  1. Thank you, TK, for continuing to give us a place to hopefully find some information on covid

Joshua….I’m a bit worried this means that if another country develops a vaccine, etc. that we won’t have access to it. And frankly it worries me that if we develop a vaccine, other countries won’t be given access. In a normal world, I would not be concerned.

    1. I just happened to post an article about coronavirus vaccine distribution this morning: https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/09/02/multiple-us-decision-making-entities-complicate-task-of-allocating-coronavirus-vaccines/#4c5b01eb24c0

Hopefully, WHW folks understood my “crap” reference after reading the article I posted yesterday on wastewater analysis: https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/09/01/predicting-a-covid-19-outbreak-with-wastewater-analysis/#715c840518dc

      1. Excellent article. Thank you

Joshua, do we know if the configuration of ACIP has been altered to favor the president

I wonder how the question was asked to determine how many Americans will get the vaccine once available. I would probably answer no if asked would I get first round. I’m old enough to remember the swine flu vaccine and know 1918 initially had problems. And these don’t stand alone. But once verified that there are not serious side effects, I’d surely get the vaccine.

        1. That may be because I wrote yesterday “my latest Forbes article is a piece of crap.” Now, you know what I meant.

The draft guidance from the federal government that was released yesterday suggests healthcare workers and essential professionals will be prioritized first. Then, a few months later, the at risk groups (elderly and those with serious underlying health conditions). Then, a few months later healthy individuals. If all goes smoothly, which it won’t, we could all be vaccinated by next May. I’m doubtful. I think many won’t vaccinate. I also think there will be issues with distribution, just as there were with Covid-19 treatments, like remdesivir.

  2. I have been under the impression that there was no “vaccine” for the 1918 epidemic but that the flu eventually just died out on its own. It ran out of victims, so to speak. If this is correct then there is no precedent for vaccine distribution for a worldwide pandemic.

My grandmother and great aunt went through it and got sick themselves, but they never mentioned any vaccine or medicine for that matter.

    1. There were multiple vaccines. Just not effective. And I do understand we have far more knowledge now than we did in 1918. I am hesitant when it comes to new vaccines under normal circumstances….I’m still debating shingles as I have friends who have had reactions….and friends who have not. But this is true even more so now with trump trying to rush one before November. There are two main reasons for this and we know what they are.

  3. Fauci said we could have a vaccine much sooner than expected, but hope that politics do not get involved with the decision making by the experts. Could be before X-Mas and New Years Eve.
In terms of who could get it like Joshua said healthcare workers and essential professions will get be able to get it first. I will also add something I personally know through talking with some people that are up there in decision making at the hospital. Hospitals are also wanting the medical professionals immediate families to also be included.

    1. I agree with joshuas comments on who receives vaccines first. I would agree with immediate family and think immediate families of all who are on front line and exposed regularly should be head of line

  4. We were informed at my place of work that we’d be high on the list of the first to get a vaccine. I feel very fortunate.

  5. Dave, essential workers will include teachers but probably not in the very first batch of vaccines. You will be next up, though. I think they want to make sure healthcare workers – including anyone working at a hospital or clinic – get first dibs. The good thing is there will likely be multiple vaccines by February. And so, I don’t believe shortages will be an issue next spring.

    1. As I think about that, why would family of healthcare workers come before teachers and others in front lines.

  6. According to Dr. Fauci, how people behave on Labor Day weekend will determine what happens in the fall during the anticipated second wave.

Is this second wave really that inevitable?

  7. Forgive me if I appear selfish but is it possible to have the vaccine distributed to everyone at the same time? Readily available at every CVS and Walgreens? Doctors offices? Hospitals? Health Centers? Homeless Shelters? etc. etc.

    1. Very sad that this pandemic, at least in this country has turned so political. Yes, I want a vaccine ASAP but at the same time not a “rush” job before trials are completed that the vaccine may be totally useless if not perhaps just as harmful as the virus itself.
