Saturday June 5 2021 Forecast (8:48AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 5-9)

Early June heat will be the theme of the next 5 days, starting to build in today as high pressure ridging aloft starts to build in from the west while surface high pressure slides toward the Mid Atlantic States from the Midwest. A disturbance will cross northern New England today where there will be showers and thunderstorms, and we’ll see an assortment of clouds mostly to the distant north from this activity, but here in the WHW forecast area we will just see some cumulus clouds pop up with the heating of the day working on residual moisture at the surface, but the warming of the air mass aloft will keep this activity from building enough to produce any showers or storms in this area – just decorative clouds being the result. The high pressure ridge will edge eastward and increase the heat Sunday and Monday. Moderate humidity today may come down slightly for Sunday before coming back up a bit Monday, but there will not be any showers or storms popping in the daytime heat these days as it will be too stable. We may see some occasional higher level clouds crossing the sky, leftover debris from thunderstorms that pop up in the Midwest and Great Lakes. Heat hangs on Tuesday when the humidity will increase as high pressure to the south is able to tap more moisture and send it our way, and this may result in the development of some afternoon showers and thunderstorms that day – something to watch for. The next thing to monitor is the timing of a cold front dropping down from the north on Wednesday. Later timing allows one more at least partial day of heat and humidity. Quicker timing would limit this. Leaning toward later timing for now but not with high confidence. We’ll also have the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms accompanying this front at some point during Wednesday.

TODAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 85-92, cooler South Coast. Moderately humid – dew point lower 60s. Wind W 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy to mostly clear. A few fog patches inland lower elevations. Lows 60-67. Moderate humidity – dew point near 60. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 87-94, cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Slightly humid – dew point near 60. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog mostly interior lower elevations. Lows 65-72. Moderately humid – dew point lower to middle 60s. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 89-96, cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Moderately humid – dew point lower to middle 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 66-73. More humid – dew point lower to middle 60s. Wind SW to W under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible. Highs 88-95, cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Humid – dew point middle to upper 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 68-75. Very humid – dew point upper 60s to near 70. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs 85-92, cooler Cape Cod. Very humid – dew point near 70. Wind W 5-15 MPH, possibly gusty.

DAYS 7-10 (JUNE 10-14)

Upper high pressure shifts westward, high pressure at the surface builds down from Canada bringing cooler/dry weather June 10-11. Attempted return of warmer and more humid air from the south sets up the potential for some episodic unsettled weather in the June 12-14 period.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 15-19)

Expecting a mostly zonal (west to east) flow pattern with variable temperatures and a couple shower threats from passing disturbances, but dry weather most of the time.

  1. It is interesting how well the sun burns off the muggy. Same temp this am …..so far…as last two days. DP 64 vs 66. But feel of air is much less thick.

    1. This is where RH (relative humidity) comes into play. Much of the time it hardly means a thing, but in this case you will notice it. Example: Dew point in lower 60s with air temp in middle 60s feels more humid than dew point in lower 60s with air temp in upper 70s or 80s. That subtle change in the actual dewpoint in your case will make a bit of difference as well.

I suspected we’d get a tiny bit of slightly drier air in behind that trough that went by yesterday.

  2. Logan is up to 82 and rising quite rapidly. 90 not out of the question at all with SW at 12 mph likely to keep out the sea breeze. We shall see.

fwiw, Logan dp down to 61 which certainly helps.

79 here in JP after starting out at 60.

  3. Logan high temp last Saturday, May 29th: 51F

Logan current temp one week later at 10am: 81F

(I know it says 83F, but 81F seems more in line with everything else around it)

+30F differential, at 10am no less. +40F differential by days end?

What could tomorrow´s difference be ? It was 51F again last Sunday.

    1. It’s very likely that the real high temps last Saturday & Sunday at Logan were 49.

  4. Looking to the weeks ahead, I am really interested to watch the high temps in the northern Plains, when there is ridging in the central US.

Somewhat eye-catching to see the high temps in the Dakotas and Minnesota yesterday.

Further east, Great Lakes region also reporting low to moderate drought.

With the right jet stream set-up in the coming weeks and if there are no big rains from the northern Plains into the Great Lakes, there is plenty dry ground there to cook up some really high temps with lower than average dewpoints.

I think the potential is there to deliver our region a one day, absolute scorcher.

    1. I was thinking the same thing last night when I saw
106 in Bismark ND and 98 in Sioux Falls, SD.

  5. Best I can tell….

Boston’s thermo is 2 degrees too high.
Beverly’s thermo is 2 degrees too high and their DP is too high.
Manchester NH’s thermo is also around 2 degrees too high.
This seems to be a common malfunction with these sensors…
Lawrence doesn’t look as off to me as it had before but I’ll keep an eye on that one.

