The well-advertised period of cooler than average weather has arrived, and it will also be rather unsettled as well, especially the middle 3 days. We escape today dry, which is good news for many outdoor activities. Low pressure from the southwest provides a rainy Monday, and a follow up system from the west northwest brings more wet weather in later Tuesday into Wednesday. It will attempt to dry out by Thursday. Forecast details…

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 48-55. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Overcast. Periods of rain. Areas of fog. Lows 45-52. Wind NE 5-15 MPH, gusts 15-25 MPH, strongest in coastal areas.
TUESDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Highs 55-62. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain especially early. Lows from the upper 40s to lower 50s. Highs from the upper 50s to lower 60s.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Lows from the lower to middle 50s. Highs in the 60s.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 8-12)
Warmer with a risk of showers/thunderstorms June 8 as a cold front approaches then passes. Fair and dry June 9. A disturbance or front may trigger a shower at some point June 10. Fair and a little cooler June 11 then warming on June 12.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 13-17)

  1. Thank you, TK.

As I recall it was much like this many early Juneโ€™s. Certainly 2011 although Iโ€™m not sure it offered days as glorious as this. And definitely as far back as 1982.

  2. AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

Boston’s lowest recorded maximum temperature for any day in June is โ€ฆ

    A. 61 degrees
    B. 57 degrees
    C. 53 degrees
    D. 49 degrees

    Answer later today.

    1. Iโ€™ll go with D too and will be interested if they gave the year with the answer

As always, Longshot, thank you. These are fun.

          1. After I said D, I wondered if that was to sort of trick people. As you see…..didnโ€™t make a difference in my choice ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Meteorological spring temps in meteorological summer…interesting. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I can hardly wait what meteorological fall temps will be like.

  4. Good morning, everyone, and thanks, TK!

Longshot, I am going with B. I was half asleep, but I thought I heard a TV met say the record is in jeopardy tomorrow.

My son has lawn tickets for Kendrick Lamar Tuesday night at Xfinity.
Can anyone give me a rain outlook for Mansfield for the 8-11 pm Tuesday time frame?

    Thanks!

  5. Well, TK got it right about OCEAN CLOUDS!!!
IT is miserably CLOUDY here ruining an otherwise nice day.

  6. This month is the last for the early sunrises! ๐Ÿ™‚ After July 4th we slowly then more rapidly plunge back into the depths of morning darkness. ๐Ÿ™

    1. You don’t really notice it until mid August. And even then, it’s not quite to the plunge stage yet. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Why look forward so soon to something you don’t like? Enjoy now. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Oh I am very much enjoying it. But since I have to get to work so early and me being a morning person anyway, I tend to notice it much sooner, like by the end of July. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Thanks TK.

I believe rainfall amounts will generally disappoint the next few days. We’re in need of a good soaking. Tomorrow’s our best chance at it.

  8. As for the quiz, this is an easy one. Without looking anything up I can tell you it was 49 and it occurred on 2 consecutive days, June 1 & June 2 2015. That particular stretch of weather was absolutely fascinating to me. We will come “close” to doing that tomorrow but not quite. Their temp won’t be that cool at midnight tonight.

    1. I looked after OS said he was surprised. But that isnโ€™t what I found. Knowing me Iโ€™m looking in wrong place. The one I found was for June 3 same year.

      1. I believe it was still chilly on 6-3-2015 but I think Boston’s high was 55 or 56 that day. If I recall correctly, the first 5 days of the month remained below 60 at Boston. A steady warmup followed that for several days.

        1. Iโ€™m am positive Iโ€™m reading it wrong…would not doubt your memory.

I recall the year before being much like this. I suspect June is another trigger when we see the word and think warm summer.

          1. Yep. As I said…I searched for lowest high but just got lowest low. 2015 had an interesting start. I recall warmer weather into November.

  9. WxW .. I agree with you about rain amounts. I’m not sold on a whole lot of rain in the Tue & Wed period. Like we see in winter situations, the 2nd wave may end up shunted south by the circulation behind the Monday system, which itself may only produce about 6 hours of appreciable rain with mainly a soaking drizzle the rest of the time.

    1. Curious…

How does one tell there is going to be heavy drizzle as opposed to rain?
More low level moisture? not enough lifting? Seriously, I am most
      curious.

      1. Very saturated low levels. That can produce a very soaking drizzle. If there is not much going on at mid levels, there won’t be any big drops, a.k.a. rain.

  10. TK – How much rainfall for tomorrow? I thought I saw something like 1-2+ inches from one of the tv mets.

    1. If I had to guess, I’d say 2″ amounts, if any, would be very isolated and confined to SE Mass/Cape Cod. And even reaching 1″ may be the exception rather than the norm. There’s going to be a gap region between two areas of heavier rainfall, because this is a two-part system which isn’t phasing cleanly. I think that gap will probably fall over SNE. 12z HRDPS shows what I’m talking about:

  11. Any ideas if this summer is going to be like that one (somewhere around 1999-2002) where it was never really warm (it felt like 70 was the highest we ever reached, I remember wearing a lot of jeans that summer)? I donโ€™t think I can take that….

    1. No. It won’t be like that.

We get by the most persistent cool this coming week. From about mid June to mid July it’s alternating quick shots of heat with cool shots from Canada. From later July through mid September it’s more classic summer weather with lots of high pressure off the East Coast.

  12. An absolutely beautiful day in Windham and Bridgton, Maine. 75 and sunny and a great breeze. A perfect 10 in my book.

  13. Thanks, TK.

Welcome, Krista. By the way, as Philip pointed out, 2002 was a very hot summer. But, there was a cool summer in the early 2000s. It may have been 2003.

I was struck today by how cool it felt in spite of the sun. The 49F days in early June 2015 were overcast and dismal. While it wasn’t as cool today as it was in early June 2015 the fact that we had quite a bit of sun (and we’re nearing the closest tilt towards the sun) and it did NOT feel warm surprised me more than those days in June 2015.

We’ll see what summer brings. I’m sure we’ll have quite a bit of HHH. I was happy to be able to open my windows all day today, because doing so in July and August during those HHH days is futile.

    1. Hi Joshua. NIce to see you here tonight also.

I will head outside for a bit in a while. Suspect I may need to pull a light sweatshirt over my tee. It did feel great to have windows open. Even thought temps were not high, House was really wet from humidity so I kept AC on high just to dry it out.

Hope you had a great weekend

  14. Answer to AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

    A. 61 degrees
    B. 57 degrees
    C. 53 degrees
    D. 49 degrees

    The correct answer is D.

    1. Thank you Longshot. Good thing I rely on guessing and not looking online. I didnt even get that right today.

  15. 2001 was the very cool summer y’all were thinking of. We had a plethora of Canadian air masses and many days in the 70s with nights in the 50s and very dry air.
