  1. With these different variants of Covid showing different potent levels, I really hope Biden restricts travel for the next 6 months to essential travel and keeps outside travel to bare minimum

    1. Excellent article. Thanks, Dave.

I continue to believe the big picture is being missed in a few areas.

Schools are not made up of just children. We are at the point where the number of teachers who are out either sick or quarantining is increasing. As a result, the teachers who are well enough are instructing classes from home via zoom to the classroom. In some cases, several classes are combined in an auditorium where one teacher works with all via zoom. I don’t understand how this differs from remote learning except to expose more to the virus.

Sutton has very strict procedures. Parents are sending their kids sick. This is not new. Many parents have always sent their kids when ill which is wrong on every level. But now, it is far more dangerous Even the new testing for in school is for kids who are In the school sick rather than a preventive to keep kids from arriving in school sick.

Parents of hybrid kids say their kids are struggling. And that is a shame. The full remote kids I know….and in addition to my four grandkids there are many….are not struggling. If there is a problem, it is one that would occur inside or outside school. Full remote teachers have worked really hard to perfect the process. It seems to me that bouncing from hybrid to remote and on and on has made it difficult to perfect either method

No matter how strict procedures are, every special Ed teacher I have spoken to or listened to has said it is impossible to keep masks on their kids or to keep a distance. This to me is our largest area of concern. Kids for the most part are resilient. I don’t agree that they are losing out on socialization. But how to help kids who need extra help is difficult. I do know that my three grands who have IEPs are receiving the help they need. But I believe others are not. I’d love to hear suggestions on this

Also, I sure don’t agree school is the safest place for kids. Home is the safest. And I understand there are exceptions. I know some kids are tragically not safe at home. I know teachers often recognize the at risk kids. I will ask what we do during summer for these same kids. And I will also ask what precludes a teacher who is face to face and often in a one on one setting from recognizing a problem.

Just some thoughts. I absolutely understand why people want kids in school. I think we all want kids in school. For me, it is as long as it is safe and productive.

      1. Biden addressed schools in his speech yesterday. He wants all “in person” learning by spring. Hopefully his ideas will be able to assist the states on this.

  2. I fully believe that kids that are having issues with the online are the ones that are playing games or looking at something not paying attention.
There is a difference between what schools use to call “online” and what is “online now” Previously online did not include face to face instruction by video call it was a bunch of assignments and you had to email the professor. You usually never actually saw the professor in person. These you have a set time, date and visual of the professor. I for one actually liked going online and my grades actually improved.. PS less group projects which I had to rely on other people so instantly my grades started to improve while the students that didn’t do their fair share suffered. The group projects I did have, I could choose who to work with.

I will say this though, kids are being asked to do do the learning but none of the fun activities of school (recess/gym/after school activities) even when they are being sent to the school, so everything that they are doing in person could be all done online. There are those with disabilities that can do better with in person learning but, they can also do better when they are given time.

    1. These are in many cases the same kids who would be goofing off in school. I have never believed in playing to the lowest common denominator. As far as fun. Boy do I disagree. Every day, my grandsons just here have a new adventure at least one of their teachers has taken them on. And during every single break, my grands run by me and head outside to explore and play. My grandson with adhd and who touches on the spectrum is excelling. I know it can be done. I just don’t think it can be done piecemeal which is what you are seeing so for that I agree. It is all In or nothing.

For what it is worth, I have a friend in Sutton that I believe I have mentioned. Her youngster is home schooled. She is probably the most well adjusted child I have ever seen as well as charming.

      1. Not all are goofing off Vicki. There are some students that just are not doing well with remote learning who were A/B students prior to the pandemic, hardly goof offs. Since I am not an educator nor even a parent, I have no explanation. Only the struggling students know for sure. Most elementary, secondary and college students desperately want to go back to full time in-person learning.

  3. I usually don’t post here, but our law enforcement community down here has been hit really hard by Covid-19 in recent weeks. Of the three Massachusetts police fatalities from Covid-19 during the pandemic, two have been from northern Bristol County. Taunton patrolman John Borges’s funeral Mass was last week here in the City. He died on Christmas Eve. And Det. Sgt. Stephen Desfosses will be buried from my church in Norton this coming Wednesday.

Please pray for the eternal rest of their souls, and for their families and friends, especially for the Blue of the TPD and the NPD.

    So scary. So sad.

    1. With a deep sigh, not a day goes by that I don’t pray for our men and women in blue. They are facing so much now from so many directions. I am so so sad to read your post, Captain. My son has said that his facility has a good deal of covid. Some are being vaccinated now.

  4. I wish more WHW regulars (including TK) would post here, to ask questions, give opinions or just to vent. There has really been very little “weather” to speak of around here since prior to Christmas and none really expected for at least the immediate future.
This worldwide pandemic effects EVERYONE daily once you step outside your doors, just having to wear a mask, if nothing else.

    1. I’ve actually posted on here a few times this week, which is more than I probably did during the entire holiday season. 😉

We talk about C-19 at work A LOT. When I get to my laptop or phone after work, it’s usually not very high up on my list of topics I want to chat about. I’m very much into my weather, music, & photography once I get some free time. 🙂

As far as very little weather to speak of…. I don’t agree at all. From the discussion I, WxW, and JMA have given, you’ll see there is quite a lot to talk about. We’re currently in a major blocking pattern. Some of the coldest/snowiest weather in years has been occurring in Europe/Asia. Meanwhile, Boston’s running a long streak of days without a below normal temperature day. That’s weather. There is a lot to talk about.

      1. The major blocking pattern is blocking a lot of potential storms to our south that we could be talking about on the other side. We really should be having a totally white landscape for as far as the eye can see at this time of year. 😉

Yes TK, you have been contributing here as well. In fact, thank you for providing it. I was mostly encouraging some WHW regulars to contribute on this side once in awhile, just as a change of pace, if they feel comfortable of course. 🙂

    1. I think it was dropped because our Governor was being sure & knows this was not hold in the court of law . As part of my employment I need too get the shot it’s mandatory but why would you not get it . I’m not a fan of ordering the flu shot for folks who do not want it as it’s there choice not your choice baker .

  5. The IRS is delaying tax season until February 12. Normally it begins in early January.

This is all due to Covid-19, of course.

  6. My workplace has yet again sent out a “notice of non exposure” this one was worded differently:

“ Our contact tracing team has determined that the positive cases today, are unrelated to the positive case you were notified of yesterday. After thorough review, it has been determined that you were not on the list of those directly exposed. It is also important to note the building is disinfected each night, plus the day porters are disinfecting each counter, break room, rest room, and office more than the suggested amounts throughout the day.”

I put emphasis on the word cases above. So not only did someone test positive Tuesday – someone tested positive Thursday – a multiple unknown amount of people tested positive today. At what point do you close the building down when there is obvious spread?!
