  1. Thanks TK!

The city of Salem as of midnight this morning has lifted its indoor mask order. Lucky stiffs.

No mention of vaccination status either and no plans to rescind it anytime soon.

        1. And teachers….pushed post too quickly. Some teachers in this area opted to teach remote zooms last spring. They had folks at home at risk or were at risk themselves

  2. Softball questions. It’s almost as if Brennan and Gottlieb are best friends. And, here’s Gottlieb not holding himself accountable for previous statements and predictions, and continuing to promise “light at the end of the tunnel.” He does say we should remain “vigilant,” but provides no details. Then puts out self-serving statements on vaccines and pills which the company he’s a key board member of (Pfizer), makes! https://twitter.com/FaceTheNation/status/1459914018357923842

American media has always baffled me. There are some good reporters, to be sure, and good anchors and news personalities, too. But, man, there’s a LOT of crap, too. And we seem to tolerate mediocrity or worse. And we just don’t have enough American reporters who to resort to tough questioning. For an example of how it ought to be done, see Amanpour interviewing Boris Johnson about not wearing a mask, while sitting next to Sir David Attenborough at the climate conference. https://twitter.com/jonlis1/status/1455620222149406724

From the Bartiromos of the world, who ingratiate themselves with the folks they’ve hand-picked to interview, to multi-million dollar anchors and commenters who blatantly lie or are perverted, then get all-American redemption by returning to the same network they worked for before (eg, Brian Williams. Jeffrey Toobin; who knows, maybe Matt Lauer is next). It’s a long laundry list of sub-par leading figures in the media. You’d think we could do better.

  3. I can’t access NYT. This is a blurb. I’ll see if I can find a source I can open

“Austria has announced a targeted lockdown for unvaccinated adults and minors over age 11 amid a surge of Covid-19 infections in the country. It is believed to be one of the first national lockdowns directed at the unvaccinated.”

      1. It’s highly controversial. You may recall Philip asking whether in the Netherlands the unvaccinated can go outside once their new rules for the unvaccinated go into effect on the 1st of December, and I answered, yes. Well, in Austria, the answer is no, for all intents and purposes. it’s a very strict lockdown for the unvaccinated. Effectively it’s a stay-at-home order. They can’t go to work. The only thing they can do is shop for essentials. But, with the green pass system they will be checked on by the authorities.

I think this goes waaaaay too far. It plays into the hands of the MTGs, Gohmerts, and Cruzes of the world. They have been warning that the U.S. was/is headed in the direction of discriminating wholesale against the unvaccinated. Well, it’s not happening here much at all. But it most definitely is in Austria, with a very heavy-handed approach that marginalizes the unvaccinated. We do live in a democracy. I do not favor such an approach. Employer mandates, fine. Green pass systems, with proofs of negative tests as ways to enter places, fine. But not the Austrian approach.

  4. Doing some county by county analysis, the news isn’t good at all, and this includes several dozen counties in New England, and dozens more across the Northeast and Midwest. Haven’t even done the analyses for states like Colorado and New Mexico, where everything is a mess. I fear a major spike is coming this week. We already had gradual increases in the past 2 weeks. Gottlieb and others are saying “post Thanksgiving surge.” Huh? Are they actually analyzing the data? Surge is here now and will likely accelerate long before Thanksgiving. We’re in for a rough ride.

Meanwhile, the UK cases continue to rise: 5th straight day. I always wonder when this happens why we don’t hear from Topol and others. They casually stated 2 weeks ago that the UK was on a downward slope and that this would continue. Now, you don’t hear from them on the UK. Aggravating.

  5. Something about the German language that makes it sound concise and resolute. Vaccine mandate is “Impfpflicht” in German. It explains why, when I got mad at my children, I almost always reprimanded them in Dutch, which sounds a lot like German. Commands are also similarly succinct. And nowadays I tell my cat off in Dutch.

  6. There is a NYT opinion article on the approach by the Danish for those who can access it. This was what I could see

“ In The New York Times Opinion Section

In Denmark, “high trust and a sense of community have made Covid policy easier,” write three Danish researchers in a guest essay. “When vaccines were approved, Danes quickly got vaccinated.”
