Memories Of Summer

1:44AM

With the showers moving out to sea via Cape Cod, low level moisture will be trapped for the early morning hours, resulting in low clouds and fog, but this will be scoured out by a developing westerly breeze during the day Friday. Temperatures will rebound and it will feel a little like summer – an “Octoaster” so to speak. The balmy air will stick around for most of Saturday as well, though clouds will be more dominant and there is a shower risk as a cold front crosses the region. This front will stall just off the coast and low pressure will ride northward along it, bringing a chance of rain to eastern MA, RI, and southern NH, on Sunday afternoon and evening. By Columbus Day, Monday, this will be long gone and we’ll enjoy a breezy, cool, bright Autumn Day. Fair weather will hang on Tuesday as temperatures moderate slightly after a cold morning. A shower threat returns for Wednesday of next week when another frontal system arrives.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TODAY: Low clouds and foggy areas melt away to sunshine by noon. Highs 75-80. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear to partly cloudy. Lows 55-60. Wind SW 5-10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. A few passing showers mainly during the afternoon. Highs 65-70. Wind SW 10-20 MPH and gusty, shifting to NW.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Low 45-50. Wind N 5-10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Rain by mid afternoon. Highs 53-58. Wind NE 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 44. High 59.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 37. High 62.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. PM showers. Low 51. High 68.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 40. High 59.

  1. Thanks TK !

Happy Friday all and hope everyone has a nice long weekend. We’ll make the best of Sunday’s weather, however, today and Saturday’s warmth and mildness look quite enjoyable.

  2. Thanks TK,
How does the time of the rain on Sunday look? I have a packed day a head tomorrow with Apple Picking in Harvard, MA and then west to Yankee Candle Factory in Deerfield. I have to cut my grass this weekend and was planing on doing it Sunday Morning.

    1. sunday morning there might be scattered showers but the steady rain will be in the mid to late afternoon

  3. Thanks TK – the weekend looks ok and I love that Monday will have a fall feel. We have a memory day in celebration of my mom’s birthday with a picnic in a park in her memory (and that of others who made it possible) in the town where I grew up.

    1. What a wonderful idea, Vicki, that your family is having a memory day in celebration of your mother’s birthday! It’s so nice to see things like that with the family altogether. There’s a lot of love in your family, Vicki. Your mother will surely be looking down and smiling. You are very fortunate and I am glad the weather will be nice for you! 🙂

      1. Thanks rainshine. I am lucky indeed. How is your kitty? I keep forgetting her name………….tough getting old 🙂 Is it Lucy?

        1. Her name is Cara. And she is fine. Although we miss our other cat a lot, we have fallen in love with Cara. She is our new baby! 🙂 She craves attention. And unlike our other cats who would run away every time I take out the vacuum cleaner, Cara sits and watches very calmly. Every cat is different. I’m so glad we found her and she found us!

          1. Good heavens where did I get Lucy? My only excuse is I hadn’t had my coffee yet 🙂 You are right that all cats are different but it’s special when you find one that loves attention. I think it was meant to be that you found each other!

  4. Thanks, TK.

We will be seeing friends this wknd. and we might take a ride out towards the Berkshires. We went apple-picking 2 wks. ago. We might go again tomorrow before any rain comes. We usually go to Honey Pot Hill in Bolton. Hope everyone has a great wknd.!

    1. Rainshine my son was thinking of heading out to the Berkshires tomorrow. He was planning on staying overnight but said he couldn’t find a room ….. not surprised by that. I hope whatever you decide to do that you have fun!

      1. Thanks, we won’t be staying overnight. We probably will just make a day-trip out of it. Sorry about your son not finding a room. Maybe if he tried calling again today – maybe there would be a cancellation?

  5. What a day – it combines the best of two great seasons. It feels like early spring and with the leaves on the ground smells like fall. Wow

    1. Yes indeed…today is the best of both worlds. I do hope that the suburbs can get at least one good frost/freeze early next week to diminish the EEE threat.

  6. According to Brett Anderson’s latest blog, we will not be undergoing El Nino this upcoming winter after all. It now appears according to the models that we will be neutral instead.

So now what will “neutral” mean in terms of snow and/or cold??

    1. Not sure I would like the answer myself. Two things, you guys never buy into what he has to say. Second all signs point to a week El Nino.

