Tuesday Forecast

7:36AM

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 6-10)
We remain in the “dank tank” today as low pressure to the south and high pressure to the north combine for a damp and very cool June day, one in which record low maximum temperatures may be challenged. Slow improvement follows on Wednesday as high pressure to the north dries the region out. But another low pressure area to the south will push the clouds back in during Thursday and likely lead to some wet weather Thursday night into Friday before improvement occurs yet again by the start of the coming weekend.
TODAY: Overcast. Drizzle, areas of fog, and periods of rain. Highs 48-55. Wind E to NE 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Overcast. Drizzle, areas of fog, and periods of rain, but all diminishing overnight. Lows 45-50. Wind NE to N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
WEDNESDAY: Very slow clearing north to south but completely clearing may never reach the South Coast. Highs 55-60 coast, 61-68 interior. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Increasing clouds. Chance of rain at night. Lows 48-55. Highs 63-70, coolest coast.
FRIDAY: Cloudy with a chance of rain favoring southern and eastern areas mainly morning. Slow clearing later Lows 50-58. Highs 63-70.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers. Lows 52-59. Highs 70-77, cooler coast.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 11-15)
Warm to hot weather June 11-14. Showers/thunderstorms possible June 14 and/or 15 with a cool down by June 15.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 16-20)
Cool early period followed by a warming trend which may be lead in by a period of wet weather.

  1. Thank you TK

Another word I have nor heard in a while and forgot about. My mom and nana used it. Dank. What a great word. Made me smile. Thanks.

  2. A member of Suttons board of selectmen posted this on FB. I would like to share it here.

    Order of the Day:

“Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force:

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.

The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.

In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory.

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

General Dwight D Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe

      1. JPD – I write with tears in my eyes. I thought your dad may have been there. I’m humbled.

        1. Thank you. He didn’t talk much about his experiences until about a year before his passing. It certainly seriously affected his whole life once he returned home. I cannot imagine the horror these men went through and I am sure my dad left out much, but I heard enough. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

          Heroes one and all.

Btw, not Normandy, but for a real taste of what being subjected to enemy fire would be like, check on the
new movie due to be released in July called “Dunkirk”.
          http://www.dunkirkmovie.com/

      2. I wish I had had the chance to thank him. There are no words for that kind of sacrifice – even when our combat soldiers come home they have almost always sacrificed an enormous part of themselves to the war and we are forever in their debt.

        1. Beautifully said, Mama Mia.

Old Salty, thank you for sharing. I am sure it is far from easy but we owe so much to your dad and to all the men and women who have fought for all that we have.

    1. I was hoping for a morning song. Love Clapton….alone, with Yardbirds (is that correct) and with Cream. Thank you.

      1. I can’t access youtube from work, so what song is that
by Clapton? He is one of my all time favorites.

    2. Years ago I saw him play this live in the rain at Great Woods – right after the song the sun broke out of the clouds for sunset. Was an amazing night!

            1. It was first thing I saw when I opened FB this morning. I am a huge fan of this selectman. I suspect he and I have differing political views nationally; but townwide, I love his approach and that he is happy to answer any and all questions. And anyone can imagine that I have a ton of them!

  3. Thanks TK !

2 or 3 recent 00z or 12z GFS op runs have hinted at something coming out of the Caribbean or Bahamas and headed either up the east coast or OTS. Today’s 00z run is the most aggressive version of this feature so far. I didn’t really look too closely if this was purely tropical or a hybrid system.

  4. Just awesome weather. I am at my wit’s end. Thank God I got an oil delivery late last week. 🙂

    1. We got one also. Last year we had one in early April and then not again until very late October. Oil is less expensive than AC even with the minisplit supplementing the central so I’m happy. Although, the heat isn’t on and my windows are open a few inches.

And I do like the phrase wit’s end. For some odd reason it made me think of Jack Sparrow 🙂

  5. Logan and Worcester down another 1F at 11am, to 48F and 45F respectively.

Too bad it was slightly milder at midnight, because nearing midday, temps are running 3-5F below record low maximums.

    1. Just can’t beat this weather. Looking like Friday night North Reading graduation will be indoors. First time in the new high school gymnasium. I prefer the outside graduations. Will be handing out the diplomas as I am school committee chair again this year.

    2. Unless the temp goes up this evening, Logan would have the distinction
of tying the record low MAX, I believe from 1923. 😀

    1. Uh oh…. we are supposed to host my son’s class for a pool party Friday afternoon – any chance it might not be raining from 12-4? If no chance I might try to move it to Saturday now…

        1. Thanks – I’ll sit on my hands for a bit…

Does it definitely look like Sat will be nice or is that subject to change too?

          Nothing like NE spring!!

    2. I don’t know if it will be exactly like this, but I think Friday is a hit !

Sometimes a good New England storm that hits seems to transition us from one jet stream configuration to a completely different one.

