Saturday Morning Update

8:39AM

A disturbance is crossing the region this morning. This disturbance has a little more punch than I expected it to, giving me a bit of a wake-up call with extensive clouds and even some scattered showers and isolated downpours around southern New England. The clouds will be the most prominent feature of this disturbance and not so much any rainfall as it hangs around and then finally wanders away during the course of today.

The only tweaks to the previous forecast besides for today will be to add a risk of thunderstorms to Sunday afternoon as it looks like the atmosphere will be a little moreΒ  primed to pop something. Also going to bump temperatures up slightly for the first half of next week.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TODAY: Mostly cloudy this morning except a few sunnier areas just south of Boston with a slight chance of a few additional mainly isolated showers. Partly sunny this afternoon. Highs around 90 most areas, slightly cooler Cape Cod & Islands. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 65-70. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny and hazy. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Hot and humid. Highs around 90. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy AM. Mostly sunny PM. Low 70. High 91.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 71. High 93.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny AM. Partly cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms late day. Low 72. High 95.

  1. Thanks TK. Looks like a nice high pressure coming for Thursday afternoon into the weekend next week. Hopefully the air will become less humid too!

  2. Thanks TK.
Before we get to Thursday watching the timing of that front on Wednesday. If it comes through during the peak heating of the day then we COULD see strong to possibly severe storms.
Tomorrow biggest threat with the storms is the POTENTIAL for heavy rain and vivid lightning. I think the severe threat is low but I would not rule out some places seeing a strong thunderstorm. Thunderstorm Index just a 1.

    1. I agree JJ.

Interesting note from yesterday: On my way to Canobie Lake Park I saw the development, brief maturity, and decay of an isolated thundershower over northeastern MA from Route 93N. This very short-lived cumulonimbus cloud went up on a sea breeze front but did not last long.

Despite the disturbance around this morning-midday it looks like a nice summer day for the most part if you can handle humidity and some heat. I’m heading to Revere Beach this afternoon and tonight for a half beach day, a sand sculpture tour, of course Kelly’s Roast Beef, and a big fireworks display on the beach.

        1. There may have been something there. I only looked visually and when I checked the radar later I had zoomed it up on NE MA. Northhampton’s would have just been airmass or maybe some renegade boundary from something else.

          1. Thanks TK – I could not tell what it was – just looked like a small cell with a red center but literally popped in place and then was gone next time I checked.

  3. Not much in the way of storms this year, usually we get something between June15th-July15th, anyways enjoy the heat ugh!!

  4. TK I am heading to Bushkill PA in the poconos next Friday for a week any thoughts of long term forecast? And as we get closer maybe a little update, please and thank you πŸ™‚

        1. Last two weeks of August :). John my son in law just sent in an app for a job at the post office in Pembroke. Don’t know if there is more than one. Is it pretty stable?

  5. The Northern Lights are on tonight! All of Canada is expected to get a complete view. Anyone here in SNE who gets an opportunity to see them, let us know. Those away from city lights have a slight opportunity. I do not have that luxury unfortunately.

    Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.
The Aurora Borealis occurs in what level of the atmosphere?
    A. Stratosphere
    B. Troposhere
    C. Ionosphere
    D. Mesophere

  7. It’s 80 with 67 dP already and for some reason doesn’t feel it. There is a light breeze and it felt lovely to sit outside for that first cup of coffee.

    How are those storms looking?

  8. Noticed that Joe Joyce has the HHH breaking on Thursday with perhaps lower temps than TK. I think it has to do with timing of the arrival of cooler Canadian Maritime air.But Thurs-Sat looking good!

    1. Joe also said that perhaps the heat could stay away for August as well.

Sounds too good to be true, but let’s see what happens there! πŸ™‚

      1. and some rainshowers in the Ithica area, keeping the temps in the 70s, but raising the dewpoints to 70F also…..we were just having breakfest and we saw on TWC that they are forecasting 101F for Syracuse Tuesday. I’m hoping that was either a misprint or a misread on my part.

              1. Yes, we are lucky to have as much time off as I do and we all love to camp, so its a nice mixture and my wife enjoys finding the places for us to go.

  9. Nothing like some rain to get one into the laundromat (and one that has internet access πŸ™‚ ) while my wife and kids go somewhere fun and cool…..hmmmmm πŸ™‚ well, at leastIcan get caught up on the Red Sox πŸ™ and the weather πŸ™‚

Logan Airport Climo thru 7/14 temps and precip departures for July (per Taunton climo data)

    +4.2F / -1.25 inches

          1. Blast tom. I would recomend to anybody. Great for the family or couple. awesome kids programs.

  10. Were there any reports of anyone in New England able to see the Northern Lights? I understand that extreme NNE locals had the best chance…what little there was.

    1. I didn’t hear any. My husband and I were trying to figure out why they are so far south. Do you know if this is something that has always happened or a new event? I hear of it more and more. We were also going to compare the longitude (is it longitude?) of Sweden for instance with our area but I didn’t get to that yet. My husband said he never saw them when living in Sweden but we know his dad saw them but was somewhere north of Sweden.

  11. Some storms moving into CT. To the north it looks pretty benign. I wonder if that line will zap the energy enough so the one behind it never forms into much. And if I’m not mistaken Pete b was finally wrong. Didn’t he call for on and off rain all day – or a good part of it

        1. Is your daughter already looking in pembroke. They would be very happy here. Nice country town. They should buy now before its to late with the rates. Also great schools.

          1. They are looking but have a bunch of college loans to pay first so won’t be for a year. We are thinking – just thinking – of buying a retirement place in the area too since prices are low. Tough though as we want to see water but not be right on it.

            1. Some nice ponds in pembroke. I would say also your better off not being on the ocean, to many problems during the winter. Many people in pembroke by stickers for duxbury beach. You can drive right on the beach and even cook out right on the beach.

    1. Yes, a few days ago, Pete was pretty solid on a very wet Sunday. I disagreed with him on that one.

  12. Thursday into the weekend looks nice but we have to get there first and that may come with strong to possibly severe storms on Wednesday. It does not look any widespread severe weather event at this point.
