  1. Vicki, you and I agree that we can always learn a lot from opposing viewpoints.

I am struck by the polarization on everything from Covid-19 to Medicare drug pricing. People tend to dig in; almost like trench warfare to defend their positions. Nuance is kind of lost in the process.

Someone I respect – a biotech investor – wrote “a very sad day for patients” referring to the Inflation Reduction Act’s drug pricing provisions. Seriously. A “very sad day” for older folks on fixed and often low incomes who can now better afford their medicines? Lower out-of-pocket costs for seniors and disabled folks will save lives. People won’t forgo treatments as much. They’ll adhere to medication regimens more.

I am all for a real debate on the legislation that just passed. But, statements like the one I refer to above are not contributing to a sane discussion. Sure, I recognize that the bill will hit biotech’s profits a little. And yes, out of 1,300 new drugs in the next 10 years there may be 10 to 15 fewer drugs – not necessarily good ones, by the way – developed. Does this translate into a “very sad day for patients?” No. And no sane person would say that, except the person who did is very sane. It’s infuriating.

    1. IMO the party I grew up very proud to be part of has, for the majority, disintegrated.

The folks I enjoy discussions with are pretty much all that remains of the true GOP. The ultra right calls them RINOs when in truth they are the only true republicans remaining.

I’m a bit intrigued by this new FREEDOM party but have not done a lot of reading about it.

  2. I try to be a “glass half full” person, rather than “glass half empty.” So, with guarded optimism I present you with the latest Covid sub-variant news. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1557003843900420097

Good news is BA.2.75 isn’t picking up steam. Somewhat concerning, however, is the strength of BA.4.6. It’s similar to BA.2.75 in terms of properties. Keep an eye on this one. Let’s hope it does not take off.
