Tuesday Forecast

7:30AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 12-16)…
Cold front slogs through the region west to east today, producing a ribbon of rainfall for part of the day, though clearing approaching from the west after the front passes may allow the sun to shine before it sets, especially the further west you are. High pressure builds in but centers itself north of the region Wednesday through Saturday. An offshore storm system may get close enough by Saturday for some cloudiness in the region though expecting it to remain dry at this time.
TODAY: Cloudy through mid afternoon including a period of rain west to east. Slow clearing west to east beginning late afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with gusts 25-35 MPH common and isolated gusts above 35 MPH mainly this morning, diminishing gradually and shifting to W during the afternoon.
TONIGHT: Complete clearing. Lows in the 30s. Wind W shifting to NW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 40s to middle 50s, coolest coast. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the upper 40s to middle 50s, coolest at the coast.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the upper 40s to middle 50s, coolest at the coast.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the upper 40s to middle 50s, coolest at the coast.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 17-21)…
High pressure slips to the south by April 17 and any low pressure that was offshore is far enough away to allow a more westerly flow with fair and warmer weather. Front may slip down from the north turning the wind north to east again April 18, which is Patriots Day and the Boston Marthon. Exepecting dry weather at this time for that day. Continued mainly dry with fairly seasonable temperatures April 19-21.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 22-26)…
Starting out fair then turning unsettled with rain chances increasing by the middle of the period. Fair weather should return later in the period. Temperatures near to below normal.

  1. Thanks TK !

Beautifully warm start to the day.

This has to be one of the windiest early Springs I can remember on the south shore. Not that any day stands out. But, multiple wind events, very strong gusts again yesterday.

  2. It seems as if wind is a huge part of our forecast and has been for perhaps the past year. Tom, if it is windy here, I cannot imagine what it is like there. Of late, it sure seems to be more focused in your area.

  3. Good morning and thank you TK.

Starting out this morning at 60 Degrees. We can take that.
    Nice grass growing weather.

Dr. Cohen’s blog is out and he says continued cool through the end of the month.
    Hope he is dead wrong.

He expects AO and NAO to remain negative the rest of the month.

      1. perhaps TK would know for sure. I strongly suspect that
it is doctored. But sometimes just when I think that, it is not.
        So we shall see.

…threat of gusty southwest winds into mid day…

southwest winds increase this morning ahead of a cold front with
accompanying moderate rain showers. frequent gusts 25 to 35 mph
along with the possibility of isolated gusts of 40 to 45 mph into
    are possible until midday.

wind gusts may be strong enough to down small branches perhaps
resulting in an isolated power outage.

  5. Is it going to rain hard enough to to washin fertilizer? I applied it on Sunday and thought it was going to rain hard enough to wash in for my daughters birthday party this weekend. I’m a bit worried.

    1. That is the main reason I detest treating lawns. It is also the reason I have gotten rid of all lawn services we have ever had. Even with organic, I want everything watered in before the kids get near the lawn. We never seem to be able to time it because Mother Nature has different ideas. And lawn service companies we have had cannot seem to grasp the concept that I want to know well in advance and it works around our schedule. Not to mention companies are at same Mother Nature disadvantage as the home owner.

Charlie….I want to be sure to specify that I am only discussing companies we have worked with since we have had kids and in no way am implying that you would be the same.

    2. I did the same and am worried it won’t be enough rain. I’ve been reading at least .25-.50″ but i think we’ll fall short. It also needs to be steady enough to soak but not too heavy to wash it away.

    1. Never having had one (except a Vicki sprinkler system), I’ll have to figure how to start it up. Perhaps with a son in law who is a plumber and one who manages a plumbing company, I’ll find some help 😉

  6. Thank you, TK.

I’m hoping for reasonable weather later this week. I’m taking a wait-and-see approach. It’s unpleasant currently, in terms of cloudiness, frequent rain, and persistent wind.

