Monday April 20 2026 Forecast (8:05AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 20-24)

Today is the continuation of the weekend for many in our area, and a lot of people will be outside either running in or being a spectator of the Boston Marathon, or perhaps at Fenway Park for a daytime Red Sox game in which the first pitch is thrown prior to noon. The good news about the weather: Not a rainy day. The not-as-good news: It’s going to be breezy and quite chilly. However, many runners might count this as good news as the cool weather with a (mostly) tail wind will be beneficial for distance running. But even they are going to feel the chill coming out to the starting line this morning as we start the day with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s to middle 30s across the region. Before a lot of clouds arrive, courtesy upper level low pressure, there will be plenty of sun at first which will help take the initial chill out of the air, but as cumulus and stratocumulus clouds fill in the sky in response to a cold pool of air aloft, the lack of sun combined with a gusty breeze will make high temps in the middle 40s to lower 50s feel more like upper 30s to lower 40s. Additionally, with a disturbance passing by, the aforementioned clouds can produce a few showers of precipitation ranging from rain to sleet to graupel, even a little wet snow. These should not cause any significant issues, however, and most of the time will be just dry. Tonight, we clear out and the cold keeps hold as high pressure builds toward the region. Tuesday’s weather will be bright but still chilly, but this time with less wind, as that high sits over the region. During the middle and end of the week, the large scale weather pattern becoming blocked will feature the development and retrogression of an upper low off the coast to our east. The next weather disturbance moving our way Tuesday night and Wednesday will get close enough to deliver clouds and some light rain/mix/snow later Tuesday night and a few lingering rain showers Wednesday morning, and perhaps another shower round Wednesday evening, but the disturbance itself will be deflected to the southeast and eventually join the offshore party with the upper low as we get into Thursday and Friday. Slightly milder air arrives for Thursday before we cool down again for Friday with generally dry weather expected.

TODAY – PATRIOTS DAY: Abundant sun to start, then lots of clouds. Isolated afternoon showers of rain and/or sleet and/or graupel and/or wet snow. Highs 45-52. Wind W 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH.

TONIGHT: Lots of clouds early including mix or snow shower potential in eastern MA in the evening, followed by clearing. Lows 28-35. Wind NW 5-15 MPH evening, diminishing overnight.

TUESDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 45-52. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clouding up. Late evening or overnight light snow / mix potential especially west of I-95. Lows 33-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of a rain shower early. Highs 46-53. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of a rain shower evening. Lows 38-45. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sun / cloud mix. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 37-44. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 53-60. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 25-29)

Blocking pattern. Below normal temperatures. Upper level low pressure may deflect the April 25-26 weekend rain chance mostly southwest of the region but will keep an eye on it, so this period looks drier overall.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 30 – MAY 4)

Continued blocking indicated and while I favor below normal temperatures to continue the upper pattern may shift enough to allow more wet weather chances to evolve as we end April and get into early May.

  1. Thank you, TK

37 up from 29 and a frosty night

I said over a month ago that we should watch the 21st for snow since my hand surgery is tomorrow and it had already been postponed twice from snow. Looks as if Mother Nature tried. Just hope the marathon route doesn’t see anything that might make it slippery

    1. Sorry Tom. It was a tougher word than one might have expected.
I had nothing after 1 guess, then after 2nd guess, had 2 letters in position. Still couldn’t get it until guess #5. Never had more than the 2 letters in position. Only had more letters that were NOT in the word. Learned a new word in the process: plage
Never heard of that one before.

How’s everything down there in Virginia?

      1. Sunny !!

        Nice.

We took a ride down Pacific (?) Ave, right down Virginia Beach. Found a place or 2 to consider for outdoor dinner Wednesday night when it warms back up to near 80F.

Saw some waffle houses and let my wife know your suggestion. They also advertised in one of those guides and the pictures they had looked awful good !!

        1. IF it is the same as when we were there (admittedly long ago) you will NOT be disappointed!!

Sounds like a great time already. Were you able to tow your car along? or do you drive the camper? or rental car?
          Curious.

          Have a great time!!!

          1. Towed our camper.

Left at 4am and was across the new tapanzee bridge (Mario cuomo bridge) around 8:30am.

I think combined with the truck, 28 ft long. I usually stay in the right land or 2nd to right lane. If I ever have change lanes, it’s a patient process of keeping the blinker on for a bit and knock on wood, most drivers respond by leaving the large space open for me to change a lane.

The worst though is when a driver passes you to then cut across in front to take the exit. Because, that’s tough, because it takes a lot longer for me to slow down with the momentum of the trailer behind me. I don’t think a lot of drivers, who probably hadn’t pulled a large vehicle get this.

