DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 16-20)…
Upper level low pressure area may back westward toward the region for the weekend of April 16-17 with more cloudiness and possibly a few rain showers. High pressure builds back eastward with fair weather April 18-20. Temperatures near to slightly below normal April 16-17, then moderating.

    1. You mean the rain and sleet. πŸ˜‰
It will be NW of Fenway and patchy at best by afternoon. ⚾

      1. No I mean RAIN. NO SLEET here in the City. πŸ˜€
At least it was nothing but RAIN driving in this morning.

    It’s Opening Day! Go Sox!

    …gusty southwest winds this afternoon…

winds will gust frequently between 35 and 40 mph from the
southwest this afternoon across eastern and southeastern
massachusetts as well as all of rhode island. there is a
possibility of some wind gusts reaching 45 mph, especially across
    exposed terrain.

the wind gusts may be strong enough to down some branches this
    afternoon.

    1. And Ortiz launches one to Center! It’s up in the Wind! It’s going, it’s going!
Holy Crap Batman! It’s OVER the centerfield Wall. Has anyone ever done that before???????!!!!!!! (btw I witnessed Micky Mantle clear that wall!)

      1. I didn’t think Mantle cleared the wall but fell short by several feet. Howver, that is my old old memory. Other than than, I don’t think anyone ever has. Ortiz is a favorite of mine. He lost considerable respect from me when he mouthed off about the red seat, however….for obvious reasons.

        1. I was at the game with my Dad. He was batting right handed and unloaded on a pitch. I was pretty young, don’t remember exact age, somewhere around 8-14ish or so.

Now I do believe it was over the wall not too far to the
right of the flag pole, so it was not over the DEAD center part, but it was that back wall for sure. I just can’t remember how far right of the flag pole it was. It wasn’t
a foot or 2 as it was more like 10-20 feet or in that range somewhere.

I do not recall the ball bouncing off of the wall, but as I say I was young and our seats for that game were
Sky Boxes on the 3rd base side nearer to home plate than not.

  3. I think were done posting links for snowfall until next winter.
Can’t wait to start tracking thunderstorms again and I say again after we had that severe weather back on February 24th of this year. Its been an interesting couple months of 2016 not only with the mild temps but severe weather in February and snowfall in April that is more typical of what falls in March.

      1. We certainly hope so, but remember May of 1977.

But all signs point to things warming up to stay soon, so that
should negate any chances of a repeat of 1977. πŸ˜€

              1. We are. I do love the area and the home will be great once I can unpack. I should have had an unpacking party πŸ™‚

  4. Speaking of homeruns … Harmon Killebrew and Jim Rice both cleared the back wall – over section 34. There was a sizable back wall in Rice’s day, an add-on that was completed in 1976. I believe that back wall has since been removed? Killebrew’s favorite spot was about 15 feet to the right of the flagpole. I was at a game in the early 80s in which Dwight Evans almost cleared the high back wall above section 35. Hit a few feet below the top of the back wall. At a game against Oakland in 1978 I was sitting on the third base line in the grand stand and Jim Rice launched a mammoth homerun that was rising into the night as it cleared the wall and screen. I think that ball is in orbit. A similar homerun was struck by Manny during the playoffs in 2007 – a walkoff homer against K-Rod. Wasn’t as majestic as Rice’s but it was crushed. I’ve also witnessed several of Yaz’s prodigious homers to right-center, 10-15 rows back above the 420 ft. sign in the triangle. Eddie Murray was also known for mashing balls over the 420 ft. sign, as were Mo Vaughn and Boog Powell.

    1. Ahhh, blasts from the past. Not sure I have ever witnessed a ball (Live or on TV) that was hit harder or farther than that shot Mantle hit. I know there have
been several other big boppers capable of prodigious homers, but this Mantle
shot was special and has stayed with me all of these years.

      1. Unfortunately never got to see Mantle. Went to many games from 1969 on through the early 80s. Saw Hank Aaron put one in the net in 1975, when he was playing for the Brewers. Most fearsome opposing hitter was Reggie Jackson. He literally instilled fear in me as a child growing up.

        1. I do not recall ever seeing Mantle hit either…what a thrill. My mom was at game when Williams hit the chair as well as his last at bat. I have a practice ball signed by Ted that was hit out of the field sometime in the 1950s – or could have been 1960. Reggie Jackson was at Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway one winter when we stayed there. He was amazingly cordial and spent lots of time talking to fans which left a lasting impression on me. To me that was the era when baseball was played by the greats who loved the game more than the almightly dollar. Perhaps, I am jaded.

    2. I seem to think Bo Jackson hit a monsterous straightaway center field homerun in Fenway that nearly hit the back wall.

  5. Wind certainly has picked up here. Just went out to rescue our trash barrel. Wunder has it gusting to 21. Blackstone, I’m curious as to how often the instruments are calibrated for Wunder. I think it is absolutely fascinating that you have a station at/on your home. A friend from our old neighborhood has a son in TX who has one at/on his home.

