Friday March 1 2024 Forecast (6:34AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 1-5)

March opens up with a pleasant day as high pressure slips to our south. Gone are the harsh winds of yesterday, and while today will be breezy at times, it’ll be noticeably milder with plenty of sun, making it feel nice. The first weekend of the new month doesn’t hold as much niceness for us, but it won’t be all that bad either. Any sunshine we see this weekend will be generally limited to early Saturday and possibly Sunday midday and afternoon, though the Sunday sun chances are somewhat lower. We’ll also have to deal with a bout of wet weather at mid weekend, Saturday afternoon and evening, as a weak low pressure area drifts up via the Mid Atlantic, and passes just to our southeast. If we don’t get enough dry air pulled in behind this system on Sunday, the clouds will be stubborn to break and the sun chances will go by the boards. Early next week, another small and fairly weak low will hang around just to our south, but close enough to have influence on our region with lots of clouds the story again. I don’t think we’ll see much in the way of any precipitation early next week.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 38-45. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear evening. Clouds increase overnight. Lows 30-37. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partial sunshine early, then cloudy. Periods of rain in the afternoon. Highs 45-52. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Periods of rain evening. Areas of fog develop. Lows 38-45. Wind SE to variable under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Any fog thins out but clouds linger, and may break for sun at times in the afternoon. Highs 45-52. Wind variable to NW up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 38-45. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 38-45. Highs 48-55, coolest at the coast. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 6-10)

Mild with rain chances March 6-7. Dry, somewhat colder weather March 8. Watching potential storm for the March 9-10 weekend which includes the chance of some frozen precipitation.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 11-15)

Drier weather favored early to mid period. Unsettled weather returns later in the period. Temperatures near to above normal.

  1. https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G18&sector=np&band=Sandwich&length=24

This particular set-up continues to fascinate me.

Can see at the base (bottom) of the trof, the jet max that is going perpendicularly straight into the northern and central Sierra.

Certainly not a traditional pineapple express atmospheric river, but in a way, I would argue this is another atmospheric river, that is transversing much cooler waters.

However, it is a very long fetch over ocean that is coming in perpendicular to California and I would suggest makes it qualify as one.

    1. That imagery really does show it well. Such a long fetch of moisture to tap into and the Tahoe area is right in the crosshairs.

    1. Congrats HADI!!! Well Deserved. Hope it all works out well for you!

My equipment is Davis Instruments Vantage Vue 6250.
The thermometer sensor has been extremely accurate.

What is your equipment? Curious. Don’t understand the difference in such a short distance. There was “some” wind last night, so it wasn’t totally raditationally cooling or was it?

  2. Thanks TK.

Definitely intrigued by the winter storm signal the models have been picking up on for the 3/9-10 period and then the pattern in general for the second half of March. Looks more supportive for late season snow opportunities when the trough in the West finally lifts.

  3. Thank you TK!

Happy Friday, at least I hope it will be. Praying my husband gets discharged from the hospital today. Went in on Wednesday evening with chest pains and we are now waiting for the results of his stress test. Depending on those results he will either be going to the cath lab today or coming home with a heart monitor. Always something.

    1. Praying for him today sue! Hope all he needs is a heart monitor – I’m no stranger to the short term holter monitors and the longer month long monitors which made my chest itch. lol. They’re really good with all that technology. They’ll make sure he’s right as rain.

    2. Hope he gets out soon Sue. Very fortunate he caught this early. With some people there is no warning at all.

    3. Sue, I am so sorry to hear your news. Prayers rising for your husband, you and your family ❤️

  4. Sue, hoping that your husband is feeling better.

Hadi, congratulations on landing the new job.

  5. Thank you all! Stress test looked good so that’s a huge relief. He will wear a heart monitor for two weeks and we will see where we go from there. I appreciate all of the positive thoughts and prayers!

    1. Glad to hear the stress test went well for your Husband Sue and they will be doing more testing with the monitor, prayers coming your way .

