  1. TK, thanks for the update. I appreciate all the work you do on this blog! Seriously!!

Currently 7 in Newton and that’s without the wind chill. This morning, Joe Joyce put up a high of 19 for Boston today. Mt Washington right now = -15.

    1. Thanks Longshot! Although not much work was involved in this update. Just a copy/paste and a minor edit. After last night I wasn’t ready to re-analyize it all, at least since we are dealing with just some quiet cold today.

The only thing I finally had to do was give up on my isolated snow showers. The Euro carried that disturbance for days – thought for sure we’d have something. Now the best we’ll get is some fractocumulus clouds with glaciated edges and snow virga, if even that. πŸ™‚

  2. It looks like back to warmth for next weekend and the rest of the month and I do believe that we will begin cold & snowy mid-February through the rest of winter.

    1. On Brett Anderson’s blog the other day the week of Febrauary 6th it had coastal storms with a question mark for the
      Northeast. Will see what happens.
No big storms this week. Any snow Monday night into Tuesday for the interior will be MINOR. Next weekend temps back
      in the 40s.

  3. A great day after a great win!! Go Patriots!! It’s still early but we could see a repeat of the superbowl teams 16 yrs ago, patriots have been very good for a very long time, unbelievable what Kraft has brung us in the 20 yrs of owning them πŸ™‚

  4. On that warmth for the rest of the month commencing next weekend…..maybe not…..hint of a high passing north of the Great Lakes and into southern Quebec from the 25th on that would temper some of the possible warmth.

    1. Interesting…..dont know…..but, the difference in the temp btwn the air a few thousand feet above the ocean and the ocean water temp is very, very large and thus, it is quite unstable out there, so maybe there is something spinning out there. It could also be the snow your seeing falling from the clouds that makes it look like a water spout.

      1. I was seeing what looked like the tail (don’t know proper term ) coming down from the clouds earlier. It’s those that we are seeing in some cases extend all the way to the water and move along author what appears to be spin with the cloud. It’s fascinating whatever it is

    2. I don’t usually point out typos, unless they make me laugh out loud. I think “eater spouts” sound like they belong in a Stephen King book/movie. πŸ™‚

      1. Haha. I’m using my iPhone and I had just woken up. Eyes at half mast. I had to go back to see what I typed. Then laughed all I can think of is man eating Brussel sprouts

  5. If you want to see a tiny bit of snow locally…..you need to look closely and squint a bit…:)

click SKAKET BEACH CAM…………from that search, click TOWN of ORLEANS, MA – Nauset Beach Cam

You’ll get 2 pictures..The top one is from the ocean side, the bottom one is from the bayside.

      1. Me too……when I was growing up, my folks had a summer cottage in the area……now, its about an hour’s drive for me and I enjoy taking my kids, particularly for low tide when the beach seems endless.

  6. I posted awhile ago on the blog from yesterday by mistake. Can I copy and paste it to here or should I just leave it alone?

    1. Feel free to move it here. There are no restrictions on copying a misplaced post (unless it disagrees with my forecast – just kidding!) . πŸ™‚

  7. Last night my sister and her husband came over and watched the game with us. What a game! My brother-in-law gets really excited and at times cheered so loud our cat ran under the sofa! Clearly, I believe they are going to not only go to the Super Bowl but win it, as well. They played a superb game last night – as they have all season. They are truly champions.

Haven’t been out yet but it is β€œcold” out. Or should I say β€œvery cool” – re: NWS definition of the weather?

      1. Vicki – thanks for your comment on the earlier blog. Guess I am so excited about the Pats I got a little confused! πŸ™‚

And the temp. has jumped up to 5 degrees. Getting warmer out! πŸ™‚

  8. So I guess the pats had a very good game. We were at a rocking surprise 5oth at the Phillips candy house Dorchesrer. I kept going to the bar and saw bits and pieces. I felt a blowout was possible. We came home to know heat, but I fixed It. Sanfrancisco is for real. I caught the end of that game at the bar. Although I was mad at going out lastnight, my wife had a blast seeing friends she grewup with, and being back in the old
neighborhood. Very cold day on tap.

  9. Fantastic weather today. I ran this morning from 7am to 8am. Awesome! Of course I’m very disappointed with the winter thus far, but I’ll take a weekend like this. They can’t take this away from us. And, there’s a glimmer of hope as Tom alluded to. My take on the models this morning is that the advertised warm-up (still at least 5 days away) will not be quite as warm as predicted. In fact, I see some signs of more significant snows for ski country next week (still much-needed) if the High that Tom alluded to dances over Quebec to at least lock in some relatively cold air. In the Boston area I think we’ll mainly be dealing with rain as the `cold’ air to our north will be muted.