The other day when Beverly went missing for a little while I thought maybe they were fixing it, but apparently not.

      1. Right now both Norwood and Logan are reading 88.
Bedford is 86 and probably correct. Then wouldn’t that
make Norwood and Logan off by 2 degrees?

        1. Norwood has always been a cold spot in the morning and a hot spot during the day. I think it’s location.

  6. My oldest granddaughter and I had a conversation the other day about literal vs abstract thinking. I’m literal when it comes to data. She is also.

May I make a suggestion. Serious, not critical. Thinking a temperature is incorrect based on other areas is a guess. I’ve said a million times that my house is consistently two degrees cooler than Sutton center a few miles away. It is confirmed by various thermometers. Yea, I can be pathetically anal.

Maybe get at least two….better three….perfect.y calibrated thermometers of different types and check the areas. We do want accuracy, and it seems that is the only way to get it.

Fun summer project for a young weather enthusiast also

  7. Thanks TK.

My Acurite is reading 87F with a dewpoint of 67F and a heat index of 91F. The dewpoint seems a bit high although we did have a ton of surface moisture and fog last night and this morning from the storms last night.

I had 1.13″ in the rain gauge from the storms last night bringing me to a total of 8.20″ since May 1st. There were heavier amounts just to my south with Marlborough CT reporting 3″ of rain in just one hour!

  8. JJ – I am heading out to your neck of the woods shortly. My daughter’s softball tournament is in Watertown this weekend. 3 games this afternoon and tomorrow’s schedule will depend on how they do today. Going to be a steamy one!

  9. On central Cape Cod.

It’s 75-80F on Rte 6, but we’ve gotten off and gone to south side for lunch and grey, low clouds cover the southern third of the sky and its 70F. Comfortable temp, some people here but not crowded.

Probably try to find some mini golf after lunch 🙂

    1. My family here headed to holliston for coffee around 9:00 and have yet to resurface. I’ll be surprised if they are not in your neck of the woods

  10. With Logan’s thermometer “off” once again, I suspect there will be additional 90 or 91 recordings which should have been 88-89s. Oh well. 😉

    1. Yes, there will be. And it’s completely wrong if they leave them, knowing the data is incorrect. There’s absolutely NO EXCUSE for leaving data incorrect if it’s known to be so.

  11. Mark good luck to your daughters team. Where in Watertown is the softball tournament? Good luck to your Islanders tonight and hopefully one of these days the Yankees will get out of this offensive slump

    1. Thanks JJ. Islanders need this one tonight!

Bombers are up 18-0 in the first game. It’s a bludgeoning. I feel bad for the other team.

We are at Veterans Park on Nova Scotia Hill Rd. Bring me a freeze pop please. It’s hot out here 🙂

  12. That is a nice park. I ran a couple NVL cross country meets there when I was in high school.

    1. It is nice, and there’s lots of big trees surrounding the fields. It really is not that bad out here with all the shade and there is a nice breeze today.

  13. Logan continues to be off. The other thing that sticks out like a sore thumb today is Beverly’s dewpoint. 60-64 everywhere. 68 at BVY (3PM obs). Nope, don’t think so. 😉

    1. Logan 90 while at least 1/2 dozen surrounding reporting stations also reporting 90. I am conflicted.

      1. Maybe the sensor is correct, but it reads higher if/when jet exhaust gets too close to it.

        1. I don’t think it’s correct. It doesn’t just be okay after they fix it and then just suddenly become two degrees too high by jet exhaust.

It is messed up. It is definitely not 91 there right now at 5:00 p.m..

Not with all the stations surrounding it being about 2° lower. Not with a Southwest wind when Bradley and Hartford are 91° and 92°. I am 100% convinced that the sensor is messed up.

          1. Logan is 90 and all the stations around it are 90 now.

I just don’t get this at all.

As I said, I am conflicted.

  14. Bumped into low 90s for a very short period. DP is 64. Is now 87. Swordfish on the barbie tonight. Yum

  15. Wow. What a game tonight! This is a heck of a series. Old time hockey at its best! No surprise this is going 6 or 7 games.

  16. 66 to 72 across all of MA at 7 a.m. and Logan is reading 77?

I DON’T THINK SO. Sorry, but that’s a BAD sensor. I need no further evidence and I rest my case. I was correct on this before. I am correct on this now.

You may have had a ghost of a chance of convincing me that 77 was right if the sensor was in Government Center. But on an flat piece of land surrounded by water on 3 sides? Nope. Ain’t happening.

It’s time for them to go back out there and fix it. End of story.
