On The Edge

2:46AM

We sit on the northeastern edge of a big heatwave, but it has expanded enough to get the Boston area into it, and this will last through today, before some drier air from Canada comes down and pushes the heat and humidity away again for a while. While it is true we have a cold front moving across the region into a hot/humid air mass today, much of the energy available to help create storms will be pushing offshore during the day with the air too warm and dry above to support widespread storm development. Isolated to scattered storms are most likely along and east of Route 95 for a period of time from late morning through late afternoon.

A secondary trough will pass through on Wednesday and may trigger an additional shower or storm. In fact, the threat of showers and storms is slightly greater Wednesday than it is today, due to better support above for storm development. Great summer weather is expected from Thursday through the weekend as high pressure takes over.

TODAY: More clouds than sun during the morning. More sun than clouds in the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms mainly near and east of Route 95 mostly between 11AM & 4PM.  Hot and humid but a little drier toward evening. High 90 to 95. Wind SW 10 to 15 mph.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Mild and drier. Low 65 to 70. Wind W 5 to 15 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Warm and drier. High 81 to 86. Wind W 10 to 15 mph.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Cooler and dry. Low 58 to 63. Wind NW 5 to 15 mph.

THURSDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Warm and dry. High 79 to 84. Wind NW 5 to 15 mph.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 65. High 85.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 66. High 86.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 68. High 87.

  1. I know this is looking out a ways but how is the pattern for next week looking? I am on vacation on the coast of Maine. I know the weekend looks good; but Monday is looking a little iffy. I just hope the pattern next week is progressive and nothing gets hung up.

  2. So far Boston has had “4” 90 degree days this summer. The normal is 14 days.

    How about just for fun try and predict how many 90 degree days we will have?

    2010 = 24 days
    2009 = 4 days
    2008 = 8 days

    My prediction for 2011 = 11 days 🙂

  3. I just took a step outside, the air feels so heavy and gross. currently have a dew point of 74 degrees, just brutal.

    There are signs we are headed into a warmer pattern, so im guessing 16 90 degree days.

  4. It has the feel of Florida when the dew points are in the 70s. Thankfully relief is coming and it will be a short stay with these high dew points.

  5. 90 Degree Days reported at Logan? I like Philips guess so I will pick a different number.

    Put me down for 10 days.

    Winner get’s bragging rights until the first frost competition. 🙂

  6. I just read the noaa discussion from this morning. They indicated that any thunderstorm activity will be minimal. Best chance will be in eastern mass. I took a peek out of my window here in Dorchester and noticed some billowing clouds popping up to the west. I wonder if do indeed get some storms/showers this afternoon.

  7. I started a database if that works for everyone. I can keep it updated for all competitions if that works? This is great fun!

  8. As expected, the dewpoints are now falling. Boston’s has dropped from 71 to 66, though the temp has spiked to 94 with the downsloping WNW wind. That’s why I went 90-95 there today.

    1. Boston’s latest dp is now at 64…TK any chance those dp’s can get down into the 50’s soon?

      1. I think the drop off from here will be a little slower, so around 60 by later this evening. Dewpoint may still hang around 60 tomorrow until that trough passes, then drop into the 50s for Thursday-Friday.

  9. Clearly my number is a little higher then most but I am thinking we get a couple in Sept that might do the trick:). We shall see.

  10. 12 at Logan

    Further inland from Lawerence to Worcester to Springfield to Hartford I expect the number will approach 20.