  10. By the way, Seattle of all places may have a major snowstorm on its hands in the coming days, according to Ken Clark of accuweather. That’s a rare occurrence in temperate Seattle, but the ingredients are in place.

  11. A good friend of mine lives in Seattle. She used to be my neighbor, but moved out there several years ago. She said she misses the snow. And this year it might be just working out in her favor.

  12. I was just in an unintentional wind chill laboratory. I drove my parents’ car down to a local McD’s to get them coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Since they don’t use the car all that much anymore, I wanted to put some gas in it and give it a run so it wasn’t sitting in the cold unused for too long. Well, the power window went down, but decided it’s staying that way. Good thing the drive back home was only about a mile. πŸ™‚

And yes this has happened before. The window will go up eventually.

    1. I’ll have to check. Suspect not much, except for a bit on the backside
We’ll see, Check in a little bit.

  13. Just read Henry Marguisty comments UGH. Euro climate models show warmth right through March and NAO UGH.

    1. JJ-Hope your enjoying the weekend and feeling good after the big win. Two good games on today as well. So far all home teams winning in post season. JJ, although I asked you this question yesterday on precip type for early Tuesday, and you had thought rain for Boston area and coast, do you still feel that way. I am just thinking with all this cold air in place since Friday. Hope you get an extended day off tomorrow, I am off and so excited. Have a great day JJ and thank you.

  14. Hey John…. A good day to stay in and watch some football considering how chilly it is. As I said earlier I think this will be the coldest day of the month. I still feel the same way about the Monday night Tuesday event. Not a big storm system rain for the coast and a little wintry mix for the interior. Of course it only takes a little to cause problems on the roads. The storm system will go to the west which is not good if you want snow since that will drag a warm front through.
I might have to start rooting for The Farmers’ Almanac to be right about some their snow predictions for February including a big one with 12 plus inches. Next winter according to them starts with a bang and if for some miracle they are right a good chance we get a White Christmas.

    1. Thank’s JJ- Enjoy the games. Lets hope bruins can get a new streak going tomorrow night. Who was in net last night, saw none of it.

  15. Hello 12 z GFS….

    http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/appcontroller?page=Image&prevPage=Param&image=..%2FGemPakTier%2FMagGemPakImages%2Fgfs%2F20120115%2F12%2Fgfs_namer_360_850_temp_mslp_precip.gif&fcast=360&imagesurls=&model=GFS&area=NAMER&storm=&areaDesc=North+America+-+US+Canada+and+northern+Mexico&cat=MODEL+GUIDANCE&rname=SFC-LAYER+PARMS&pname=850_temp_mslp_precip&cycle=01%2F15%2F2012+12UTC&imageSize=M&currKey=model&scrollx=12&scrolly=0&prevArea=NAMER&prevImage=yes

    1. Don’t worry. The GFS will make sure it doesn’t repeat the same run twice. That will be gone next run.

  16. I have to laugh looking at that model run and the date because that is the date the Old Farmers’ Almanac is calling for a blizzard for us.

      1. Knock off the Christian bashing. I know it is the “in” thing to do but please it is offensive to some people

        1. Sorry,

It was NOT meant to be Christian bashing. I sincerely
apologize to any that I may have offended.

          1. Old salty I have never known you to be anything other than kind and considerate. I have very deep personal religious beliefs and thought it was funny

        2. Mr. Benson, its obvious you do not know our friend Old Salty because if you did you would know that he is one of the kindest, most helpful and caring person on this blog.

          Lighten up!

OS, no offense taking from me. I like Vicki thought it was funny and have deep religious beliefs as well as my family. I have a Uncle and Cousin who have there own parish’s and up state New York and I know they would have got a kick out of it. Keep up the great work you do here on this blog.

  17. Tom don’t know if you are here. We think what appears as huge waves on the horizon that I mentioned to you on here the other day is fata morgana. It completely distorts any ship and at the moment we can see Provincetown light so distorted that it looks huge.

  18. Rough ride up to burlington vt Friday afternoon. Snow came in heavy around 4 cars off the road all over. About 3 or 4 inches fell then temps plunged. Near zero most of the weekend. Good to see the white stuff! Cool watching the fog swirl off of lake champlain.
Not much success with the hockey tournament but a lot of fun.

  19. I have been browsing online greater than 3 hours today, yet I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It’s lovely price sufficient for me. In my view, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content material as you did, the internet will likely be much more useful than ever before.
