Thursday Forecast

7:07AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 5-9)
Bright and blustery today as the rush of chilly air continues in from Canada via the Great Lakes. At least the sun will be unlimited for the Red Sox home opener at Fenway Park. Those in the sun and sheltered from the wind will find it rather pleasant, but if you are in a part of the park with shade and exposed to the wind, you’ll feel rather chilled. Wind will also have an impact on fly balls as it crosses the field from the third base side to the first base side. Our fast-flowing weather pattern will continue and this will bring 2 precipitation threats, one on Friday as a small low pressure area moves through from west to east, and on Saturday a low pressure ripples up the front trailing from the first low. With some cold air in place, there is the opportunity for some snow for portions of the region with both events, though neither will be significant and the second one may miss entirely. Dry weather is expected for Sunday and Monday.
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 42-48. Wind W 15-25 MPH gusting 30-45 MPH.
TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 25-32. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.
FRIDAY: Cloudy with a period of precipitation from mid morning to late afternoon, snow north and west of Boston, rain southeastern MA and southern RI, and mix in between. Minor accumulation of a coating to 1 inch on unpaved surfaces mainly north and west of Boston. Highs 35-42. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Cloudy. A period of snow/mix possible, favoring southern areas. Lows from the upper 20s to lower 30s. Highs from the upper 30s to lower 40s.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows from the lower to middle 30s. Highs from the lower to middle 40s.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows from the lower to middle 30s. Highs from the middle to upper 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 10-14)
A storm is possible on April 10 possibly to early April 11 with rain/mix/snow. Fair weather follows and there is the possibility of a significant warm-up away from ocean-influenced coastal areas later in the period.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 15-19)
A quick cool-down may come to start the period followed by a low pressure system bringing some unsettled weather into mid period before drier weather returns.

    1. Only 1/6 into it. You’ll have your fair share of days you like, but you gotta wait a bit longer to start seeing them. πŸ™‚

      1. Yeah I know. Wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t delaying my work…already a month behind schedule. Hey so is the blocking pattern gone or in the process of breaking down?

  1. Good morning all and happy opening day! I will be one of those fans at the game in the shade behind first base in section 15 grandstand. I remember last year was chilly also in the upper 40’s but not as breezy. Looking forward to it though and it wouldn’t bother me if it was warmer or colder outside. The Sights and sounds are all that I need for a great game of ball. Go Red Sox!!!

    1. There is truly a feeling that Fenway gives you that transcends all. That feeling never leaves a person. Enjoy tonight

      1. Thank you Vicki! At 42 I still get to games as early as possible to see the field. I head down to Pesky pole as its one of my favorite sights of the park looking and scanning from center field around third to home. I just can’t explain it and have always been that way. I have been to many other parks and some are so much more fan friendly and easier to maneuver but Fenway is special and its home.

        1. I understand exactly what you mean. It is impossible to explain. I have relatives and friends from around the country and even out of the country who all say the exact same

      2. I know what you mean.

Witnessing Ted Williams and Micky Mantle play at Fenway is something I will never forget. Nothing beats a hot dog and peanuts at good ole Fenway.

        1. Wow some amazing sights and memories you must have witnessing the greats. Growing up I had a huge passion for that era of Baseball and I still do. It must have been awesome seeing those names in the score card. Just Awesome!

          1. To be sure. As long as I live I will never forget
Micky Mantle, batting right handed, hitting one
over the wall to the right of the flag pole in Center.
A prodigious wallop I am here to tell you. I have
never ever seen a baseball hit that far and there
have been some monster home runs in recent times.

        2. I still can remember my first trip to Fenway Park and being totally amazed at how green it was/is.
I still do. Up until then, I had only seen Fenway on a black and white TV screen.
Yaz will always be my guy.
          Big Papi a close second.

  2. Good morning again.

It’s going to be a shock for the Sox players (Tamp as well) compared
to what they have been experiencing so far this season. Don’t expect
a slugfest. πŸ˜€ When I played ball, I couldn’t stand this kind of weather!
    I dreaded hitting the baseball.

    1. I know what you mean. The sting in yours hands from a hit and the ball never seamed to travel far from the infield. Everything kinda of ached after the game. The players will have that very strong April sun though. The real challenge today will be the wind. There will be a few misjudged fly balls today for sure.

