Sunday December 14 2025 Forecast (8:24AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 14-18)

Low pressure passing by to our south today will begin to intensify but will start to pull away while doing so. This gives the region a glancing blow resulting in a light to borderline moderate snowfall, with highest accumulation of snow from Plymouth County MA to northern RI, and southward from there, although amounts may be slightly lower than the maximum totals due to some initial mixing with rain on Outer Cape Cod and Nantucket. We also have to watch for a wrap-around batch of snow showers, somewhat enhanced by the ocean, on the back side of the departing system. This can prolong the snow until later Sunday for eastern coastal areas. The timing is just a little slower for the ending, resulting in a slower start to the clearing trend following the storm. But it will clear out during Sunday night as a reinforcing shot of cold air arrives. This cold, along with a gusty wind, will make Monday a bit harsh. A disturbance coming quickly our way from the west northwest may bring a few snow showers to the region Monday night. The Tuesday through Thursday period will feature moderating temperatures and generally dry weather, although later on Thursday we’ll see increasing clouds and by night there can be some wet weather as we see a spike of warmer air arriving at that time, propelled our way by low pressure cutting through the Great Lakes.

TODAY: Overcast with snow through midday gradually tapering off from west to east thereafter – accumulations generally 1/2 to 2 inches except 2 to as much as 4 inches possible from the MA South Shore to South Coast regions. Highs 27-34, mildest Outer Cape Cod / Nantucket. Wind NE to N up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Lingering clouds and possible early snow showers eastern areas, otherwise clearing west to east. Lows 12-19. Wind N to NW increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts. Wind chill falls below 10.

MONDAY: Sunny start, then clouds return later. Highs 23-30. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusts 25-35 MPH. Wind chill below 20 at times.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Snow showers likely with some minor accumulation expected. Lows 13-20. Wind NW diminishing to under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 31-38. Wind WNW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 15-22. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 36-43. Wind WSW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows Lows 25-32. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy. Highs 44-51. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 19-23)

Great Lakes cutter low pressure sends a brief surge of warmer air in right at the start of the period and a strong cold front trailing from the low brings a band of rain before cold air returns with lots of wind. December 20-21 weekend looks mostly tranquil and dry with seasonably chilly weather. A little more up-and-down temp swinging with a minor system bring rain/snow shower chance early next week – more precise timing TBD. The winter solstice occurs at 10:03 a.m. EST on December 21.

DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 24-28)

The up-and-down temperature pattern continues but with a leaning toward the colder side overall. An additional episode or two of precipitation possible but early indications for no major storminess to occur, more overrunning type events with our region on the colder side of the boundary between Canadian cold and warmth to the south. This would favor frozen over liquid precipitation for our area.

  1. Thank you TK! A pretty winter landscape here this morning as I get ready for church. Looking forward to taking a ride later to see Christmas lights covered with snow. Love that look!

Wordle: 5 (tough for me also Vicki but glad to have good company)

    1. Sounds wonderful Sue. I know you’ll enjoy every minute. And wow. I thought I’d be alone with the five. You are great company

I attend church virtually. There are usually about 11 of us who moved away but love the church and minister. I suspect there will be more than the regulars attending online today

  2. Good morning and thank you TK

    32 here

    Ocean: 47

    It is actually SNOWIG!!!

Was not snowing at 1 AM. Was snowing around 6 AM, so it started somewhere in there. BTW by watching the radar could tell it was snowing aloft from about 6 PM onwards. EVEN when there were solid green echoes, still nothing. Just shows how much dry air the snow was fighting.

6z suite seemed to want to up the Ante and showed the coastal back lash TK was discussing. NWS has 2 inches for Boston. We shall see what the final total is. Looks like about 1/2 inch so far.
Snowing lightly, but a decent light snow that looks oh so festive.

    Wordle: 6
Wasn’t sure I would get this one. Totally lost. Watch someone come in with 2 or perhaps 3. NOT me, that’s for sure. 1st 2 guesses, zilch. NOTHING at all, except 10 letters not in the word.

        1. With zilch the 1st 2, I really got it 4. Can we look at it that way??? I know, it is NO, but it makes ne feel better.

      1. 3, wow!!!!

Don’t want to clear snow during Patriots game. 1/2 time maybe.

GO Patriots!!! Should be a most interesting game and a true test for Drake Maye. Honestly, this one could go either way.

        1. Yes, I mentioned it above.
THE LIGHT echoes, I understood, but when I saw solid green overhead in the 11 PM hour, I thought for sure it would snowing, nope. I thought I saw a lonely flake or 2, but then nothing, so who knows.