  6. Thanks, TK.

Blackstone, we agree that this is the “bottom of the barrel.” It can’t get worse than this. My apartment’s temp is down to 61F (heat was shut off the other day). I’m wearing a turtleneck. Even my cat’s cold, as she’s sought warmth under the blankets on my bed (this is usually a winter thing for her).

Vicki, thanks for sharing the piece on D-Day.

    1. You are welcome.

Did anyone check to see if the barrel had a hole in the bottom?

      Just sayin’ 😉

  7. 12Z Euro is also a miss for Friday. That is good news, BUT it is only Tuesday. 😀 😀 😀

  8. Sitting at a balmy 48 degrees here in Walpole. I got married 3 years ago today. Thank God it’s not this year!

    1. I would have guessed two at most. Boy did time go quickly. Happy Anniversary. You have an extra special person to celebrate with you this year 🙂

  9. Just curious…How did educators decide on 180 days to teach K-12 students? Is it more of an accommodation for teachers than the actual time it takes to teach lessons so that the student becomes proficient in all subjects? If I am not mistaken, other countries require 200+ days of instruction, not saying that this nation should adopt that either.

    1. I am quite sure the 180 day plan was setup a long time ago to coincide with the agrarian calendar – kids would be home to tend to crops and for the harvest. It should be changed, but would be a take a lot of work and involve a lot of negotiations with unions.

      1. I think you are correct also. In the link I provided all states vary right around the 180 number. Hours can differ. We need to change a lot about our schools and it amazes me that we have excellent examples and do not learn from them. The most important difference to me is that we do not value and empower our teachers as much as we should. Not all, that is.

    2. I’m not sure it is the number of days that matter as the hours. I found this.
I typically search for Finland when it comes to school success because it is one of the best in the world. We are not.

In 2010, Finnish children aged 9-11 spent an average 640 hours in school a year, compared to an OECD average of 821 hours. In England, the average was 899 hours, in France, 847 hours and in Japan, 800 hours. We vary by state. I found this table. http://www.ecs.org/clearinghouse/95/05/9505.pdf

      1. Yes, Mass. requires 900 hours for elementary and middle school and 990 hours for high school.

      2. One other thing, as a country, the USA is definitely not one of the best in the world when it comes to education. However, if Massachusetts was its own country (and these days I wish it was), we rank as one of the top 5 in education in the world.

        1. I do know that MA has great school systems. I grew up in a town that has had one of the most consistenly high rated school systems in the state coupled with the first several years of private education. However, I will never agree with teaching to the test or with standardized testing of any sort. I think some towns in MA are moving forward with their approach to all kids and not just what they consider the brightest. Oddly, it is the schools that might not place as high in rankings that are taking a better approach. I think because they put each child ahead of where they rank.

    3. My son is in private school and I learned – to my shock (and horror!) that they only have 150 days of school less snow days. I guess the more you pay the less you get 😉

Seriously I assume the logic is that with smaller class sizes more can be accomplished in less time – his school has classes of 10-15 kids. However I did the per firm cost once and almost passed out!

      1. My son also went to private high school and I too was surprised at how few days the school year was. I think you are correct about the smaller class sizes, which allowed them to get more done each class period.

      2. If you look into the school system in Finland, they not only have far fewer hours, but they have far less work out of school. Their view is that a child needs free play. They also do not have standardized tests. More can sometimes mean less. 🙂 It is a fascinating approach. Mac started (many years ago) in school in Sweden which even then had the same approach.

        1. I went to public school myself but we chose private school for Sammy exactly because of our concerns over Westford’s high MCAS rankings coupled with low per capita student spending (50-75 percent of the spending per student of many nearby towns) and low teacher salaries. To me that is the perfect storm that logically can signify streamlined, efficient teaching to the test. I recently lobbied hard for a property tax override to allow the town to offer more competitive – albeit still low – salaries to our amazing teachers. It barely passed. I’m very glad it did pass but very disappointed in the narrow margin by which it did. However we are a bit perplexed as to what to do next as almost all the boys in my son’s school go on to attend Fenn (all boys school) and I could write a novel about my concerns with single sex education for boys. Note my feminist sensibilities would not have felt the same about all girls’ schools which I think can be very beneficial in certain cases for young women. But for boys I feel it can go either way….

          1. Great comment and legitimate concerns. And uxbridge just voted no on override and the best of the best teachers are being let go. I will never understand how people don’t invest in schools …no matter your Age. I know you will make the best decision for your son….I absolutely know it.

  10. How about a chart from my weather station depicting rainfall this past week through
now. Pretty gruesome. Btw, this is a pretty neat feature of this weather station, assuming you have the mobile app for it. 😀

  11. Current obs atop Mt. Washington: 28F (windchill 10F with sustained winds of 50mph); snow pellets and freezing fog. A little snow has started to accumulate. My guess is more will accumulate overnight as the wind shifts to a east/northeasterly. Nothing out of the ordinary for Mt. Washington. However, the prolonged nature of the current cold spell is somewhat unusual.

