Some Small Systems

5:20PM

3 small systems will impact the weather in southeastern New England during the next 7 days, one this evening, one Saturday evening, and one early Tuesday, based on current timing.

The first one is a cold front passing by this evening but with limited shower activity, however still serving to push some muggy air out of the region and replace it with cooler and drier air by Friday into Saturday.

The second system will be a weak double barrel low pressure area passing by Saturday night from southwest to northeast. The first low will move through the eastern Great Lakes and keep most of its moisture north and west of here. The other low will move out south of New England and it currently looks like the greatest chance of wet weather from that will be occurring over RI and southeastern MA. All of this will be offshore by Sunday which will be another cooler, dry day, with this weather lasting through most of Monday as well, though with a bit of a warm-up later Monday.

The third system looks like a weak low pressure area moving through early Tuesday of next week with a shower threat and another shot of cooler and drier air following it.

Patience In Blog & Weather

3:25PM

A quick note to all the readers here, whether you are just a lurker or a regular comment contributor: As you can tell I’ve been trying out several different blog styles. These are provided by WordPress, and are limited. I am likely to get some others in the next few days so the trials will go on for a while. Please have patience while I see what works best for all. It’s possible that we end up back on the old boring set-up as well. But I think giving the different styles a try is worth it first!

As for the weather, the humidity is coming back, or is actually back now, just not as noticeable as it was on a light easterly wind and with limited sunshine Wednesday with areas of low cloudiness from the ocean. But the wind will turn southerly ahead of a cold front tonight and Thursday and you’ll feel the humidity more, especially as it warms up Thursday with lots of clouds and some limited sun. The front will slice through the region Thursday night, with showers and thunderstorms, then clear the coast on Friday, which will end up a bright and drier day. The weekend should be mostly decent, but a weak system coming along from the west late Saturday to first thing Sunday will cause an interruption to the nice weather with lots of clouds and some risk of showers. Fair and pleasant weather returning for the end of the weekend will continue Monday. Another weak system may be in the vicinity early Tuesday of next week with another shot of dry air following this.

Edging

11:31PM

Southeastern New England will sit on the edge of a couple waves of low pressure through Wednesday, close enough for some cloudiness but rain should remain mostly offshore. The air flow between low pressure to the south and high pressure to the north will be easterly, and may bring in enough low level moisture for some low clouds and perhaps some drizzle for a time Tuesday night or early Wednesday. By Thursday, we’ll get rid of those lows and be in a southerly flow ahead of an approaching cold front. Current timing suggests this front will come through early Friday with a threat of showers, then introduce a drier and cool air mass for the weekend followed by a slight warm-up heading into early next week.

Astronomically high tides associated with the Full Harvest Moon may be enhanced by the easterly flow through Tuesday night, resulting in some minor coastal flooding in areas prone to it.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Patchy drizzle early. Highs middle 60s coast to lower 70s inland. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers/thunderstorms at night. Low 56. High 76.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Chance of showers eastern areas early. Low 55. High 69.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 45. High 65.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 43. High 67.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 48. High 69.

The Week Ahead

3:45PM

The September heat is gone, though the overall pattern is still mild to warm. However, compared to last week, this coming week will feel much more pleasant. It starts wonderfully with high pressure centered north of the region Monday, delivering pleasant air on a northeast wind that has not spent much time passing over water, but rather eastern Canada, so it will be on the dry side. This high retreats a little bit Tuesday and Wednesday as a smaller low pressure area to the south tries to push to the north. Expect increasing cloudiness Monday night and Tuesday, decreasing by later Wednesday. The question is, does any rain from the low make it into the area. For now, the thinking is that there is a risk of some in southern sections, but probably not very much. A warm-up is slated  for the end of the week and a series of cold fronts will then try to push in from the west, bringing some risk of showers, especially Thursday. Next weekend looks dry and pleasant at this time as high pressure should be moving into the region. One caution is that we may need to watch the last of the fronts moving offshore in case it slows down.

A Sliced Weekend

3:34PM

9:27AM Saturday morning edit to remove the Friday night forecast portion.

