  1. Covid-19 has obviously changed a lot of things. And now because of passage of the relief bill it’s going to cause a lot of tax disruption. For those who received unemployment they will be eligible for an exemption (essentially a tax deduction) of up to $10,200. Many people have already filed and will therefore be amending their returns to get their refund.

I filed my taxes in mid February, only to later receive a 1099-DIV and a K-1 form this week (!). This has never happened before; so late. So, I’ll have to amend, too, but in order to pay more taxes (no refund). However, can’t amend until the end of this month because the relief bill is causing delays at Turbo Tax and other tax preparers who have to account for the changes in their software programs. I think amending taxes in TT is relatively easy if you purchased the premier package, which I did (self-employed package). But still it’s a pain in the neck.

    1. Yeah—when I filed I hadn’t received my round 2 stimulus direct deposit so I entered it on Turbo Tax to add it to my refund. It appeared direct deposit a couple hours after I filed so now I need to amend as I don’t think they want to give it to me twice.

    2. Not only will folks have to amend, but the IRS will have to rebuild its process. My accountant is holding off submitting to avoid amending. Fine with me as I always owe. I wonder if deadline will be extended. I didn’t even know there was a second stimulus since I don’t get one.

  2. I have some colleagues who were denied unemployment benefits because part of their income is documented on W-2’s (even part-time work) and some on 1099’s. Virtually all their work got canceled last March, and most of it isn’t back yet. They weren’t permitted to apply based on the total of both types of income, and neither “half” on its own did anything much. Very tough year for people in multiple part-time jobs.

    1. Indeed it has been. I’m lucky as I inherited some money from my mother, who passed away in late 2019. Enough to supplement my dwindling income for a year or two. But, my business was gutted in 2020 (about a 60% decline in earnings). Long-term research projects that I was slated to begin in May and July of last year have been put on hold – and I think will be canceled entirely. My clients are now looking for immediate results and marketing projects, and the kind of healthcare-related consulting I do doesn’t offer immediate results or marketing. It’s a depressing reality.

  3. Chart showing the current poor performers (countries). Massive surges across Central and Eastern Europe, even in countries with quite reasonable vaccination rates (eg, Hungary).

Seeing some spillover into neighboring countries, as Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France are all experiencing increases in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. This is a feisty virus. Not quitting without a pitched battle.

    1. I know you have covered this but just want to confirm….is a good portion of the surges due to lack of vaccine?

  4. There are too few vaccination locations in this state. On the morning news there was a state map and the only site in the western part is located in Springfield then on the Cape, the only site is at CC Community College. Even in Boston, the only ones I know of are Fenway Park and Reggie Lewis Center, and the former will be closing soon once baseball season begins. I suppose Gillette Stadium represents interior SE MA.

Joshua, why can’t there be more sites? Why not open fields and parking lots if necessary? I bet there are more locations to get marijuana than a Covid vaccine around here. I took a brief walk around my neighborhood earlier this afternoon and the streets totally reek with the smell.

    1. There are not more sites because the governor has been removing the ability from local BOHs, etc. Hannaford supermarket has them in Uxbridge which is a few miles from me. The Uxbridge BOH has been working on opening a school no longer being used as a mass vaccine site. We really have nothing in this area that can do more than four vaccines per hour which is useless

Anyway hannaford was going to partner with the mass site in Uxbridge and the powers that be denied the request

    2. Baker did make me laugh out loud when he said drive throughs are difficult because you don’t know how many vaccines to prepare, etc. How odd other states are doing drive through….. Marshfield Ma is doing drive through, NH is Doing drive through so colder states can do it

  5. Philip, you’re right about too few vaccination sites. We can easily have more of those.

Vicki, the problems in Europe are twofold: Lack of vaccine supply coupled with vaccine hesistancy; many Central and Eastern European countries dropping their guard about 1 month ago.

The Dutch have not dropped their guard, and you can see that in their transmission rate. It’s going up but not nearly at the rate of many other countries.

I should add B117 is another reason much of Europe is seeing another wave.

Poor Poland. Numbers today are disastrous – take a look at the test positivity rate of 28%: https://twitter.com/BNODesk/status/1370833735717957635

I’m concerned now that Europe won’t be ready by summer to reopen. The UK will (and we’re more or less open already), but not Europe. The vaccination pace across most of Europe is snail-like.

  6. Joshua, do we need to be concerned about that B117 coming over here? Or will our vaccination rate do the trick? I heard on the radio this morning that there is a 3rd wave coming to Europe, if it’s not there already.

Hard to believe Europe’s vaccination rates are actually slower than the state of MA. I don’t see how all teachers can be vaccinated in time for April at this rate, especially since they will have to get in line like everyone else.

    1. I’m a bit less concerned about B117 in the U.S. than I was last month because of our furious pace of vaccinations. We’ve vaccinated at a tremendously rapid clip, notwithstanding quite a number of problems which you and others have noted. B117 is trying to penetrate but can’t get a firm enough foothold to do a lot of damage.

B117 is wreaking havoc across Europe, and in many Central and Eastern European countries the situation is dire, worse than at any time during the pandemic. The Czech Republic has vaccinated (with 1 dose) about 10% of the population; Hungary about 13%. Yet, they couldn’t prevent a cataclysmic surge. I’ve been in touch with a colleague in Brno, Czech Republic. It’s worse than NYC ever was. They have no capacity left in the hospitals and are sending patients to other countries in the region. Death rate is very high. Hungary is similar. Unfortunately, France and Italy are kind of headed in that direction. Austria and even Switzerland may follow, whihc is truly incredible. Not even Germany will escape this wave. Will we be spared? I think we may be spared because we’ve vaccinated so many people already. I’m still concerned and cautious. We’ll have to wait and see. In any event, Covid isn’t done with the world. Worldwide it’s infecting at a much higher rate now than 3 weeks ago, with multiple variants. As I said before, even if we escape relatively unscathed going forward, many other nations will not be so lucky. I think parts of Europe will be shut down through most of 2021. It’s that bad.
