DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)

We’re now at the middle day of what is for many a 3-day weekend, finishing up with Patriots Day aka Marathon Monday tomorrow. Before we get there, we have an unsettled Sunday to get through as a trough sends low pressure north of our region and drags a cold front from west to east through the area. This system will produce showery weather today, with most numerous showers moving southwest to northeast while the entire system slides to the east. Areas of fog and drizzle precede the showers in many locations. A temperature drop arrives at their conclusion. In fact it may chill off quickly enough so that some of the showers end mixed with sleet or wet snow in higher elevations of central MA and southwestern NH before the end of the day. Clearing behind the front progresses eastward far enough for some brightening of the sky, especially the further west you are, by later in the day. Will the sun sneak below a clearing line above the western horizon for a nice sunset? We will see about that, but if it happens, again further west has a better chance. Some clearing does take place tonight as colder air moves in, and this sets up a chilly and breezy Patriots Day, at which time upper level low pressure will be crossing the region. While the day is not set to be a wash-out by any stretch, a disturbance will bring lots of clouds and some scattered showers to the region especially during the afternoon. The air will be chilly enough so that the showers can mix with sleet and/or wet snow, especially in higher elevations inland. Either way, these are not a big deal. The gusty wind, limited sun, and chilly air will have some impact on runners in the marathon, probably even more on spectators standing on the sidelines of the route, and also at Fenway Park for the Red Sox game that kicks off in the late morning. But despite this, these events will go off without major weather-related issues – just one of the many varieties we can see here on this or any day in our part of the world. High pressure will build in with fair weather on Tuesday before the next low pressure disturbance brings clouds and a shower chance to the region for part of Wednesday. After this, at least some partial clearing is expected behind that system with dry weather on Thursday.

TODAY: Cloudy. Foggy areas and patchy drizzle morning. Showers arrive west to east morning-midday, including the chance of thunderstorms, tapering off western to central areas by day’s end while continuing in RI, eastern MA, and NH Seacoast. Showers may mix with sleet and/or wet snow in higher elevations of central MA and southwestern NH before ending. Highs 50-57 but starting to fall from west to east by late-day. Wind S up to 10 MPH shifts to west 5-15 MPH from west to east.

TONIGHT: Decreasing clouds. Lows 36-43. Wind W to NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts overnight.

MONDAY – PATRIOTS DAY: Sun and passing clouds morning. Mostly cloudy afternoon including the chance of a rain shower that can be mixed with sleet or snow in some locations. Highs 44-51. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Gradual clearing but clouds and snow showers are possible in far eastern MA for a while including some minor accumulation. Lows 28-35. Wind NW 5-15 MPH evening, diminishing overnight.

TUESDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 52-59. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 42-49. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Highs 55-62. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 41-48. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

      1. Great ! We were both out cold, exhausted.

        The low was 70F.

        Another hr of “warmth”.

There’s a wall of a NW wind charging across Chesapeake bay towards us. Special marine warning for it.

We’re moving slow today and that’s ok 🙂

      1. Thanks Tom. Lucky 1st guess that landed me 3 letters in position. It wasn’t too difficult from there. That 1st guess makes all the difference in the world. Yesterday, my first guess yielded ZILCH!!! Nothing like starting the game behind the 8-ball.

        1. Great 2!
5 here… I had the first 3 on first guess but so many words available from there… wasn’t until 4 guess that I got 1 more, then finished on 5

    1. Excellent!!

As Tom mentioned, this word is a low-score opportunity. On the other hand, I can see getting stuck having to do a lot of guessing.

      I got it in 3.

      1. When I was young, my two best friends were both born on April 20, but one year apart. I also have brothers in law on April 19 and April 20.

  1. Thanks, TK!

    Big sports day/weekend!

The Red Sox first pitch has been pushed back from 1:35 to 4:35 because of the rain.

  2. Thanks TK and thanks JJ and Vicki for the birthday wishes. We are in Great Stirrip Cay in the Bahamas today (stop at Norwegians island) on a 4 day cruise from Miami. Weather has been terrific all three days… sunny and mid 80s and not too humid.

  3. Thanks, TK.

Happy Birthday, Mark! Enjoy the Bahamas.

Also, happy belated birthdays to JJ and South Central.

