The Week Ahead

10:02PM

SUMMARY…
The Summer preview dials itself back a bit this coming week. There will be several weather changes. The first is the replacement of the warm air Monday with cooler maritime air behind an advancing back-door cold front from northeast to southwest across southern NH and eastern MA. The leading edge of this may not make it all the way through RI and deeper into MA but the exact limit is not known and won’t be known until it takes place, so understand there may be a sharp temperature contrast in parts of the region Monday. The warm air makes another push back into the region from the southwest as the remains of Subtropical Storm Ana pass southeast of New England and a cold front moves in from the west. This day will hold a shower and thunderstorm threat. By Wednesday, the front will be moving offshore with drier and cooler air moving in, but enough cold air aloft will trigger the development of some diurnal cloudiness and perhaps a few showers. High pressure closer into the region should bring more dominant sun Thursday and Friday. The weekend is uncertain at this time and the weather will depend on the development and movement of some disturbances, so that part of the forecast comes with low confidence and is very subject to change.

      1. Hi Emily. I just saw this comment. I saw your pictures on FB. They are lovely. What a spectacular setting and very fun that Endicott hosts a mothers day event.

  1. Thanks TK !

Rainfall departures since March 1st …..

    Logan : -3.76 inches. Hartford : -2.51 inches.

    Providence : -3.58 inches. Worcester : -4.17 inches

    (From Taunton NWS Climate section)

    1. We definitely need some rain! Most of that snow that feel was the light fluffy variety. My yard is a dust bowl!

  2. Good morning. BD front not here yet. Sometime between 9AM and Noon.

    Buoy temperatures out there.

    51 at Boston Buoy and
    50 at Sellwagen Buoy

This is excellent and those temperatures are on the rise which means each subsequent
BD front or Sea breeze will be tempered more and more. 😀

Logan up to 73 at 8AM.

  3. 9AM Wind around the the North at Beverley. Front has just passed there.
    It is COMING.

      1. Hi, Vicki. Yes, totally enjoying the Spring warmth and greenery! It’s been very busy w/Marc and me – Marc finally, finally got his teeth removed and is wearing what I guess is called a bridge. Hard to get used to.

I have been glancing now and then on the blog – hope Mac is doing well and hope you and your family are enjoying the spring, too. Are you planning to stay down the South Shore again this summer for awhile?

        1. Great news, rainshine. And I so agree that anything new in the mouth is miserable to get used to.

Mac is holding his own. A bit tired of feeling weak. He has a CT on Friday which will hopefully show us the chemo is accomplishing something. He has had three rounds and has another next Monday. They are deciding whether to let his right lung collapse because the drain they placed in Feb isn’t performing as it should.

He is loving getting out onto the deck and enjoying the springtime air!! Thank you for asking 🙂

          1. All my best to Mac, Vicki. And wish him good luck on the CT on Fri.

Hope you had a great Mother’s Day.

The weather is really crazy – we should appreciate what we have here compared to other parts of the country. I am wondering how strong if we get any storms tomorrow. We will see.

  4. Front is by Reading as of 10AM. NE breeze, cooling down, and it smells like the ocean here. 🙂

      1. Neat local ob to show the shallowness of the cool air: We have NE wind in Reading while some fractocumulus clouds about 1500 feet up are moving west to east.

  5. BD front through Logan as of 11AM

    Max. Min.
    11 10:54 NE 20 10.00 Partly Cloudy FEW039 SCT044 69 59

Temperature has dropped at least 10 Degrees.

Wind NE at 20. That represents quite a front.

  6. Thin layer of stratus now over Reading. Overcast but sun is shining through it.

  7. Just came back from lunch. 69 at home. Driving in I could see the low stratus moving
in from the ocean, sliding underneath the cumulus which were moving slowly
    West to East. Pretty cool.

Pretty chilly here. Estimate about 64 or so.

    1. “Refreshing” to say the least.

I find it interesting how BD fronts change the airmass as soon as the pass through if not before while normal fronts from the west can take anywhere from 12-24 hours sometimes to really notice an airmass difference.

Expect the typical “six o’clock jump” later. Warm again tomorrow.

  8. Is it overcast or somthing in boston. My 4:50 flight has been delayed till 7:15 as there telling me low visibility.

    1. Back door cold front John, low clouds and a low ceiling has rolled in off of the ocean. I’m not at Logan, but I can tell you in eastern Marshfield, there’s fog as I look east and a low visibility.