              1. Thanks, getting experienced anyway. My wife had her knee replaced oh, several years ago and she’s pain free, but driving a long distance is tough for her and so, it’s been at least 5 camping seasons I do the majority of the driving, so, gaining more and more experience with each trip.

  2. 50 Marathon Mondays ago, the temperature was about 50 degrees hotter along the route than it will be today.

    1. Same quick rise here.

      Now 55F after a low of 44F.

The wind is briefly back around to SW here ahead of an approaching reinforcing cool front.

Instability cumulus expected later, full sun now. The western horizon cleared last night to allow for a nice sunset after an otherwise cloudy afternoon.

      1. Looks like water temps still a little low for a swim.
I see water temp at buoy 64 Miles East of Virginia beach
is 53. That’s a bit chilly, BUT near the beach it should be a bit higher and any beaches at the far end of Chesapeake Bay just before the ocean, likely to be higher still.

Good luck if you venture in.

        1. I won’t but my wife will 🙂 all her family is from Nova Scotia, so, lol.

When we arrived Saturday, the park office had a chart on the wall with the tides, sunset and did list the water temp as 62F at the park’s beach. I’m willing to bet with the crazy NW winds yesterday and the cooler temps, it’s probably 55F or so, now.

          1. 62 is doable. Coldest I swam in was 53 on an August Day at Nauset Beach in Orleans!!!!! BRRRRRR My heart practically stopped and I was in my 30s then. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  3. I got this tidbit from SAK (no surprise). Today is Fenway Park’s 114th birthday. Happy Birthday to Fenway!

He’s there, of course, having attended every Patriots Day Red Sox game since 1987.

Hopefully today’s game result will be much better than yesterday. Even with the chilly air, the weather will still be better than yesterday’s for the game.

  4. Well, I think Boston’s record high for April 20 is safe today. 😉

    89 degrees set 3 times: 1927, 1941, 1976.

They’ll miss it by over 40 degrees. 😉

  5. My wife is able to do her job remotely and that’s why, as I wait, I am posting this morning.

Anyhow, I wonder if we have found a good spring and mid fall camping spot.

Just far enough south to be missing most of the instability cumulus today and we’ve jumped to 62F. It’s not chilly, it’s perfectly comfortable and downright hot in the sun.

That’s what I’m looking for in April ….. 60s and 70s and you just can’t get that in New England. And then again from 70s to 60s in October and 60s to 50s in November and understandably we’re probably 5-10F cooler than that.

Area seems nice and seems things to do, so, we’ll have to log this place in our mind for down the road. 🙂

But 48F to 50F on April 20th with the instability clouds arriving to cover the sun, no thanks 🙂

  6. Thank you TK!

Wordle: barely caught the train with a 6. Well done to all who made it. This one really got me and after I finally got it I was angry that it took that long.

  7. Wordle 3.

This is, in my mind, ideal marathon monday weather. For the runners. For me? I hate it. I feel like charlie brown going for the football – where the football is nice beautiful warm temperatures – and Lucy keeps yanking the football away as I’m about to kick it.

          1. Well, that’s kind of a given. 🙂
Boston is NO place to live in the SPRING. Absolutely the most dreadful season of the 4. Some Spring’s are OK, while most are not. That is according to my standards. Some may like it, but not I. I HATE SPRING around here!
            HATE IT!!!!!

            1. Strong agree here. As I’ve aged, every Spring I tell my wife that we have to get out of Massachusetts. Haha.

  8. Big Z just crossed the finish line. That guy runs an impressive time for a marathon.

Sox & Tigers tied at 3, bottom 6th.

    1. Sox win 8-6. 🙂

Meanwhile all their social media pages are contaminated with hate for the team and how much they suck. Why are they watching / caring? If you hate the team, choose another one to root for and don’t let the door hit ya…

      1. But different texture. But yes graupel. A week ish ago it collected and looked like tiny foam balls. Definitely mixed with rain.

    1. And I post the same replies every year about how much I love it.

Even when I go to the cemetery to visit my mom, dad, and brother, there’s a beautiful tree in bloom right next to where they rest.

It’s a reminder that life goes on and their memory stays with me, and that the weather is just that – the weather. It doesn’t really matter that much.

I just can’t be bothered to dislike any day that I get to continue my life because the temperature isn’t some definition of perfect. 😉

  9. I think one of the funnier things about the complaining this year…

March in Boston: 3.1 degrees ABOVE normal.
April to-date in Boston: 2.9 degrees ABOVE normal.
Meteorological spring to-date in Boston: 3F WARMER than the long term average.

Yes folks, this spring is mild so far. And also dry, about 1.50 inch below the running average to-date.

    So, what’s the problem?
