Memorial Day & The Week Ahead

3:00AM

It’s the feel of summer for the “unofficial” start of summer this Memorial Day, but all may not be quiet, because as a cold front moves into the region, bumping into a very warm airmass in place, some thunderstorms are likely to be set off today. The good news is that widespread severe weather is not likely. However, be on the look-out for darkening skies and passing storms, any of which may produce strong winds, hail, downpours, and of course, dangerous lightning.

We get a break Tuesday as high pressure builds in. A cooler, but pleasant day is expected. If clouds are around to start it, expect the sun to win out.

Wednesday, another quick change will take place.  A warm front will pass in the early hours, returning warm and humid air to the region, which will then be wrung out by another cold front, producing showers and thunderstorms once again.

As we get to the second half of the week, high pressure should dominate at the surface and aloft, with fine weather for at least a few days.

Details for the Boston area…

  1. Happy Memorial Day to everyone and Thank You TK! 3:00 AM???? Wow you were either up late or early!!

Do you know if that line of storms in western MA will hold together? Trying to decide if the 11:00 parade in Belmont is worth the trip or whether the storms will arrive at just about parade time.

  2. The line is weakning big time compared to what is what back in the Northern NJ and the Hudson River Valley. In fact there were a couple severe thunderstorm warnings for those areas early this morning. This is all part of the same system that produced severe weather yesterday in the Midwest. As for thunderstorms I would not rule out embedded thunder with this so I am going with a 1 on the 1-4 scale meaning should thunder fire it will remain below severe levels. The system is moving fast so I would say any cookouts this afternoon should be good to go but keep an eye to the sky in case a thunderstorm were to pop up.
As for Wednesday I am going with a 2 which is MODERATE since I think will have isolated severe weather across parts of SNE especially across the interior.
Happy Memorial Day everyone and thanks to all the men and women who serve our country both past and present!!!

    1. Thanks JJ – I was watching it weaken and either shrink or move more south. That sadly will not help parades in southern MA but just may drop below the one we are going to. We’ll see. Enjoy your memorial day.

  3. Thanks for answering Vicki’s question JJ! I was at work for a while today, earning double pay. Attended a service at the local cemetary this morning with my son (which we do every year), at which time there were a few sprinkles on the northern edge of the weakening MCS passing to my south.

The storm threat is indeed over for the day, I believe.
