4. Thanks TK.

Let the record show: all the concern about a prolonged -NAO torpedoing this month was much ado about nothing. A good reminder to be very cautious in using long range guidance, especially when it comes to timing/duration. It reminds me of the projections for an extended cold spell this past winter; models correctly identified the potential for an extreme cold blast, but greatly exaggerated its duration. Similarly here, we did get a -NAO, but not a very strong one, and not long in duration like a lot of weekly guidance had shown. The prevailing synoptic pattern remains a warm one, and that’s what we’ve seen the past few days, and what we’ll continue to see a lot of (not every day, of course) going forward.

    1. AS long as it doesn’t get HOT. 70s to low 80s fine. Keep the hot stuff the hell away from here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Then I can assume no renegade snow events in our future and that Logan can put its snowfall total for 2018-19 at 27.4 inches in the books? πŸ™‚

        #26 least snowiest

        1. History shows that on April 16 it is still too soon to call final.

          That hasn’t changed. πŸ™‚

  5. In case you had not seen this. Not weather related – but uplifting.

    A Godincidence to me…

    Reported in the NYT

In a miracle of timing, the sculptures of the Twelve Apostles and 4 New Testament evangelists that were on Notre-Dame’s spire escaped the fire at the cathedral, after they were removed for restoration just days before the blaze.

    1. This is hysterical. I can see my son in law doing the exact same. He typically shovels in short sleeves and shorts.

  6. Vicki, your comment on the miracle at Notre Dame is something I saw late last night on youtube. See link below.

It’s remarkable that during Christianity’s holy week the 12 apostles and 4 new testament evangelists escaped the devastating fire unscathed because they were removed Thursday last week.

And then there’s the story of Father Fournier and the rescue of the Crown of Thorns:

  7. Mark good luck to your Islanders as they go for the sweep tonight against Pittsburgh. I never would have thought Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay would have a chance to be swept in the first round.

    1. Thanks JJ. I hope they polish them off tonight. Don’t want to give them any life and hopes that they can get back in the series. It is not going to be easy!

  8. 4-6″ of new snow at Jay Peak this AM and back to 100% operational. Base still holding strong at 36″-54″.

Up to 419″ on the season now.

  9. Updated Mount Mansfield summit snow depth chart still holding strong at nearly 120″.

The black line in the graph represents “average” snow depth throughout the course of the year while the blue represents 2018-2019. Snow depth is way above normal for this time of year, and has been consistently above normal since mid November.

      1. thing we have going in SNE including southern NH and VT is that the ground is soft and plants are starting to suck up water which they have been for some time now.

  10. Some unbelievable things happening in sports. On a very positive note for me, Amsterdam Ajax beat Juventus. They’re headed to the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time in over 20 years. Ajax has always been my favorite soccer team. They play with imagination, wonderful technique, speed, and an attacking style that never sits back to defend.

On a sour note that appears to just not go away, the Red Sox are playing as if they’re still inebriated from the champagne from the World Series celebration. They’re pitiful at this point. In all my years of following baseball I have never seen a team that kept most of its talent be so abysmal in the early going after a championship season.

On a truly incredible note, both the Islanders and Blue Jackets look poised to sweep their series. Tampa Bay’s ousting from the playoffs is astounding.

    1. Awesome win by the Islanders tonight. I had confidence they could win the series but would have never imagined a sweep of the Penguins. Loving it.

I am particularly stunned by the lightning series. Best team in NHL history in the regular season and swept off the rug in the first round. Pretty embarrassing. I would not be surprised if Jon Cooper is fired by the end of the week. If the Bruins get past Toronto they are going to have their hands full with Columbus for sure.

    2. And great job by Paxton tonight. Sale? Not so much. Red Sox back in front of the Yankees for now in the battle for last πŸ™‚