  3. NOT for nothing, but the radar looks SICK up this way. Not going to accumulate much more IF it stays like this. AND I don’t like the current movement of the echoes, it’s like the back end is already collapsing east and south.
Maybe something will bubble up later or move back in from the ocean, but NOT looking good now.

  4. Thanks TK.

FINALLY some snow for Christmas, as it should be around here as well as other northern tier states. ❄️ 🙂

    1. Today’s snow is not going to stay on the ground until Christmas, which is still 11 days away.

Friday’s high temp will be near 50. It’s a brief warm-up, but with a healthy southerly wind and a rain band moving through. If Boston has snow in the ground for Christmas, it will fall after December 19.

  5. Thanks TK !

Wordle: 4. Don’t know how, I had 0 letters after 2 guesses, but, netted 3 in the correct spot on the 3rd guess.

About 3/4 to 1 inch here.

I am interested in this wrap around piece and my eye is watching some splotchy, non fuzzy echoes out over the ocean well to our north, as maybe the infancy of this band that can swipe east coastal areas.

  6. I’m in full agreement with you, TK on your long range forecast.

Temp contrast nearby and with arctic, dense air, the models from this far out are underestimating its ability to be further south, at least in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

Opportunity for some mixed, mostly frozen overrunning, precip events near or after Christmas.

We haven’t had much arctic air around or nearby the previous 2 winters. Little different this year.

    1. This early-season it’s already been a close neighbor, and I suspect it will often be knocking on the door to borrow sugar or a cup of milk…

  7. Thanks, TK.

It looks like weather will be having some mood swings over the next 10 days. Oscillation is an understatement. We could go from 50F one day to 30F the next and back to 50F or thereabouts the next. Certainly not unprecedented, but it is rather volatile.

    1. Yes, not even remotely in the universe of “unprecedented”, which is currently the most over-used word in weather by media, and most of the time it’s incorrectly used. The same sources also need to educate themselves on what a “one in 1000 year event” means, because that’s used incorrectly almost across the board on a routine basis.

Yes, we’ll be having some swings, which is not unusual in the least for our weather here in the northeastern US.

I could cite some numerous examples from weather logs I took myself as a kid.

I mean just the month of January 1978 was like the perfect model of volatility.

      1. I agree. The current misuse of those and other phrases is unprecedented! 🙂

I recently cringed when an on-air met said something like, “The air temperature will be 40 F, but when you factor in the wind it feels like half of that.” That would be -210 F. As a result, I definitely overdressed when I went out to pick up the mail.

        1. “Feels like” is a term that can just go away.

Wind chill is fine as a term, and used when needed, not over-used.

Information saturation is not helpful. This is why I keep my blog simple.

        2. Did that person actually say -210F??? or was that in a graphic and was a stupid-ass typo????
If the person said it, that person should be FIRED!!!!

btw, I am NOT impressed with our weekend mets. Clearly sub-par for the most part.

          1. The -210 F is my calculation of what it means to have a temperature that’s half of 40 F. For “half” to make sense, you have to use a linear temperature scale like Kelvin (K):
            40F = 278K
            278K / 2 = 139K
            139K = -210F

            1. I know that they meant that 20 F is half of 40 F, but it isn’t. If you tried the same thing with Celsius you would get a different wrong number.

              1. Yes it’s the completely wrong approach to that.

There’s a lot of that in media now when they are told to “dress things up”. I personally think it’s stressing them out.

The one that bothers me the most is the “if this was snow it would be xx inches” … No. No. No. NO. It does NOT work like that.

I can’t begin to count the times I have had to correct people on that one. And yes I will correct it every time I see it.

The fundamental rule of that is that warm air holds much more moisture than cold air, and it’s routinely thrown out as a factor which immediately makes whatever come after that incorrect.

It was very refreshing to see Petey B. actually take the time to explain that to his viewers recently. Ah! Education! So helpful. 🙂

  8. Reminder: The event is underway. Looking at the short range high res models for snow totals, you now have to take into account the simulations are starting at t=initial, and do not take into account any snow already fallen.

Example: 2 inches expected to fall around Plymouth. Assuming this is correct, once 1 inch has already fallen, if the guidance is still correct, it will forecast 1 inch from now to the end of the event. (This is not based on actual current weather, it’s just an example based on today’s event.)

  9. Another horrific event, this time at Bondi Beach near Sydney, Australia. At least 12 killed, including gunman, in shooting targeting Jewish celebration.