    1. Logan gusting to 27.

But get this, atop Blue Hill, it is gusting to 42 mph. Higher wind
is “just” above the surface. Will it mix down to the ground?

  6. Vicki, what a nice memory of Reggie up at North Conway. And the story of your Mom seeing Williams hit the famous chair. Wow!

Back in the summer of 1979 we hosted a French high school student – Laurent. He came from a tiny town 80 miles south of Paris. Had vaguely heard of baseball, but did not know the game. He liked sports, so I decided to take him to a game. It was the year Fred Lynn had been working out on the latest gym craze at the time – the Nautilus. Laurent and I saw Lynn have a monster day at the park. The next day, Laurent asked if we could go again. I said, sure. So, we took the T into town, each spent $2 to get a bleacher seat, and again saw Lynn demolish several baseballs. Laurent was very disappointed the Sox were going on a road trip after our second game and asked when they were coming back. The Sox came home for a weekend series, and Laurent’s flight back to France was on Monday. He and I went to all 3 games. He collected all kinds of souvenirs. Learned how to catch and throw a baseball in our backyard. He was so into it that he refused to wear the t-shirt the exchange students were supposed to have on when traveling (some EF t-shirt). Instead, he had on a Red Sox shirt when we drove him to Logan in August of 1979. We did not stay in touch, unfortunately. But, I’ve always wondered whether Laurent kept all his souvenirs.

    I love baseball.

    1. Nice story. Love it!
I used to love baseball. Not anymore. I still like it, but am not crazy about
it like I once was. πŸ˜€

      1. Agree baseball has faded dramatically since I was a kid.we at one time followed it a little 20+ year ago. We don’t even follow.

        1. The good part is that because you don’t watch and I don’t watch, it is still a very popular sport – loved by many. I should not have chosen today to say that it is not the sport it once was. Bad timing, jaded I am sure and completely unnecessary on my part. I sincerely apologize.

Follow it or not, the words Red Sox Opening Day will always give me a chill.

    2. Enjoy Josh!! I have story’s but from the 70’s with Steve Nelson. Great memories πŸ™‚

      1. Although not entirely sure what we are thanking Him for at this momen….I always will agree πŸ˜‰

  7. Let us not forget April 28-29, 1987…4.1″ @ Logan!

This month is not over just yet. πŸ˜‰

Frankly imho that May 1977 snow was a once in a hundred year thing…maybe even 200. πŸ˜€

  8. Just heard the Blue Angels fly over. I couldn’t see from my window, but I certainly
    heard them!

  9. We’re done for the winter season as far as snow is concerned.

But, it looks to remain fairly cool for quite some time, with only a few days reaching 60F plus. I’m hoping the Low this week remains stuck a bit more off shore, but we’ll have to see about that. Haven’t seen a Low parked like that in a very long time. Just imagine if there was a cold source to our north and the Low was stationed at the benchmark.

  10. There adding new seats behind stadium foe increase demand on watching patriots practices. Last year they broke the record of 24k. This Year it wouldn’t suprise me if they come close to 30k on a sat practice. Again they needed this

        1. Let me guess, there were more people standing there watching the construction than there are at Fenway Park watching the Sox game today. πŸ™‚

Come on..you know you want to say that. πŸ˜€

    1. Thank God!! I have heard SO many people complaining that there aren’t enough seats at the practice field.

  11. EURO looking better as well through 4/17.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am so ready for some sustained sunshine and temps in the 50s. Not being greedy on the temps, just want something that is around normal with the strong sunshine.

And it looks like maybe that is coming, finally !!!!!!!

    1. Agree.

I don’t mind the coolness as long as there is bright sunshine.
The coolness with clouds and dampness is beyond depressing!!!

  12. Season is early. No-one can predict anything with certainty. But, if David Price’s bad second outing on Opening Day is any indication, we’re in for another very long and painful season. The Sox have poor starting pitching after Price, which I think will limit their ability to make the post-season. But, one would expect more from a $30 million man on Opening Day. So much for the reshuffling of deck chairs (starters) to ensure Price was the Opening Day pitcher.

    1. Nice. Price no good at his Price, eh?
Price’s performance on Opening Day =? Priceless!!!

I sure hope he’s not going to be yet another big signing BUSTORAMA!!!!!

      1. No. It’s a very close game with plenty of offense. Most of their games will be long and high-scoring this season. Very exciting for fans if they come out on top, and of course a bit less-so if they don’t. The Sox currently trail 5-4 in the 4th inning but are about to take the lead I believe…

  13. TK, I do agree that this season will be exciting. It’ll remind me of the late 70s, but with even less starting pitching. I just don’t think the Sox have enough pitching to be a true playoff contender.