I’m sure I’m forgetting someone. My apologies in advance.

Lots of birthdays to remember at WHW. I need to use an Excel spreadsheet.

Weather here is splendid. Very dry, sunny and 59F. Looks like a very stable weather pattern ahead, with sunny days and highs in the upper 50s/low 60s.

My daughter and I went to the garden center to get some planters and flowers for her balcony and common patio.

The Brits are sun worshippers, as you can imagine. They also sometimes underdress in this weather. When I left the apartment for a long walk, I noticed people in t-shirts, and it was 48F. It did warm up to 59F by 2pm. However, I wouldn’t call it t-shirt and shorts weather.

It’s kind of cool to see my favorite spring color – light green, the color of leaves in spring as they just come out – for an extended period of time this year. Trees have been out in full foliage for a while here. The leaves are light green. When I return to Boston I’ll see the light green leaves again.

Birds here are a bit duller than the ones we’re accustomed to. But there are still some really interesting one, including the Eurasian Jay and the Eurasian Blue Tit (in case you’re wondering, I’m not using a profane word; it’s what they call this bird). It’s not really like our Titmouse. I’d say it looks like a cross between a Blue Jay and an Eastern Bluebird. But it’s not as colorful or regal as our Blue Jay and Eastern Bluebird. And it’s not large at all.

Our Cardinals, Blue Jays, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Orioles, Goldfinches, Eastern Bluebirds, among others, are incredibly colorful. To many foreigners, they look like tropical birds.

  4. Yeah, Dave…
Heavy rain coming through now with lightning strikes in the Brockton area and history of strikes, primarily in south central Rhode Island.

  5. If one believes the CFS looks like a below normal temperatures for a good part of May. I’m sure we’ll have some warm days in-between the below normal temperatures. Ocean still gradually warming up maybe a few degrees below normal.

    1. Everything looks pretty cool well into May – maybe even June – maybe even July – maybe even forever! j/k especially on the last one. 😉

  6. It is possible that many major Boston / New England professional sports teams will be in the playoffs within calendar year 2026. I am including all men’s and women’s major league teams in my thinking.

Actually if you count all major league, minor league, and semi-pro teams, I would not be surprised if Boston had at least 15 teams.

  7. As much as it pained me, I just put the heat on.

    48 here

As of 3 pm, Pittsfield reporting light snow.

  8. Formidable line of t-storms with the front itself over eastern areas.

Got lucky out on the Tough Ruck 2026 route (which runs from the Concord Bridge into Bedford and Lexington (Battle Green), with a couple of loop backs, for a total of 26.2 miles.

There were a few downpours moving through, a couple rumbles of thunder just as the line was getting going, but most of it formed after it got by that area. I was out there for a bit in support of a friend who rucks annually and includes my dad’s name on her list of those she rucks in memory of.

The event is the same length as a marathon, but the participants often dress in uniform – military or first responder – although they are not required to do so. What they are required to do is carry a backpack or “ruck sack” that weighs minimum of 10 pounds (I think I’m right on the minimum but it’s possible I’m in error). I believe my friend’s is 22 pounds. She’s 50 years old (though you’d never know that if you met her) and she finishes the route like a person much younger. Very strong willed and physically strong human being. Anyway I make it a point to meet her along the route somewhere for a hug and a thank you and some words of encouragement. This year it was at Hartwell Ave where the Minuteman Bikeway crosses it. That bike path is utilized as part of the route.

    1. The minimums have to do with how much you weigh. There is some sort of minimum backpack weight depending on whether you anre over or under 150 or 160 pounds.

  9. Much of NNE is snowing! ❄️

WxWatcher was spot on. He predicted a few days ago that area would see accumulating snow. Even some snow tickling the route 2 corridor as well.

  10. That late-day clearing is right on schedule to the west, which is why some of us get to see the sun before it goes down.

I have it shining brightly here while a time lapse is recording from the 3rd floor window of the clearing process.

The final band of rain held back in a little bulge right over Boston .. Sox game went on right through it, but they probably wish it didn’t.

Because unless they are about to score 5 or more runs in the bottom of the 9th, this one is about to be over.

  11. HRRR decided a NORLUN feature will deliver 1 to 3 inches of snow from Boston to the South Shore Monday night.