  12. It looks like NYC is rain free, unless there is a heavy drizzle, looks like the Sox play tonight.

    1. That is not too far from the Bronx. The stadium is barely over the Harlem
      River from Manhattan.

  13. WHW account back in a few min…

    A few quick notes…

My dad was serving in Europe on this date in 1944, but I am not sure exactly where he was. Somewhere in England, France, or Germany. My mother thinks it was Germany at this time.

This weather is perfect for getting lots done inside, and I am indeed. I actually got a lot done outside this weekend despite the festivities. The weather was nice for that despite some showers around on Saturday.

I do think that system is coming up Thursday night and into Friday. I don’t think it’ll be as potent as the 12z NAM depicts, but it’s something to watch. I have been reluctant all week to go with solid improvement too quickly. There was always a hint that something might be down there. Apply the knowledge of model limitations to that, and this is why we make forecasts the way we do in the world of meteorology, or should anyway. SAK knows this well, because it’s how we learned. Anybody can look at a model output and say that’s the forecast, but it doesn’t work like that.

    1. Thanks TK.

Your Dad is a hero and I know you must be very proud of his service. My family is mostly navy or army – my Grandfather was in the Navy in WWII, several Uncles served in Korea, and my late Uncle Mike was a Green Beret in Vietnam. When Mike passed away last fall he left me his green beret and canteen from his tours – I have never been prouder of any honor.

Regarding this weekend do you think pushing the pool party to Saturday morning will be any safer or would I just be delaying the inevitable? Thanks!!

  14. TK, your father is a hero, as is JP Dave’s Dad and all the others. I’ll never forget my visit to the beaches of Normandy. My children won’t forget that visit, either.

JP Dave, thanks for letting us know about the weather in NYC. It’s too bad there is so little discussion about a series of this magnitude. I tune in sports radio and hear more stories about TB’s possible concussion last season (per Gisele’s statement), Patriots’ mini camp, and the NBA finals. I just wonder, doesn’t anyone follow hockey. There’s an actual competitive finals going on in a league (NHL) that has some degree of parity and great playoffs leading up to the finals. And, the return of a Sox-Yankees rivalry is a beautiful thing. Yet, no-one seems to care. To paraphrase the closing word to many of our President’s tweets: Sad.

    1. Indeed. I agree. We don’t hear baseball UNTIL ALL the other sports are
done and then comes football starting with camp in July.

      re: Hockey
My Brother tells me that both coaches for the finals are from
Massachusetts which would be a first? No?

      Peter Laviolette
After a 0–3 start of the 2013–14 season by the Flyers, Laviolette was fired October 7, 2013. He was replaced by Assistant Coach Craig Berube. On May 6, 2014, Laviolette was hired to become the head coach of the Nashville Predators.

I’ll bet anything we have NEVER seen that before.

pretty cool in my opinion. A traditionally CANADIAN sport coached
in the finals be 2 Americans. AWESOME!!! Must fry the Canadians
      asses! 😀

  15. The Cup Finals I have been watching and it is entertaining so far. The NBA Finals have had two blow out games. I don’t think Cleveland gets swept in the series.

    1. For entertainment value, the NHL finals beat the NBA finals on a routine basis, IMO. 🙂

  16. JP Dave, it is indeed awesome to have two American coaches in the Stanley Cup Finals, and both are from Massachusetts.

Last night’s second period was electric. It was funny to see Charles Barkley at the game and during the intermission report. He likes hockey and the competitive nature of the NHL playoffs. He’s also been vocal about the lack of parity in the NBA and how boring most of the games have been throughout the playoffs. People forget that in the 80s while there were two dominant teams – Lakers and Celtics – there were lots of compelling series, and teams that actually put up a fight against both the Lakers and Celtics during the run-up to the finals (in some cases beating the Lakers or Celtics to get to the finals).

  17. Prediction for the NHL finals remaining games.
Road teams win from here on in. Cup will be hoisted by Nashville.

      1. Has been a fabulous Cup. I watch almost no regular season. I watch every night Stanley Cup from opening night of first round. Greatest league in the world. Passing is beyond belief.

        1. You all keep talking about this and making it sound fun and I’m going to have to start watching.

            1. Got a Canadian Football game lined up to watch that day. Shows you my current interest level in hockey!

  18. 47 balmy degrees. 1.15 rain so far.

A friend in FL said it hasn’t been the same there.

  19. I’m struggling to find the proper adjectives for this weather and that includes weaving in a string of old school George Carlin profanity.

In roughly only 90-100 days at most, we’ll be crashing toward jackets again at least at night.

My winter jacket is still in circulation. Wore it today because it is still winter in my eyes. I don’t care what the calendar technically says.

    1. That doesn’t mean it’s right. 🙂

The latest model does not become the forecast… 😉

      1. I’m staying with the wet forecast for early Friday for southeastern areas (RI, eastern MA).
