  1. Excellent article on the differences in policy between the U.S. and Europe (including Britain): https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/05/world/europe/us-covid-vaccines.html?

I was struck by this quote from a director of a medical research center in the UK: “The U.S. strategy perhaps reflects a more deep-rooted commitment to individualism. The U.K.’s vaccination campaign is highly managed and mirrors more a sense of being our brother’s keeper.”

    1. Phew. That is a powerful quote. I’m very sad for US. But it didn’t start that way. Much like what we saw after September 11, people stood outside and cheered nightly. Others put teddy bears in windows that parents could take their children on a car ride to hunt for.

Then something as simple as a face mask became a dividing line. I don’t know what happened, but can guess.

      E pluribus unum

      1. Just last night on the evening news, the vast majority of disturbances on flights now are all about masks. It used to be about seat belts, getting up to use restroom, etc.

As someone who uses public transportation (MBTA and taxi), I would like to see some relaxation for fully vaccinated people though.

Having said that, I wouldn’t want to be on a fully packed flight without a mask for 2+ hours either.

    1. Would have liked to have seen the US much higher than #7. Better than near the bottom, certainly.

        1. I think that Canada has caught up to many nations in the past 6 weeks with a blitz campaign of vaccinations. The Our World in Data graph didn’t include Canada and a number of other countries. It should have.

By the way, the U.S. has still done comparatively well, especially early on, so, several months ago. Vaccinations (particularly 1st doses) among adults have slowed to a trickle. Most of the 1st dose vaccinations are now in the 12-15 age group.

India may have had as many as 2 million coronavirus deaths already, according to excess mortality data.

  2. Vicki, I agree with you.

The article I sent includes a number of quotes from people who are afraid that Covid-19 will become a disease of the developing world – this is clearly already happening – and in the developed world, a disease of the underprivileged blacks, browns, and whites. It then becomes an out of sight and out of mind thing, especially in a country like the U.S. that has a limited safety net and no universal health coverage for underprivileged folks and others.