  3. I can’t wait to take my son to Fenway for the first time. I just hope I can still afford it by then

    1. HA yeah. Tried to get Celtics tickets a few months back…halfway decent seats for two were almost $1,000! No thanks.

I remember as a kid you could walk up to the Fenway box office right before a game a buy a bleacher seat…even as a teenager using spare money. Shame.

      1. I can remember bleacher seats costing 50 cents. How do you
like them apples? Box seats were $3.75 and grandstand $2.75.

        1. Damn…that’s nuts. I can’t recall the prices for me but it was likely mid to late-1980’s…

      1. I had not thought of that for when grandkids get older. Will keep in mind. Thank you, Matt.

We were fortunate as we always had our tickets left at the ticket office for us by Ted which is why we were able to go to several games a week back in the day.

  4. Thanks TK. Walking to class here in Plymouth, NH this morning, with a temp in the 20s and winds gusting close to 40? Genuinely one of the most unpleasant mornings for walking of the entire cold season. Bitterly cold. Only thing missing was some blowing snow.

  5. I guess I’m in the minority here, but having visited several new ballparks only reinforces my belief that Fenway should have been replaced many years ago. For all its charms, it is the most uncomfortable park in baseball β€” Among the issues, the seats are too small for most normal sized humans, the majority of seats don’t face home plate and the concourses are too small and too crowded. Call me a curmudgeon, but I would much rather see a new park in a better location.

    1. Oh,

As many memories that I have, I agree with you 100%!

I am not a little person and I can barely squeeze into the seat and there
is NO place for my legs. I am literally stuffed into the seat. Very uncomfortable
to say the least. Then for many of the seats, the sight lines suck and you can only see the action by turning sideways.

I am totally and completely in favor of building a new park and then
tearing down that old relic. πŸ˜€

  6. Thank you, TK.

The light and sun angle tells us it’s April. The blustery cold does NOT. I was about as cold on my early morning run as a typical day in January. My hands, face, and head were chilled (and I wore a ski band).

Curious to know about next week’s potential storm. I’m due to fly to New Jersey on Tuesday for a business meeting, and will come back Wednesday evening. Wouldn’t that be something if they canceled a meeting due to snow in April. I hope they don’t because I’m getting paid for my participation. But, we shall see.

    1. Right now, the Euro says not to worry. Still a bit of time on this, but
I’d Say NJ is safe on this one. Boston? Well, who knows. Early indications
are that Boston will be fine, but stay tuned.

  7. Im with Joshua. Felt like January this morning.
I put the trash out this morning at 5 am before i drove to work. 27 degrees and the wind was ripping. Miserable!!

I’d hate to be sitting at Fenway today. And I agree with Ace and Dave. Fenway is a dump. If youve ever been to Jacobs field or Camden yards, you want a new ball park.
I go once a year and sit in the State Street Pavilion and get the all you can eat buffet. Its pricey, but once a year to get decent food, good seats, and clean bathrooms is worth it, sort of.

I took my 2 kids to a Celtics game and we sat in the nose bleeds. $500 bill about covered it. πŸ™

      1. It’ll be $1500 for somewhat OK seats below the balcony if a new stadium is constructed…..says she who always had the best seats in the house at no cost πŸ˜‰

  8. Only that that would need to be put into the park from Fenway would be the green monster πŸ˜‰

    1. Would not matter one way or the other as it would no longer be the same. We are in far too big a hurry to erase history. Makes me sad in so many areas and always recalls that song to mind…they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Also makes me sad that our children or grandchildren will never have memories they will always feel but can never quite explain. When I read Diamond’s comment this morning, it made my day. It was no surprise at all when Diamond added an explanation of a feeling impossible to describe.

      1. This reminds me of the save the planet arguement. I am not saying we shouldn’t do stuff or speed it up but no matter what we do the sun will implode at some point and none of it will matter ha. Like born to die I guess.

As for Fenway…I don’t go and I don’t care BUT it can’t last forever. It was new at one point and new memories will be formed in a new staudium at some point. Not sure what was on that site before it was built…unless it was a field already something might have been there that had memories for other people.

        1. Saving the planet is a must. Saving Fenway is definitely not a must. As far as lasting forever….have you been to Rome or many of the other cities where they do cherish works of art from the past. After a couple thousand years, the only thing destroy those is man made pollution, etc.

        2. Something else from space would likely hit earth before that, but we are talking very large geological time scales. We have changed this earth like no other living being on this earth. We have gone to every type of biome, If we want to be technical we are an invasive species in many habitats.