      1. I don’t recall seeing any negative posts here about Brett Anderson’s blogs. You may be thinking about Henry Margusity who is also at AccuWeather.

      2. I don’t read Brett that often but he seems ok. Henry I disagree with more often and it tends to work in my favor, at least the last 2 years anyway. 🙂

  7. A couple things…

Today: I loved the look this morning when there was still thick fog but there were enough breaks in the clouds above for the sun to be shining into the fog. Feels like late Summer this afternoon!

Weekend: Showery in northern New England if you are leaf peeping up there that day. I think for southern areas the showers will be much lighter and less widespread as the cold front slides across the region in the afternoon. So even though there will be less sunshine than today, Saturday will still be a very nice day for October with above normal temperatures to boot. Sunday’s rain will probably be mainly in the mid afternoon to late evening and heaviest east of Worcester, but when I say “heaviest” I do not mean “heavy”. This rain event will probably be under 0.30 inch in most areas. Crisp, cool, & brisk Columbus Day – perfect October feeling day.

Next week: Rebounding temperatures Tuesday-Wednesday ahead of the next front which comes through late Wednesday with a shower threat. Dry weather for Thursday but winds picking up through Friday as a series of troughs try to transport some colder air in for at least a glancing blow late next week. Stay tuned later for timing and impact of cold and if there will be any threat of widespread frost.

Longer range: Warmer week after that probably in the cards as we reach mid October.

    1. TK…What do you think of Brett’s new analysis regarding a lack of El Nino and what would a “neutral” pattern bring in terms of snow opportunities?

      1. I’m not ready to jump completely on board but I do think this winter’s El Nino will not be the top factor in the weather.

Let me put it this way: My snow #’s will be bigger than what we had last winter (not hard to forecast that) but possibly lower than what is considered “normal”. Still need about 40 days before I’m ready to set it in stone.

        1. Thanks TK. I am thinking below normal snow as well, just haven’t come up with a specific number either. I am thinking, however, somewhere in the 30-something inch range.

          1. There are so many variables that go into this type of thing and even sometimes your best guess can get completely obliterated by what really goes on. That happened to me last winter. I’ve been doing this too long not to have that learned well, and still have to accept there is no such thing as a sure-bet forecast. It’s just impossible.

  8. Thanks TK. I loved the look of morning too. The sun shining through the fog with the changing leaves against the fog.

  9. Below is an article which discusses our chances of El Nino this winter based on the latest guidance Brett Anderson was referring to. Chances decrease as the winter goes on.

    http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-10-04/news/bal-wx-el-nino-chances-drop-to-5050-climate-forecasters-say-20121004_1_el-nino-climate-prediction-center-neutral-conditions

Looking back, we had our last “neutral” winter in 2007-2008. That winter Boston recorded above normal snowfall (51.2″) and interestingly, the winter that preceded it also had very little snow as (17″).

  10. The key to this winter will be what the AO and NAO do, moreso than whether we have neutral or weak El Nino. From what I have read so far, both should be trending more negative than positive this winter which would favor better chances for at least average snowfall. That being said, I don’t know how you can realistically predict AO and NAO this far out with any sense of accuracy. I’m still liking our chances for near to above normal snow this winter, if for any reason, because our last few snowless winters were each followed by above normal snows the following year.

Vicki – if you are collecting snow totals for this winter, can you mark me down for 50.3″?

  11. Good Morning All 🙂 Last weekend’s Family Reunion was a blast, although Mother Nature could have been a little kinder. Some much needed yard work is on the agenda for today, but I’m a little concerned about the showers heading our way. What time do they look like they’ll be entering the Boston area? Thanks.

    1. I don’t think it rains till Sunday afternoon. I could be wrong though. Enjoy the long weekend. We don’t have Monday off. It’s ok. Looking forward to a few days at the end of the month.

      1. Thanks John. What a beautiful day. It’s a shame I have to waste in on yard work. Oh well, will make the best of it 🙂

        1. My yard needs it as well, but come the weekends I am lazy because of all the extra hrs I work during the week.

    2. There is a shower threat today from about 4PM to 7PM but most of these should be light and short-lived.

    3. Hi shotime. It great to hear your family reunion went well. We have yard work too but did Halloween decorations instead. When do you wrap your hydrangeas in burlap ?