Have deep concerns about the Sox. Not about the manager. Not about Ortiz. Not even Hanley (good athlete who could excel at 1st and may produce at the plate) or Pablo (the perfect bench warmer). It’s the pitching from top to bottom. Price is good, but not great, and he’s mediocre in `big’ games (post-season). I would include Opening Day at home as a big game even though it has very little impact on the rest of the year. Kimbrel is a national league closer. Remember Melancon. Great with Pittsburgh before and after his dismal showing with the Sox. The story of Melancon (and there are many like him who cannot make the transition to the AL) should give everyone pause about how good Kimbrel will be in a vastly superior league. AL hitters are more selective, hit fastballs much better, and there are very few gaps in lineups like in the NL. If Price is just a good pitcher, Kimbrel so-so, and the rest of the staff is what we think it is, this could very well be a 75 win season, with many of those wins coming from relatively strong offense. Management has not put together a balanced team. Not Dombrowski’s fault since you can’t change things overnight. But what I’m seeing thus far does not give a true fan like myself much hope.

    1. I do understand your concern.
      Howevah….
I do not think the AL East is vastly superior anymore.
The fact they can hit and that they have good lineup in the field will help the pitchers over the long haul.
I still think the staff has good arms and over time there is hope. (Buchholz, I think, may be lost)
Most importantly, they have won three more Series titles than I ever thought I would see and I just enjoy them.
After ’86 I just stopped sweating whether they won or lost (at least until I was chewing on a towel with Dave Roberts at first base in Game 4 in ’04) 🙂

      1. I hear you. We’re spoiled. 3 championships since 2004. Certainly, the state of the Red Sox does not determine my mood or outlook on life. This said, I love the game and want the Red Sox to be competitive. I love 2 sports – baseball and hockey. I like the other 2 major U.S. sports, but don’t care nearly as much about them. `My’ Bruins bit the dust 2 years in a row. `My’ Red Sox have also been a no-show 2 years running. So, I guess what I’m asking for is some competitiveness out of both teams.

      2. I do like your perspective, MassBay!!! It seems that is the best part of sports….simple enjoyment! Or perhaps life in general 🙂

    2. Joshua…Sandoval is a HUGE concern as well to say the least. Right now he is TOTALLY useless!

    1. Good lord.
As my grandfather used to say
I’d rather be with my back broken in the hottest, darkest corner of hades than to live there. 🙂
Think they sell much Xanax and prosac there?

      1. Sadly, there are serious issues with clinical depression in northern Canada. Suicide is a significant risk, particularly among young people, in many communities. Some of this is likely related to the elements. It’s bleak up there, even to someone like myself who loves winter and the cold (too much of it would get me out of sorts). But, much of it has to do with the lack of economic opportunity and the difficulties for an indigenous people to adapt to a modern culture.

    2. That picture gave me an ahhhh moment. I think Charlie would say just go ahead and fertilize. The stuff will find its way down eventually 😉

  7. re: Sox
Joshua you said exactly what was on my mind about Price. Yesterday was indeed
similar to the post season. Opening Day is a Big Deal in Boston. A Big Deal and he
could NOT handle it, period, end of discussion. Given that, I think he will do OK
during the season with something like 15-5, 16-4, 14-7 or somewhere in that range wiht an ERA around 3ish. No more 2.45. You can kiss that good-bye.
He will NOT win 20 and IF and that is a huge IF, they get into the playoffs, he
    will SUCK there for sure.

Craig Kimbrel is a different story. I watched him pitch. He will be just fine. So we disagree on that guy.

As far as the rest of the Motely Crew??? Stick a fork in them. You have a mediocre
Price and 4 JAGS! End of Story. SUCKHOLZ is done. Washed up. KAPUT!!!
Sorry, I think there is a bit of salvation in Eduardo Rodriguez. He has the potential
to be SPECIAL, IF he recovers from injury.

Again, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. And NOT for one second am I an
Optimist. Not now, never was and never will be. My glass is always 1/4 empty.

    1. I guess that should say 3/4 empty or 1/4 full. Perhaps I’m not as much a pessimist as I thought? 😀

  8. Oh and the Bruins. I just heard on the radio a gazillion sports columnists and radio personalities all saying to KEEP Julian. I beg to differ. I can’t stand that coach, never like him and never will like him. The sooner he goes, the better off the team will be.

Now, in addition to that, they best clean house of some players not giving the proper effort.

    1. I’m not sure what your dislike is with Julian is . He is one of the best coaches in the NHL. I guarantee if they fire him he has a head coaching job in the NHL within 30 minutes . Now what does that tell you . Cam Neally who I loved as a player sucks big time in his new role , they have got rid of good talent and received crap in return for the most part not all. Letting Claude go will be a huge mistake and the team will be in worse shape trust me on this.