    1. I don’t expect huge things from them. I do expect some exciting games though. I don’t watch many of the games. I tend to be more of a highlight watcher, and I do listen to some games on the radio when it suits me to do so. I particularly love late-night West Coast games to end my night.

I’ve always been more of a hockey / Bruins fan, though I love all the Boston teams including the Boston Patriots oops I mean New England Patriots. πŸ˜‰

      1. The only thing I can say is that their line up from a hitting perspective appears to be improved. So they will win their share of higher scoring games. Are they a true playoff contender this year? Not hardly. Put them down for 80-85 wins, but NOT
the 90 or so required to make the playoffs, even with the new format. πŸ˜€

      2. I have just the tricorn helmet when they were called the Boston Patriots. Many folks don’t know there were 3 different logos dating back to 1959 (57yrs ago).

    2. Sox have pitching? I should say NOT!

Let me see, they have Rick Porkcello => LOSER
      Joe Folly => LOSER
      Steven Wrong => LOSER
      Clay Suckholz => LOSER

David Price => ??????? we don’t know what we will get
Eduardo Rodriguez => Assuming he comes back from injury “Should” at the very least be a very serviceable pitcher.

To sum it up, here is what the Sox starting pitching looks like

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n3ZzWKXaU4

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  14. Baltimore is going to be good this year. Good line up.
They’re 5-0. Nobody panic. That said, Sox do need another starter.

    1. Barnes pitching for the Sox. He’s bringing it at 96 mph.
How much movement on it? that is the question.

    2. As I said, a lot of scoring this season, and this game is going to be a good example of that. We’re going to get some double double-digit games a few times.

  15. Tk I have just the tricorn helmet when they were called the Boston Patriots. Many folks don’t know there were 3 different logos dating back to 1959 (57yrs ago).

      1. Hey Charlie, Do you remember Bob Nichols from the Pats
of years ago? My son is friends with his daughter (He passed
several years ago from cancer), who is an absolutely wonderful person.

        1. We have an autographed Mini-Helmet signed by Julian
Edelman. My wife won it at a raffle while attending
          a poker tournament.

        2. I started folling the Patriots in 1985, my grandfather was a rugby player, and loved the Patriots. Season ticket holder. Extremely tough dude!! Extremely!! It’s all history for me from there, here we are 31 yrs later. He never saw a Patriots championship. He would be very happy!!

          1. A long time coworker of mine has been to every home game since 1970 except for one…wedding day. πŸ˜›

  16. I sense some runs coming…

Ooo brief sunny interlude at the park. BONUS! Actually may be more. The warm air is blasting in here and the entire cloud deck is shifting northward moreso than a few hours ago.The wind was the price for the warmer air.

  17. You’re right Dave, it wasn’t tied at 5 for long. Now it’s tied at 6. πŸ˜‰
But let me guess, that won’t last long either. πŸ˜›

    1. O well ya got 160 something more games to change. I’m joking but this is why I have lost interest, each game means very little.

      1. Every game is of equal importance.

If they were to miss out on a playoff spot or get into a playoff spot by the slimmest possible margin, how can anyone point to one game over another and say it was more important? It’s illogical. They are ALL equally important and then the overall results are what matter in the end. And this is true in any sport. Even football. You can’t look at a schedule and decide what games are more important and come up with results before the games have been played.

How many people honestly thought the Celtics were going to go into Golden State’s building and end their zillion game winning streak? Ok probably nobody thought they would, but there is a reason why they still played that game…

  18. Saw this video posted on the American Weather forum and thought some of you would find it interesting.

    https://youtu.be/RK06BGpiaD8

It is a video of Don Kent doing the forecast on WBZ during a holiday season noreaster in 1978. I was only 2 at the time (not to mention growing up in upstate NY) so I never had the privilege of watching him but I am sure some of you have.

I found the track of the storm he was discussing here very interesting – center went right over Worcester so Boston was 40 and rain while Hartford had 7″ of snow. I seem to remember a lot of tracks like that growing up where interior areas would jackpot but we seem to be in a new regime right now where those type of storms are fairly rare.

In any event, with all our model cursing aside, pretty amazing how far we have advanced in the past 40 years!

    1. Awesome Mark.
Thank you for that refreshing trip down memory lane. I met him in 1965. GREAT GUY. He was a pioneer.

      1. Thanks Mark! I remember those days well but not that particular newscast, however. That winter season 1978-79 not a lot of snow for Boston at 27.5″. My very first semester of college btw. πŸ™‚

I suspect many storms that winter tracked to the west as that one did. I would be curious if that was an El NiΓ±o regime.

    1. Excellent, a healthy 79 and sunny 90 days from now. I’ll take it. Thanks accuweather for allowing me to book my July vacation with confidence!

  19. Just morbidly curious TK…Is that cold/snow threat you mentioned earlier via the GFS for the weekend of the 23-24 still there by chance? I will be in attendance at outdoor sports both days.