  6. Now that were in March you start to think will this be the last shot at accumulating snow for the season? I know there are signals there for a storm in that time frame but I don’t buy what the 12z GFS is showing for next weekend.

  7. Thanks, TK.

I’m rooting for any accumulation to favor Fri. – Sat. next weekend; I need to be able to travel on Sunday…

    Congratulations, Hadi!

    Great news, Sue!

  8. 11” at the base and 17” on the upper mountain so far as of early this morning at Palisades Tahoe. Additional snow accumulations of 4-6 feet at the base and 6-8 feet on the mountain expected by Monday AM per this mornings blog update:

    https://blog.palisadestahoe.com/weather/17-counting-the-storm-ramps-up/

Needless to say the mountain is closed today and may continue to be right through the weekend.

No rest for the weary either with another storm coming in hot on this one’s heels for Mon/Tues with another 8-15” expected.

  9. I will believe it when I see it. I KNOW it can happen.
But, honestly, we’re into March now. I’d be just as happy
if it didn’t snow until next Winter. I doubt I’ll get my wish. 🙂

Looking forward to fishing, NOT shoveling SNOW!

    1. With our luck we’ll have a powder blizzard in April like we did in April 1982. I wasn’t here (was in the Netherlands) but my father told me at the time that it was a very impressive cold storm.

And, as I keep saying every year, I’m still waiting for some measurable snow in June. It’s going to happen one of these years though probably not in my remaining lifetime

Speaking of lifetime … I just read Biden’s 6 page health report. Except for his stiff gait, his numbers are significantly better than mine across the board, from pulse to blood pressure to cholesterol to other tests they did as well as not having physical ailments). I work out every day and never eat ice cream. I often feel like crap.

I’m not saying I don’t believe the report, but clearly I wasn’t blessed with Biden’s health, nor Trump’s, for that matter. I think they’ll both live until they’re 100. Meanwhile I’ll keel over at 70.

  10. JP here is the weather device I use. It’s about 10 feet off the ground pole mounted.

Ambient Weather WS-2902C WiFi Smart Weather Station

    1. Jr recommended kestrel handheld and ambient for my yard. Although we are often 2 degrees off from areas a few miles away. But sutton has varying elevations. It’s why I always post SE Sutton

    2. That looks like a really cool weather station, but I am surprised at the temperature sensor accuracy.

Ambient Weather WS-2902 Smart Wifi …
      Ambient Weather
      https://ambientweather.com › ws-2902-smart-weather-sta…
      Humidity Accuracy: ± 5%. Humidity Resolution: 1 %. Outdoor. Temperature Sensor Range: -40 to 149 °F. Temperature Accuracy: ± 2 °F. Temperature

      Davis Instruments

      The temperature sensor’s accuracy and range is ±0.5°F (±0,3°C) from -40° to 150°F (-40° to 65°C)
The humidity sensor’s accuracy is ±2%.

I believe that likely explains our difference in temperature. 🙂

  11. Thanks, TK!

Only a handful of students fell for my “Hoy es el 30 de febrero” gag this morning. Of course, it didn’t help that I added a 30 to my changeable classroom calendar for Febrero!

A very “lamb-like” day for March 1 with a morning minimum of 20!

Sue, great news about your husband!!! Continued prayers for him, you and your family.

    Super weekend, y’all! 🙂

    1. Love it! Good one Capt!!
Had I been in your class, I assure you that I would have called you out on that one. 🙂

  12. I’d love to see a huge storm here. I figure we have two months. In the meantime and if nothing materializes, it is fun to keep following the possibles and seeing everyone’s links to happenings elsewhere. Thank you.

  13. Sue, hope everything is ok with your husband. Sending positive thoughts.

Hadi, congrats on the new job! Will make your vacation so much better without that stress.

SSK, hope your wife’s recovery is going well.

    TK, how is your Mom?

    1. Big time on the trip. I can actually enjoy myself. But it’s been a long 9 months. Again 1st world problems I know. 🙂

      Thanks everyone for the support.
