The Week Ahead

10:40PM

LET’S DISCUSS…What’s up this week?

High pressure will build off the East Coast early this week, sending hotter, humid conditions into New England, but a cold front will cut into this air mass by Tuesday, resulting in showers and thunderstorms, and setting us up for a cooler, drier, windy Wednesday. An additional trough may cause a few more showers on Wednesday.

High pressure from Canada will bring beautiful summer weather to the Northeast during the second half of the week. It will be dry & warm, though humidity may start to creep back up as we reach next weekend.

    1. I like what I see so far. We’ll have to keep an eye on the jet riding over the central US ridge though. The ring of fire can produce MCS’s periodically and we may be entering such a period very soon. Sometimes those things come along in a WNW flow aloft, east of the ridge axis, and impact the weather for a good part of a day or night (unexpected heavy rain, lingering debris cloud, etc.).

  1. The weather this past weekend was really a gem. I met a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time yesterday and we enjoyed a delicious dessert outside at a table under an umbrella at a bakery nearby. Other than that my husband and me just relaxed and went to another neighborhood barbecue.

Next weekend I am hoping the weather will be good as we will be heading down to the Cape – Hyannisport, actually, to spend some time with friends.

To me, midsummer is late July – early Aug. Enjoy the rest of the day everyone!

  2. Next weekend looks good at this point and for that matter this week looks good. The only bump in the road looks to be on Tuesday.
Thunderstorm Index tomorrow at a 2 which is MODERATE since I am thinking there will be some severe weather around but I don’t see a widespread outbreak right now. If that looks to change I’ll upgrade. The biggest threat with any storm that fires tomorrow will be heavy rainfall, vivid lightning, and strong winds. It will not be a washout tomorrow so don’t cancel plans but keep an eye to those skies during the afternoon and if they look threatening head indoors.

  3. Thanks everyone for responding to my question regarding “mid-summer”! I guess there is no clear cut “halfway” point on summer so to speak. Interestingly, I have always regarded February clearly as the midway point to winter. 🙂

On to another topic, I was looking at yesterday’s climatological data for Boston and on July 10, 1955 there was a “trace” of snow in Boston on that date. The 1955 summer was a very hot one, not from personal knowledge but from weather and other NE related books I have read over the years. Is “hail” considered in snowfall totals? That is the only other option I can think of given the season obviously other than data error.

  4. 92F at Logan at 1pm…..wondering if tonight’s the night where the temps fall slowly, with the suburbs still in the mid to high 70s near midnight and Logan is somewhere around 85F. That type of night has not happened yet this summer, as the few other hot days have had a line of showers/storms come thru in the evening to offer many communities a cool down.

    1. I love nights like this one. At least the air is moving. I’m going outside with my son for a little while to enjoy our free Slurpee from 7 Eleven. 🙂

      1. The slurpree really hit the spot on a day like today and the best of all it was my
favorite four letter word in the English language FREE!

          1. there is no way to beat time with your son, something cool on a hot summer day and having it free!!

  5. This feels like July with the heat and humidity today. Thankfully its no 100 degree weather like we had last July and this is a short stay with the humidity. Lot of severe weather reports out of parts of the Midwest today. I don’t think it will be that bad here across SNE tomorrow but I would not be surprised to see some severe weather but nothing widespread and certainly nothing like back on June 1st. Damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours, and vivid lightning look to be the biggest threat with any storms that should fire up tomorrow.
