  1. Thanks for the update TK!

Call me crazy (or call me maybe) but I’ve noticed something about the foliage. It seems like the colors came on strong and bright but since then whatever trees had begun the change have dulled considerably and the new trees changing, the colors have been lackluster. I know it’s still early in the fall and we are far from peak but am I crazy or has anyone else noticed this?

    1. The early trees were largely maples and they tend to burst out brightly. Others change more slowly and the colors are less bright. I think things seem different to us when we are not kids anymore because as kids we focus on the bright colors and every Fall seemed incredible, and as adults we see a broader view with all the trees taken into account, making the overall picture a little less colorful.

      1. Thanks TK, I see what u mean. Your last sentence is sad but its true and sums up life as an adult, we tend to see the overall picture and when we do that, like u said, its a little less colorful. Wish I was still a kid sometimes 🙁

    2. Mac and I were saying the EXACT same thing Acemaster. The colors slowed this past week and what we have has become dull. And many branches have no leaves. We had a lot of all green leaves falling from our trees several weeks ago so I wonder if some that would have changed fell off prematurely due to the lack of rain? I remember some very recent falls when the colors were quite vibrant at peak and as you say we are not close to peak yet.

      how was the tournament????

        1. Yay for your company. Mac didn’t play well in his either. He always overthinks when it comes to something like that. But like you he also always has lots of fun

  2. dark clouds and some really gusty winds . the clouds came out of no where and they came from the northwest its like night time here.
cold front sending first round of showers through

    1. Matt was the same here. We had Gusty winds most of afternoon and still do but the sky got dark quickly. Rain was short lives but got heavy for a while Wind picking up more now though.

      1. I think we may escape the rain here tonight, but not tomorrow. Just a beautiful day down here, windy though. Could be in the low fifties after midnight.

  3. A very quick moving but potent T-Storm just moved through here. Very heavy rain for about 10 minutes with lots of thunder and some lightning. Seems to have passed.

  4. We saw some unbelievable color today along route 2. Starting in Harvard when we were apple picking. Took a ride up to the top of Wachusetts and it was beautiful. A bit windy but very mild. Then out to Deerfield at the Yankee Candle Factory. I thought it would be a lot more busy but it was quite manageable. Funny how the conversation of fall and childhood was brought up today. While we were in Harvard, the wind was blowing the leaves off the trees. It was like a yellow wind storm very reminiscent of what I remember from my child hood. That and getting chased by the cops but I digress.

    1. Sounds good. Can totally relate on the cops, LOL. Hey if I am correct, you bought a truck last year, is that right. What Did you buy.

    2. Hahahaha. I had to stop laughing before I could see to type. My dad was on the Belmont police force. My mom was involved in everything in town fromPTA to elections to being on school committe to president of woman’s republican club. If I so much as sneezed the entire town knew it and I had a line of cops waiting to greet me And although I never was really out of control I had a HUGE rebellious streak. And now I digress.

Coastal your trip sounds perfect and I am very surprised you didn’t run into tons of people. I love the Yankee candle factory.

And back to weather. It’s lovely and cool. Temp still in high 50s but dP is 49

    1. I’m leaning towards ford if I do it. Must be a four door. Do you like it, and happy with your choice. Do you have any extras with it. Sorry about all the questions. Thanks.

      1. Buy a Toyota. We have never had any of ours in for any more than typical such as brakes, etc. and we drive them for at least 6-7 years.

            1. John, the one I bought was the off road double door. I absolutely love it. I agree with Vicki, you can’t go wrong with a Toyota. Never had a problem with them. I have owned fords in the past and experienced issues. Ultimately go with something in the price range you set for yourself. If money is not an issue then buy a Tundra and we can race.

              1. If I am looking at numbers right, toyota seems higher than ford. Its 50/50 on the new truck, thanks.

  5. Back to weather – sort of since foliage is somewhat weather related. The poison ivy in my yard is a lovely bright red 😉

  6. Hello all,, even though we go into a chillier weather pattern over the next 5-7 days, towards the 2nd half of Oct it shows hints of warming back up high 60’s-70 🙂

  7. Sun will be gone soon but it was not a bad morning at all. Mostly sunny for a good part of it. Defied my “mostly cloudy” forecast in a week that I have been less than stellar on the forecast details. 😛

    1. I bet you nail the winter forcast. Just shoot high Tk, because we will be in for a cold and snowy one. Also to get back to you I believe the name is Dr Judith Cohen. He nailed last winter.

