  1. Sooooo I’d sure be interested in thoughts on Chili’s spike in covid. The son of Macs cousin lives there with his GF. She is a physician. The lockdown seems to me to be one of the most severe. They can leave their homes once (or twice…I forget) a week for absolute necessities but need to apply for a pass first. I think Chile May have let up a bit on restrictions for a while but put them back in place. But I honestly cannot recall.

How does it get this bad with such tight restrictions.

    1. I hope your family there is OK. The situation is severe and I think I read something about their chief health czar had to resign. Yes, I think they returned to biz as usual a little too soon. The one thing I did read is that there are food shortages which is causing protests some of which have been violent.

      1. Thank you Longshot. I was amazed at how strict it is but suspect you are right about too little too late. Or a lot too late.

        1. Hopefully nothing like that happens here in this country as we continue to go through our own reopening process. The racial and economic strife isn’t helping matters.

  2. Chile is in some trouble, as are several countries in South America. The lockdowns can help to a degree, but because between 67% and 80% of transmission takes place within households (check the NY data, for example, or Italy and France), you’ll see continued high levels of cases for a long time. I haven’t studied the possible impact of reopening in Chile.

Our weekend data are troubling, with the weekly caveat that reporting isn’t as accurate and timely. Still seeing significant numbers of new cases in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. Also, hospitalizations are rising in a number of regions in those states. Outbreaks have also been noted in Oregon, Washington State, and a number of other places. Does any of this have to do with the protests? Unclear. We’d have to see if cases increase in other places where there have been protests. I’ve seen some signs of increase, but not consistent.

The good news is the death rate continues to decline. Also globally I’m seeing signs of persistent decrease. So, although record numbers of cases are being recorded globally on a daily basis most days this week, deaths have come down a bit. This does suggest the possibility of weakening of the virus, but certainly not to the point where it’s not dangerous.

Of course, there are other hypotheses. More testing globally yields more asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic cases. And, as the epicenter has shifted to South America, parts of Asia (eg, Pakistan), and Africa, the virus is encountering a much younger demographic.

  3. Two more minor developments, but still should be mentioned.

The Netherlands has reopened. The process began one month ago. It has done well with reopening. One of the reasons is a very strict implementation of physical distancing rules. Cafes/restaurants that don’t adhere to the 1.5 meter (5 feet) rule get shut down. Not just a steep fine. They’re closed until further notice. Sort of like what happens here when there’s a health violation cited at a restaurant. The civilian police corps ensure that businesses adhere to the physical distancing rules. Clearly, this is something that many states in the U.S just don’t do at all.

Second item is a concerning outbreak in Peking/Beijing. Again, outdoor meat markets may be to blame. So far, it’s been limited to around 70 new cases. Yet, it has to be concerning that another meat market may be the culprit. Parts of the capital are in lockdown once again.

I offer the latter paragraph as a warning to anyone who sincerely believes the virus is a hoax, overblown, same as the flu, etc … The Chinese are taking this minor outbreak very seriously. They’re also reporting it to the world. I realize they should have been more forthcoming at the beginning of this year. But, the fact that we know about this and the Chinese are responding with a partial lockdown suggests just how serious this contagion is. We’re fooling ourselves into complacency when we think otherwise.

    1. Joshua more words of wisdom. Thank you for Chile info. I will call Macs cousin tonight. Both she and her husband work closely with healthcare. Her sister in Seattle had mentioned when we chatted that they were starting to see a slight uptick. May be now seeing more. Tough call in protests. As worrisome as they have been, I will never support taking away our constitutional rights.

As far as a hoax…..I keep hearing that this is planned by dems and If trump loses that it will go away in November since the dems have planned this. What the heck happened to the agility for some to think logically.

We are going to be in very serious trouble if we have an uptick and need to try and recluse.

      1. I forgot. There is a gym in oxford out this way that has refused to close or require masks. Why the hell they have no been shut down and heavily fined is beyond me.

  4. Although I cannot possible think about the next school year, here’s a story I just read about how Rhode Island is apparently ending snow days in the future:

    boston.cbslocal.com/2020/06/10/snow-days-rhode-island-virtual-learning-coronavirus-school/

We did get great news from the Middleborough Public Schools Friday morning that, as of now, there will be no layoffs of any staff for the SY 20-21! The town will use surplus money from this school year plus part of the rainy day fund to save municipal jobs.

    1. I’m actually sad about the snow days. I understand the decision in RI to more or less do away with them – unless there are power outages, I guess. But, as a child growing up I fondly remember listening to the radio (WBZ) and hearing “No School in …” and waiting for my town to be announced. I loved snow days. I know my children also loved snow days. I do understand that teachers view snow days differently.

  5. Scenes this weekend – INDOORS! – that tell me we’re never going to learn. Covidiots.

    Nashville club:

    Phoenix club:

The two states where these scenes took place – Arizona and Tennessee – are seeing significant increases in new cases. Arizona is seeing significant increases in hospitalizations and ICU usage. Texas is also seeing significant increases in hospitalizations and ISU usage.

Yaneer Bar-Yam’s fire plot for the U.S. He incorrectly said that yesterday’s number of new cases (25k) was the most in a month. Friday’s 28k (!) was the highest.

In light of the evidence, I think Oklahoma’s governor would be in his rights to prohibit an indoor rally, but allow an outdoor one. I’m very concerned about an indoor rally, because of the age of the participants.

  6. Covidiots. How perfect is that.

Joshua I mentioned to my oldest on phone conversation tonight how RI is Doing a great job. She said they are doing a horrific job maintaining distancing. They go for a ride at night. Mostly into RI. She said literally everywhere is packed to the gills. The parking lots are full to capacity. I know a lot from this area have been going there for a while since all is open. Makes me wonder what they are reporting or not reporting. I thought they were doing an excellent job