    2. I think they’re pulling a fast one on you. Maybe where your plane is coming from is delayed due to low vis?

  9. Marginal Risk for thunderstorms tomorrow with latest SPC outlook. Here is the discussion.
    …PORTIONS OF NEW ENGLAND/SOUTHEAST NY…
ALTHOUGH SOME GUIDANCE VARIABILITY EXISTS REGARDING FRONTAL TIMING
    AND PRE-FRONTAL MIXING/DRYING…THE FRONT-PRECEDING AIR MASS SHOULD
STEADILY WARM/DESTABILIZE BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON PARTICULARLY ACROSS
PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN/COASTAL NEW ENGLAND. SUFFICIENT
NEAR/PRE-FRONTAL CONVERGENCE COULD ALLOW SOME STRONGER
UPDRAFTS/THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP. IF SUCH DEVELOPMENT OCCURS…A
    VERY STRONG DEEP-LAYER WEST/SOUTHWESTERLY WIND FIELD /EFFECTIVE
SHEAR 50+ KT/ COULD CONTRIBUTE TO A FEW FAST-MOVING SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF WIND DAMAGE. EVEN WITH SOME LINGERING
FORECAST UNCERTAINTIES…SCENARIO APPEARS TO WARRANT AN INTRODUCTION
OF MARGINAL-CALIBER SEVERE PROBABILITIES FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

  10. They said it was because of boston I was to fly out
Of Orlando at 4:50 now it’s 7:15 ugh!!!! My driver picking me up
Also said it was very cloudy in Boston

    1. It’s nice here at the office John, but I’m still a couple of miles from the
      Airport. Sorry about your delay.

      1. It might go at 6:50 now instead of 7:15 but
Still stinks. But I have no control over it.

            1. Son was near museum of science and said it is possible. Stuff was moving in when he left at 3:00ish

  11. At 19:55pm yesterday, I believe thats 3:55pm, it was 88F in Marshfield, with full blazing sunshine. Part of me wanted to close the windows and crank up the A/C.

At 19:55pm today, its 54F cloudy with fog and we are fluctuating btwn a 1/2 and 1 mile visibility. I have shut the windows and am enjoying the warmth coming from the stove and the oven while cooking.

  12. Brady has been suspended for 4 games , lost 2016 first round pick and team fined
    1million dollars . Crazy!!!!!

    1. Witch hunt. Makes me sick that with less than any proof they are doing this to bradys reputation. Revolting. Turns my stomach….that’s about as graphic as I can get here. But saying a lot of other things off line

  13. The bottom line is this:
To punish anything without complete proof is wrong.
The NFL already stated they didn’t prove anything.
The NFL has also shown that they care more about the pounds per square inch of footballs than they do about domestic violence committed by their players.
    Nice. Real nice.

I would have this stance if I was a huge fan of the Pats, if I hated the Pats, or didn’t give a crap either way.

    1. Well said Tk.
      TOTal WITCH HUNT!@@

      I hope Tom sues!!!@@

Caller tonight says forfeit 1st 4 games.
Stick it up nfl you know what

      1. Just read that some years back, Ben Roethlisberger was suspended the first 4 games. Steelers went 12-4 and to the Super Bowl.

I say the best response is to keep winning and end up in the Super Bowl again.

Also, evidently, Pittsburgh’s best player, Le’veon Bell is suspended to start next year. Combine that with what now looks like a helpful early season bye and the Jags at home, I think the Pats will be alright after those 4 games.

I’m much more irritated by the lost draft picks.

  14. The blog will be updated this evening.
Still having an interesting time figuring out the weekend…

  15. Ok, reviewing some STUFF. I don’t agree with Harvey’s forecast.

    More later…

      1. More adjusting of timing. I do think we end up on the cooler side of things this weekend.

  16. I find it interesting to see where the back door front made it to …. or, in this case, where it did not.

New Bedford is still 68F with a SW wind.

A large portion of Cape Cod has SW winds, such as at Hyannis, which is 65F. But continue a ways up rte 6 to PTown and its 50F with a light N wind.

Providence, RI is still 74F with a SW wind, and Springfield westward has SW winds and are 75F to 80F.

  17. Pretty impressive thunderstorms, for 9pm at night, out in western NY on Buffalo’s doorstep.

Also, looks like a decent cell in south central VT.

The cells in western NY state have some warnings on them, the one in VT does not.

    1. For sure. In running a loop for western NY, I almost thought a few cells were intensifying.

    2. I know eastern New England, at the surface, is cool and stable.

But, its 50F atop Mt Washington with plenty of warm air nearby, I wonder if there’s enough warmth/instability in the column to allow these cells to make a run into eastern New England by morning.

  18. Tom SPC has eastern SNE In the Marginal Risk for severe weather tomorrow.
I am not buying that and think any storms that do develop will be non severe.

  19. nice weather today but got a bit chill later

With the patriots. Brady will apeal and will get a game or two suspension. Jimmy G will win one or both of the games. He will surprise many.

Brady might not win or not even apeal. 4 games. Jimmy G surprises and wins at least 1 of the games. and the others are close.
Brady comes back and steam roles the colts and every other team then and after.

  20. A terrible situation just got worse – At least 4 people killed after magnitude-7.3 earthquake strikes Nepal

    1. Tuesday’s magnitude-7.3 earthquake was centered near the Chinese border between Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and Mt. Everest. It was followed closely by at least five aftershocks measuring from magnitude-5.6 to magnitude-6.3.