      1. Nailing one winter guarantees nothing about the next. I can’t tell you how many times I nailed a forecast and had all the confidence going into the next one only to have it completely obliterated.

I am probably not going to shoot that high. There are as many things I see that point away from it as point toward it at this point.

        1. And. Do you know the gentleman I am talking about. We won’t see a winter like last year for sometime.

          1. Judah Cohen. Yes.

Many of the factors he takes into account for the winter forecast have not taken place yet. Siberian snowcover and AO (which he himself states is one of the least-predictable indicies) have let to be determined for the Autumn season that has just started.

Rossby Wave energy also weighs heavily into his predictions, among other factors obviously.

            1. He has not announced his winter forecast yet. It will be out mid November. He is extremely knowledgeable. This is my last bit of information that I am waiting for. I am definitely not basing my forcast on what he will say. I strongly suspect he will be talking about some things I have been looking at, like the very good chance of a weak el Nino developing.

              1. I’m sure he will. He waits til mid November for the same reason I do. Last year, he just nailed it and I simply blew it. I did not give enough weight to the things I should have. I think I learned so we’ll see what I come up with in just over a month… 🙂

                1. Or we can say he was almost perfect. He admitted during his summer forcast in wich he put out in May, he did not see the very warm temps an so many. Every thing else he nailed. Now I do remember on his winter forcast last year he talked about this winter and saw it being more back to normal, somthing to do with the melting ice. Granted it was a year ago.

  8. Sunshine didnt last long this morning. Overcast now and feels quite chilly despite temps in the upper 50’s. Some light showers crossing the area within the next hour or so. Looks on radar like bulk of rain wont make it in here but I think southernmost sections get the steadiest rain yet short lived. Very little rain north and west of a Hartford to Worcester to Boston line.

  9. So much for the first batch of rain. Only .06 here. Looks like this week I may have to break down and finally turn on the heat :(.

    1. Dude I would wait as well. Even more if you heat with oil. I’m predicting a cold winter so the oil will be high. I have oil.

      1. I have oil also and we are still leaving windows open at night. My plan is typically no sooner than nov 1 but that has nothing to do with oil prices. We have always used the same amount of oil in this house – although we have doubled the size adding on. We are both frugal and don’t mind the cold

        1. I have oil heat, too! ARGH! Really getting tired of high oil prices. Thankfully, my husband and I like the house cool. Window still open while sleeping, but the opening is defiantely getting smaller 🙂

          1. :). Ours is getting smaller too.

Rain has arrived here in earnest. I’m on the porch reading and listening to it. I love nights like this.

            1. I have gas heat. Natural gas price are even lower this year than they were last winter. I wish all of you didn’t have to pay high oil prices. I did have electric heat in house we rented years ago and that was really high.

I can wait until Nov, but when the temp gets too low in my daughter’s room I have to switch it on. We will see what her temp is at this week, hopefully not too low and the heat can stay off :).

    1. Hahahaha. I posted above before I saw your comment JJ. We wait until Nov and I’d bet we haven’t had it on since march.

      1. My wife likes the heat, and l like the ac. I also have a window in the bedroom open. Off to bed, two am wakeup.

  10. Beautiful fall morning! Crisp and cold and the sun shining on our pine trees is glittering a golden color. Almost looks like a Christmas tree with glittering golden ornaments!

  11. *** FORECAST UPDATE MID AFTERNOON ***
    sorry for the delay!!

More clouds arrive today, unsettled Tuesday & Wednesday.
    Better late week…

    1. Thanks, TK. And I agree w/Vicki – enjoy the rest of the wknd. and don’t worry about an update.

  12. the peak color in the marsh has past mainly brwon and dull colors right now but in my back yard there are yellows and some reds. the other side of the street is still green with a few trees starting to change

  13. This Columbus Day weatherwise is the way I remember it as a kid with cool temps and foliage getting more and more colorful even here in the Boston area. In recent years, Columbus Day was more like Labor Day temp wise (too summerlike) and foliage wise (or lack thereof, green). Last Columbus Day temps were well into the 80’s IIRC.

As long as the cool temps continue with no snow and not too much warmth, this month should be quite enjoyable for me. 🙂

  14. My wife says we camped 3 seasons in about 72 hrs……Fri. Night and Saturday were late summer, first half of Sunday was autumnal and when the rain started late Sunday afternoon and the temp fell to 48F, early, early winter. 🙂
