    1. Sigh. I would be curious as to the Covid-19 wastewater levels in DC metro area, if there is any data at all.

      Joshua?

    1. There has been so much pushback with remote from parents especially. Top school officials as well. I heard just yesterday that Covid cases will be treated as “snow days” from now on, whatever that means.

      1. I’ve probably mentioned this a gazillion times on this and the other blog but I have never understood why southern schools start in August in the first place.

They really should start the first full week in October or at least mid-September. Jmo.

        1. I believe it has to do with kids getting out early spring to help with farming. But I figure it is the least of the problems with our school system so it it works then why not.

        2. It’s not only the south. The South, Midwest and upper Midwest as well as west start school in August some even late July. The northeast and northwest are the only exception’s I believe.

            1. There are a lot of things in this country that are regional, and the later starting times are not exactly a minority, %-wise. It’s the second largest group.

Do you have a stake in MA schools as you seem very concerned for a NH resident about what we do here? 😉

      2. Pushback is fine for only virtual. I understand that some parents want their kids in school. To push back for a virtual option is an perfect example of me-ism in this country. There are excellent home school systems. I know. All four of my home schooled grandkids went through last year without one single interruption and ended up ahead of their peers in the majority of subjects and even in the others. And three of the four have IEPs.

Other than the very first few months with Covid, I have never suggested schools be all remote. Schools have paid for alternative education for kids in MA as long as I can remember. No reason not to pay for home schooling.

Am I missing something other than the fact DESE is out to lunch.

        1. Glad that your grandkids did well virtually Vicki but from what I have read in newspaper and online articles as well as tv news segments since this pandemic started, a number of students performed considerably worse with virtual learning. I have read too many instances where “Johnny” went from an A/B student to a C/D one once the pandemic began, not to mention developing behavioral issues that never occurred before. One common theme is that they fell behind quickly and never caught up. I would be curious on stats of in person vs. remote in general. Is the media making it worse than it actually is?

          1. I’m not sure anyone would tell you that as a whole last year was a horrible struggle for kids in school. Teachers also.

There was no consistency in learning. Schools that tried to create consistency by having kids who were Ill or quarantined were forbidden to offer remote just to keep them on track.

Either way I cannot repeat strongly enough that I’m not advocating for just remote learning. There should be two options for public school…..home and in school….both covered financially.

I’d love to hear a reason that doesn’t make far more sense than what we had.

          2. I think unfortunately the wealthiest families don’t not mind remote as they often have parents that can stay home, and actually enjoy them being home. I mean what kid or parent that can work from home and have kids remote would not do that. I’m concerned for the kids that are remote have issues later in life. I guess we will know a number of years down the road. Just a thought.

            1. Olive. I’m being careful to stress that I am not at any point in time suggesting that everyone go remote. It absolutely should be an option.

As far as wealthy, my girls chose to stay home to raise their kids. One works part time but around school hours. Neither is wealthy by any stretch of the imagination

I worked full time from home the entire time My three were growing up. I would have opted for home schooling if covid hit back then. In all three cases, paying for home schooling options is unfair

              1. Note also that I am not advocating for remote involving teachers etc. I’m advocating for home school costs to be covered.

Example. My 13 yr old granddaughter wants to go to Norfolk Agricultural high school. Her town is responsible for all Cost including transportation

MA has been responsible for this as long as I remember as it should be. If the town doesn’t offer it, it has to cover cost.

                1. I answered that. In this state there are alternatives for kids whose local schools do not offer what they need. Special services such as those with disabilities. Vocational, or IMO a safe school. No one can possibly disagree that schools are not safe.

Also each school has Esser funds due to Covid.