Heat and humidity came back in on Friday with sunshine & a few clouds, along with that hazy look that we did not see a whole lot of during the middle of the Summer. This air mass will continue to be with us in southeastern New England into Saturday, but will be pushed out of here by a cold front that crosses the region from northwest to southeast Saturday afternoon and evening, accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. With this front cutting into the very warm and muggy air mass, and sufficient instability, some of the storms may be strong to severe.  There will also be areas that escape the worst of this and end up with very little action with the front. Once this front clears the region overnight, it will set up a couple very nice days Sunday and Monday. Toward Tuesday and the middle of next week, the weather may go downhill as an area of low pressure forming along the stalled front once its to our south will try to toss clouds and some wet weather back into this area.

FORECAST FOR SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND…

SATURDAY: Partly sunny and hazy. Heavier clouds with a risk of showers and thunderstorms northwest to southeast mid afternoon through early evening. Any storms may be strong to severe. Muggy. Highs in the 80s, may hit 90 in a few locations, some upper 70s South Coast / Cape Cod. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms early, but ending northwest to southeast. Drying late. Lows around 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs in the 70s. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 53. High 73.

TUESDAY: Increasing clouds. Low 54. High 72.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain. Low 56. High 75.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 55. High 73.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain. Low 55. High 70.

Reheating

3:30AM

High pressure again sinks south of New England during the next 3 days and allows some September heat and humidity back into the region, especially Friday into Saturday. However, a cold front will slice across the area Saturday. Current indications are timing will be little faster with this front, limiting the chance of showers and thunderstorms to Saturday itself and allowing Sunday to turn out nicer, though there may be some cloudiness around at times. Cooler and drier air will flow into the region on Sunday and last into the start of next week.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

TODAY: Sunny. Highs 77-88, coolest South Coast. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows in the 60s. More humid. Wind SW 5-10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 79-90, coolest South Coast. Humid. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny and hazy. Scattered thunderstorms. Humid. Low 68. High 89.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Less humid. Low 61. High 79.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 53. High 71.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 50. High 73.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 53. High 75.

SUMteMbER

Think about it. 🙂

8:57PM

Here’s what’s up with the weather. The Summertime pattern is here and will continue into next week, despite a cool interruption along the way. But to get there, we have to go through several more warm to hot days. However, Tuesday’s oppressive dew points will be gone for midweek as it is somewhat less humid and not as hot, but still quite warm. By Thursday night and Friday, the humidity will return as high pressure which moves in behind a cold front Wednesday slides offshore by then. The next front will approach this coming weekend, but at this point the timing of this front is uncertain. I have been leaning toward a slower timing, and continue to do this. This scenario would mean a hot/humid Saturday but a thunderstorm threat potentially for late day or night, and an unsettled day with cooling air for Sunday. If things move along enough, we may enjoy a cool/dry day Monday before another warm-up ensues.

FORECAST FOR SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND…

OVERNIGHT: Clouds return west to east. Scattered showers and a risk of a thunderstorm northern MA and southern NH after midnight. Isolated showers and a slight risk of a thunderstorm southern MA to northern RI after 2AM. Most areas will see no showers/storms. Humid. Lows 66-72. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Lots of clouds to start, then turning mostly sunny. Less humid. Highs in the 80s, some upper 70s Cape Cod. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 58-66. Wind light W.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-85. Wind W to SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 66. High 89.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Risk of t-storms late. Low 68. High 91, cooler South Coast.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 65. High 82.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 70.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 75.

Enter Summer?

4:36PM

So it’s September. The first month of Meteorological Autumn. Those first really crisp days and chilly nights are here, right? Wrong! It’s still Summer, and the pattern reflects this. Despite the fact that a cold front slid into the region late Sunday, it’s not doing a whole lot of cool/dry air delivery, and in fact it’s really just washing out as upper level high pressure remains dominant, and will do so through most of this week. A southwesterly surface flow will allow heat and humidity to gain full control Tuesday, but another cold front will try to cut into this with a shower and thunderstorm risk in the afternoon and evening. Slightly drier air will arrive Wednesday, which will still be a warm day, as will Thursday. And as we head toward the end of the week, it still remain warm to very warm, with humidity returning again Friday into Saturday. A stronger cold front may move through later in the weekend with showers and thunderstorms. Timing of this is uncertain this far in advance, but for now I’m going to lean toward a slower timing with impact more Sunday versus Saturday.
