Disturbance passes today with some cloudiness and a slight risk of brief light rain in a few areas. High pressure builds Tuesday and Wednesday and in comes the warm air, especially Wednesday, but as previously discussed, coastal areas and Cape Cod will be cooler than the majority of the region on both days. A cold front drops through the region Thursday and then provides the avenue for a wave of low pressure. This results in a cooling trend for the end of the week and some wet weather at least part of Thursday into early Friday (timing still not completely certain).
TODAY: Sunshine gives way to lots of clouds. Slight chance of brief light rain but mainly rain-free. Highs upper 40s to lower 50s, except lower to middle 40s southern coastal areas especially Cape Cod.

A large and deepening storm passes well south of New England today and is only close enough to put some northern-fringe snow over Cape Cod and the Islands with minor accumulation there. Wind will be a bigger issue in that area. In addition, an ocean flow will put some snow showers into eastern coastal areas of NH an MA at times, with minor accumulation also possible there in some locations. A small high pressure area brings fair weather but not quite as cold Saturday, and a weakening low pressure combines with a northeasterly air flow for more cloudiness and maybe a few snow showers Sunday. High pressure building over the region both at the surface and aloft will ignite a significant warm up early next week.

Today will be a good example of the changing pattern as just within the 12 hours starting with the time of this post we’ll go from very mild and wet weather to windy, clear, and cold that feels like mid Winter, all thanks to a low pressure area moving across southeastern Canada and dragging a strong cold front through the region. The cold that arrives to end the day will be around for a couple days, and as stated yesterday, we’ll have fair weather due to high pressure Thursday and a chance of snow due to low pressure passing south of the region Friday. It still remains to be seen just how important (or unimportant) the snow event will be as this will depend on the exact track of the low pressure center. Still leaning toward a less important event but a greater risk of accumulating snow in southern and some eastern areas of southern New England. More to come on this. High pressure brings fair weather Saturday. A weakening low pressure area and a northeast flow combine to bring more cloudiness and possibly a few mix/snow showers Sunday.

March has arrived! And our weather pattern is…pretty much the same, quick-moving systems and lots of change. Timing is always an issue in a pattern like this, and the madness that can be the March weather pattern will be in full swing during the first days of the month, without question. This starts with a windy/colder morning today compared to the relative warmth of the final day of February under 24 hours prior. A warm front moving in tonight will send cloudiness in advance of itself late today then some precipitation, starting as snow/sleet/freezing rain in some interior areas before rain in all locations as the temperature goes up overnight. We won’t be in the warm air mass very long though, as the low pressure parenting it is also parenting its sibling cold front, which will charge through the region during the middle of the day Wednesday with a final band of rain, followed by clearing and falling temperatures. This will be a significant punch of cold air that will be with us through late week. High pressure will bring fair weather Thursday. Low pressure passing to the south on Friday brings a risk of snow. Though the bulk of this system is likely to pass south of the region, it will be a close enough pass to watch closely as a northward shift would bring more significant snow into the region.

A pair of cold fronts will come through the region, one midday today and one about midnight tonight. The final (extra) day of February will be quite mild, but colder air will arrive overnight to start March on a chilly note. Quick-moving systems mean that a warm front will approach during Tuesday with clouds rolling in. Its parent low will pass northwest of southern New England early Wednesday with a round of rain showers at some point Wednesday with a cold front. High pressure builds in with fair and chilly weather Thursday. Low pressure develops and moves south of the region by Friday, and with cold air in place we’ll have to watch for some mix/snow, though it’s a little early to determine how productive this system will be here in southern New England. It is even still possible this system is further south and misses most of if not all of the region.

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 2)…
High pressure retreats today but leaves lingering cold from the polar air mass that it delivered yesterday. A warm front arrives tonight with cloudiness but no precipitation, and brings a milder air mass in from the west for Sunday. Its parent low will travel eastward passing north of southern New England Monday while dragging a cold front through, but this particular front does not have much cold air behind it as it has traveled over a milder portion of the US and is not coming from colder sources further north. Eventually somewhat cooler air will sink down from Canada and this boundary will remain fairly close once it passes, coming back up into the region as a wavy frontal system by Tuesday and Wednesday, with more cloudiness and eventually some wet weather. At the tail end of this unsettled weather, there may be a risk of rain ending as snow as colder air arrives more quickly, but this is several days away and uncertain.

The weather’s gotten into the mood to be harder to forecast, but we like a challenge. After a nearly no-show on the snow portion part 1 of the storm system, the second part of it won’t be able to pull such a trick, as we’ll see periods of rain/drizzle today and that area of heavier rain coming through in the early morning hours of Thursday, and a trailing trough bringing a few more rain/mix showers Thursday evening and night. Still expecting drier and colder weather by Friday and a chilly start and milder finish to the coming weekend as additional cold air remains locked up in Canada.

Here comes the 2-part storm system with low pressure #1 delivering mix/snow to ice/rain from late today through tonight and low pressure #2 bringing a round of heavier rain and wind later Wednesday to early Thursday. A trailing trough from low #2 will bring a few additional showers of rain/mix late Thursday. We start out cold and this will be the reason for the frozen precipitation associated with low #1, but much milder air aloft and at the surface will take over as #1 passes and will be in place for #2. Drier and cooler weather is expected for the end of the week.
TODAY: Becoming cloudy. Snow/mix developing mid to late afternoon RI and southern MA, may start as rain South Coast and Cape Cod/Islands. Highs in the 30s. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

Currently looks like the coldest air that was previously expected for February 28 will stay to the north and the day will be fair and seasonable. System from the west brings a chance of snow/mix/rain February 29. Fair and colder March 1-2. Storm threat March 3 but not sure on timing or any precipitation type this far in advance.

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 22-26)…
High pressure provides dry and seasonably chilly weather today. A complex storm system in 2 parts brings unsettled weather late Tuesday through early Thursday. An initial wave of low pressure will lift northward along the East Coast and run into lingering cold air with snow/mix overspreading southern New England during Tuesday evening before changing to rain at night as it warms up both surface and aloft. A frontal boundary left behind as this wave departs will keep damp to wet weather going on Wednesday then more rain will be generated by a second storm’s warm front. This larger system will pass west of New England and drag its cold front through by early Thursday with a band of heavier rain but very mild air just ahead of the front. By late Thursday and Friday it will turn somewhat colder, with a few rain showers around Thursday evening as a final trough of low pressure comes through, then dry weather Friday.