          1. If you want to think of yourself as an invasive species have at it. Everyone has their own belief system…like it or not Western Civ is based on this:

“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

            1. Genesis 1:26-28. A powerful verse that to me clearly states that it is our responsibility to care for the earth and all living things in the way that God would wish.

      2. Except, there would be a brand new stadium, not a “pink hotel, a boutique and a swinging hot spot…” πŸ˜€

    1. It was very very much like this on 4-5-1982.

I have an audio recording of the AccuWeather forecast on WHDH-AM 850 in Boston from that Monday afternoon, and some audio of NOAA Weather Radio from Boston as well.

  9. The fact that all of the talk here is about Fenway, one can only assume all the remaining snow events are now off the table.

    1. True … except for tomorrow, Saturday, Tuesday or any other surprise that comes along prior to June 1st.

    2. That would be an incorrect assumption. It’s April 5. Keep in mind the ‘safe date’.

    1. gfs has it as well it just forms it up in the Canadian maritime. it be interesting what the euro says, probably says, the Canadian needs to get off the juice.

      1. Once Joshua is safely on his way to NJ, I am hoping for enough snow to keep me from driving to NWH. It is a follow up visit only and I’ll get to find out if I have more kidney stones so having to postpone it would work very well for me!!

I got a huge kick out of Eric’s blog and his comparison to being a meteorologist lately to driving to FL with kids

        http://boston.cbslocal.com/2018/04/04/when-will-it-stop-snowing/

  10. Yesterday, the ECMWF was all excited about a big warmup April 13-14 and the GFS was like “nope, high pressure in eastern Canada, chilly NE wind!”.

    Today, they have switched roles.

  11. I apologize if someone has already posted this. It is on the Mt. Washington FB page and was posted about five hours ago.

Ten consecutive hours of category 3 hurricane force winds (111 mph or greater) have now come to an end on the summit, though gusts are still exceeding 100 mph as of this writing!

      1. Did you see my song link? I thought of you when I posted it….well, you were the one who used blustery and I know you are a Winnie the Pooh fan so it only made sense πŸ™‚

  12. Wind is still blustery from the west. It was awesome in the night whistling….or howling…through the cracked window.

    1. One of the 5 windows (3 of which face west) does a pretty loud moan/whistle when a west wind gets to 30 MPH or greater.

      1. I love that I’m not the only one who does this. I have a new client who said he figured out how to crack his windows just right. Needless to say, he’s my favorite client yet and I love all clients.

  13. Vicki, thanks for letting us know about the summit of Mt. Washington. Must have been dangerous wind chills. Of course, that in itself is not unusual for April. And, the Presidentials often get lots of snow in April and May.

And yes, that whistling sound of howling wind is something. It’s comforting when you’re about to go to sleep, but not so when you’re headed out into the elements.

At Target Field in Minneapolis the high temperature today was 38F. So I guess we can’t complain. At Fenway, relatively balmy by comparison. You would not want to hold the bat wrong – against the grain – on a day like today.

I saw that at Target Field a bald eagle landed on one of the starting pitcher’s shoulder while he was doing warm-ups. I believe the bird was part of the opening day ceremony and got confused as to where he should go.

    1. I cannot imagine the thrill of a bald eagle landing on my shoulder

My sister in law has angioplasty tomorrow so I was out on deck chatting with her. She laughed because not only did I uncharacteristically need a sweatshirt but I had to go inside after 15-20 minutes. She said it is also a cold spring in Atlanta.

  14. Back from a great opening day at Fenway. Like Dave quoted this morning ” don’t expect a slugfest”. That was very true especially the first 8 innings for sure. The field temp said 39 at the start of the game but not sure of the accuracy of that reading.

  15. Honestly it wasn’t to bad up behind first base. It was breezy. Being on the wall or bleachers must have been pretty rough. A couple fly balls got carried another several feet.

    1. They’ll be ok for the playoffs. These games are not essential. I don’t care if they finish in first place or not.

  16. …my nephew and his wife welcomed their fourth child (twin boys and now two girls) today at 4:30 p.m. If the Red Sox had not gone to extra innings Gwendolyn Marie might have been a Storrow Drive Baby — only one hour of labor for her mom and the drive went right by Fenway! All doing well and thankful for the miracle of a new life!