  9. To the comments above. The day the Super Bowl ended is a sad day as there is a 4-5 month lull until it returns. There is just something about going to a football game. It’s a complex sport and hard for many to understand the ins and outs of every single position, nevermind the playbook. I honestly could care less about baseball or hockey. That said I’m not saying people that follow it are any less. I do think baseball hockey and basketball has become more regional and localized as football has blown up across America like no other sport. When I was in London I saw many Brady and patriots jerseys everywhere along with Manchester United jerseys. I think Gisselle has something to do with it. But I do know the Patriots are uk’s favorite sports team. To each there own.

    1. I will say when we go to mt tremblanc canada. I’m always amazed at just how everyone or a high % are Canadiens fans. That place is hockey central.

    2. I think that everyone certainly should enjoy whatever sport he or she chooses. I’d say that far more people realize the ins and outs of football than you give them credit for, however. All sports are complex, Charlie, when done well, as is everything in life. The one thing I am wise enough to understand is that because others like something, it does not influence how I feel about it so it really doesn’t mean much to me who is wearing what sports tee shirts. If that is what makes something more important to you, then that certainly is your right. I’m just not sure why….at the start of a season many enjoy….the talk resorts to football. It seems a tad diminishing.

  10. A very well-behaved weather system, doing just as expected. From my perch on Woods Hill’s southwesterly slope, I can see the clearing line to the west. It’s not a sharp line as it has fragments of other clouds behind it, and at least 2 layers of clouds involved, but we will likely see some sunshine before it drops below the horizon – exception possibly parts of Cape Cod depending on the progress of the clearing.

Also, the GFS will be the winner (sort of) in having the least amount of runs (versus the ECMWF and CMC) showing us on the wet side of a temporarily blocked up pattern. Though it did show that for a time, it was brief in comparison. We will indeed be on the fair weather side, though the cool side (except for about 1 1/2 days when we enter the warm side briefly). The front that drops down from the north later Monday next week, depending on its timing, may result in a pretty dramatic temperature drop, especially near the eastern coastal areas.

    1. Hmmm – I like the perch. I sort of feel as if I have one here. I can see layers of clouds to the west but didn’t realize that was the start of the clearing line. Thanks.

        1. It’s very possible – depends on timing and also how the gradient pre-front looks.

  11. Charlie, I second what Vicki said. Your sport is football, which is great. It’s the most popular sport in America. But, baseball still has plenty of fans, and with a growing Latino population its fan base is not going to disappear. The start of baseball season reminds many of us of the old adage “hope springs eternal.” In part, this is a reference to a season you adore – spring! And, try not to wish time away with statements like “86 days until Patriot training camp,” because, that’ll just mean we’re 3 months closer to a season you dislike – winter!

  12. I can see the clearing, just in time to give Suckholz a chance to Suck tonight of course.
Let’s see what his excuse is tonight. That guy has no drive whatsoever.
    Wasted talent is all.

    1. Don’t you love when the opposing team gets base runners and his pitching comes to a crawl or when he throws over to first base with the base runner standing on the bag ????? 🙂 🙂

    1. Yikes!! Incredible! The woman was amazingly calm considering the damage going on there. Never seen anything like that before and it seemed to last forever.
      Thank you for sharing.

      1. There comes a point that some people reach that they know they are going to be ok, and they can’t stop the damage, so they just literally stay calm thru it all. Better than freaking out if you want my honest opinion, if you can manage it…

Another example of the power of nature and the fact it doesn’t care what we put there.

    2. I honestly think many things are. You asked….. Not everything but many. Also I thought that video was going to be much worse. However is was still awesome stuff. Insurance covers it just like any bad weather here. No different.

      1. Charlie….the idea that I sirance covers it is a joke. Insurance pays and then you pay them back double and triple. Also, for most of us there are things we treasure that Insurance can never replace.

  13. Backdoor time on the 18z GFS for Boston….

    70F at 2PM Sunday
    42F at 2PM Monday

That would be quite a damper on Marathon Day.

    1. On yesterday’s version, it had no 80s in Boston through early July.
Today, it has several 80s in late June .

On yesterday’s version, it had 4 days of rain and showers around July 4.
Today, it has mostly sunny weather on the same 4 days.

Regarding the 45 day forecast previously, Elliot said at the SNE Weather Conference that this is basically “for entertainment only”.
