What A Day!

Not most importantly, but firstly, my sincere apologies to all for both getting the forecast quite wrong today and then not being around to explain why and correct it! I trust that most of you found good coverage both on the blog via the users, and on local TV.

I will post a new forecast later tonight, but for now we’ll just sit and let the final cluster of storms move through.

Props to Charlie for your good forecast and JJ for excellent updates, and to many others. I have not had time to read through all of them yet. I will let you all continue to post here for this evening, and I’ll be back to chime in later, and then update.

Good news: Quiet weather ahead for a few days!

Hope you all are safe tonight. 🙂

Many Areas May Be Dry For A Week

5:00PM

No. Not everyone is going to get severe storms tomorrow. I’m betting very few, if any areas, see it. Thunderstorms? Sure, they are possible. Big ones? Maybe…if you live many miles north & west of Boston. I just don’t feel that the Boston area is going to see much of anything out of this storm threat for Wednesday. Not unstable enough. Not the right wind direction long enough. Not cold enough above us at the right time. Too many things are not coming together so I’m going to downplay it. Either way, keep an eye out tomorrow, in case, because Mother Nature has the final say, and she likes surprises.

Otherwise, I think the overall pattern is generally a dry one with variable temperatures during the next 5 to 7 days. A few disturbances may pass by, with brief shower threats here and there. But I just don’t see any widespread rain right now. Of course, if things start to look different, I’ll let you know. 🙂 For now, onto the forecast for the Boston area and its nearby neighbors…

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low 55 to 60. Wind SE up to 10 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers and thunderstorms between 2PM and 8PM from northwest to southeast – the greatest chance of heavier thunderstorms being west and north of Route 495 through 5PM with showers and storms likely to weaken as they enter Metro Boston late day. Some areas may not see any showers or storms at all. High 80 to 85 except 70s immediate shoreline.  Wind S to SW 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy to mostly clear. Low 52 to 57. Wind NW 10 to 15 mph.

THURSDAY: Mostly to partly sunny (fair weather clouds may become abundant in the afternoon). High 73 to 78. Wind W 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Variably to partly cloudy. Low 50 to 55. Wind NW 10 to 20 mph and gusty.

FRIDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. High 68 to 73. Wind NW to N 10 to 20 mph.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 56. High 78.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms in the morning, then mostly sunny. Low 59. High 77.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 79.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 59. High 81.

Memorial Day & The Week Ahead

3:00AM

It’s the feel of summer for the “unofficial” start of summer this Memorial Day, but all may not be quiet, because as a cold front moves into the region, bumping into a very warm airmass in place, some thunderstorms are likely to be set off today. The good news is that widespread severe weather is not likely. However, be on the look-out for darkening skies and passing storms, any of which may produce strong winds, hail, downpours, and of course, dangerous lightning.

We get a break Tuesday as high pressure builds in. A cooler, but pleasant day is expected. If clouds are around to start it, expect the sun to win out.

Wednesday, another quick change will take place.  A warm front will pass in the early hours, returning warm and humid air to the region, which will then be wrung out by another cold front, producing showers and thunderstorms once again.

As we get to the second half of the week, high pressure should dominate at the surface and aloft, with fine weather for at least a few days.

Details for the Boston area…

TODAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Any storms may produce brief downpours and gusty winds. High 85 to 90. Wind SW 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts, but variable and possibly stronger in any thunderstorms.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 55 to 60. Wind N 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. High 65 to 70 coast ranging to 74 to 79 well inland. Wind E 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Low 60 to 65. Wind SE 5 to 15 mph shifting to SW.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon. High 82 to 87. Wind SW 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 60. High 82.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 77.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 58. High 80.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 62. High 82.

Memorial Day Weekend!

9:00AM

This is what happens when you are not home enough to update as much as you want… A holiday weekend sneaks up on you. But here I am, on this fine Saturday morning, before being out again most of the weekend. Hey at least most of it’s fun stuff! 🙂

Let’s skip the technical discussion and just get right to the forecast for the Boston area, and we’ll talk more about upcoming patterns in a longer discussion later this weekend. 🙂

Warmer Pattern

A warmer pattern is underway, which will last through the Memorial Day Weekend. The Week Ahead

 9:30PM

OVERVIEW…

Tonight, ladies and gentleman, I’ll be venturing further out on the limb than usual, and forecasting out 9 days, taking us not all the way through the Memorial Day Weekend, but through the final day of May. Keep in mind, that as we get out in time, forecast confidence lessens, but this will be the best shot I can give it for now, so please return for updates!

SYNOPSIS…

A warm front will push slowly eastward across New England Monday, with cloudy and damp weather. A cold front will approach on Tuesday, but ahead of it we will see a taste of summer weather. Showers/thunderstorms will accompany the front which will pass through the region Tuesday night. Expect a wave of low pressure to slow the departure of this front and produce some rain early Wednesday. An area of high pressure is expected to bring drier weather to the region on Thursday. Another front will bring another chance of showers and thunderstorms to the area on Friday. Memorial Day Weekend should find the region in the middle of a transition to a new weather pattern. Forecast models vary, with some showing a front stuck in the vicinity with periods of showers. Another projection is building a ridge of high pressure off the US East Coast, keeping shower activity well to the west and bringing a more summery weather pattern in. I’m torn at the moment as to how this is going to play out, so for now I am going with a slow transition from scenario 1 (the showery one) to scenario 2 (the summery one), as we go through the holiday weekend into the final days of May.

Mid-Weekend Update

7:30PM

Greetings readers! Hope you are all enjoying the weekend. Today was nicer than I had forecast, but no complaints, right? I’d rather be wrong that way than have forecast nice weather for it only to turn out bad.

Awesome bank of fog/stratus rolling westward across Metro Boston at this time (Saturday evening 7:20PM as I write this). This is a signal of a cloudy/cool Sunday ahead. But I do not expect any rain. Warmer times are ahead again for part of next week. Details to come, including a look into Memorial Day Weekend on tomorrow’s blog. But for now, here’s my best ideas for the next several days for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Becoming cloudy. Areas of fog. Low 45 to 50. Wind E up to 10 mph.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog near the coast. High 50 to 55 coast, 55 to 60 inland. Wind E up to 10 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Low 45 to 50. Wind SE up to 10 mph.

In The Dank Tank

8:00PM

No need to go into a discussion about what you already know. We’re stuck in the gloom. There are signs of a lessening of this, but not a complete break of the pattern. In fact, we could tank again for a few days next week, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves a bit.

Here’s an updated forecast for the Boston area…