The world is falling apart!! I can’t believe the pure EVIL that exists on this planet!!

    1. The saddest part about that, other than the senseless loss of life, is that it’s actually quite simple to be the opposite of evil.

        1. I do that everywhere, every day. It’s easy and besides giving others a smile, even if I’m a total stranger, it also makes me feel great and just makes me want to continue.

It’s NOT DIFFICULT. It really isn’t.

People have to set aside egos. People have to set aside thinking every thought they have is superior to everyone else’s. Ya know something? It’s NOT. You’re only as good as you make yourself. You are not automatically above everyone else. Once we lose that mentality in a mass sense, things will improve. Will it ever happen? I hold out hope.

  10. Forecasts for wind seem mixed. Do you have an estimate for the Natick area? Looks like snow here will come in under our plow man’s minimum so I will be manning the shovel or broom. Good day to watch a good football game.

  11. Almost got Wordle in 3, but picked the wrong word. Wordle in 4. 6 more days until we’re in town- come on snow after the 19th!

Although for my older daughter, whatever happens this Christmas she’ll get plenty of snow next year- she’ll be moving from our home in San Jose CA to Waterville Maine to attend Colby college next year :). Proud mom.

    1. I know I already said it, but congrats to her again! She’s definitely in for an experience with weather, living up in NNE!

  12. TK !!!

Stopping by the comments to say hi and thankyou for a refreshing alternative to the crap out on social media these days. Ughhh!!!

So yesterday I went back to read some older posts and realized how good you are at pattern recognition without hype, just telling people what they can expect. Let me cite a specific example from the blog on December 6. This is your 6-10 and 11-15 day sections. Everyone compare these write-ups to what is happening now and what is expected in the 1-5 day from today.

    Here it is

    DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 11-15)

Reinforced cold arrives to start the period along with wind. Watching one or two clipper-style low pressure areas for mix/snow chances mid period before dry, cold weather returns at end of period.

    DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 16-20)

Guidance trends have been wish-washy the last couple days – basically no help for this period of time. Expectations for indices that tend to control the pattern as well as little use of forecast persistence (old forecast tool I learned as a novice) leads me to not change things too much at this point. I’ll watch for a potential low into the Great Lakes and a brief warm-up, then the region near a battle zone between mild air to the south and cold from Canada, the latter of which probably ends up winning out, and not without a precipitation potential before the end of the period. Lots of time to solve the pattern puzzle here…

Ok that’s it. Wow man. Props to you and your mentors. You guys do it right. Great work!!!

    Until next time, DOH!!!!!

    1. Well, gee… Thank you!

Always good to see you pop in here, and I know you never answered this officially, that I remember, but I’m pretty sure you’ve been here since the WBZ blog days ~2009/2010.

But Mr. DOH, do you like the Simpsons or pizza more? 😉 hah!

  13. Sky a bit bright, snow very light. Here at Woods Hill I’m at about 0.5 inch for new snow, which is the lower limit of my expected range for my area. I’ll end up at under 1.0, but maybe another 0.1 or 0.2 to go.

We need to watch for a mini ocean-enhanced back-lash near the coast this evening.

  14. Speaking of the old WBZ weather blog, it’s a good thing other stations didn’t try to copy it. It’s too bad it failed. “Crash and burn” to say the least! 🙁

Of course had it been successful, WHW would not have existed. Just as well. 🙂

    1. It only failed because the station would not let anybody moderate it. Barry B. was quite disgruntled about that, rightfully so.

Later he joked to me that WHW stole all the readers. And yes he was joking. 🙂

      Hi Barry! 🙂

  15. Just cleared snow before the Pats Game. 3/4 inch. that is all.
Sun was breaking through the clouds. Melting going on.
Not sure what will become of this “Back Lash”, but short of any additional accumulation from that. I believe this is just about it
    for accumulation.

    GO PATS!!!!

  16. It stopped snowing. According to radar there’s an I/95 “hole” from Boston to Providence. 🙁

I hope this isn’t the end of the story.

  17. With their 11 wins currently, the Patriots are most likely in the playoffs. Winning their 12th against the Bills clinches the AFC East. If they lose today, 12 wins … whenever it comes … will clinch a playoff spot. They are also in the hunt for the AFC #1 seed vs the Broncos.

The Patriots are slight underdogs today (+1.5). Should be a good game.

  18. Watching reports this morning out of Coventry RI, where the suspect in the Brown University mass shooting was apprehended, I did notice some moderate snowfall. Could that area have been the jackpot?

    1. Oh yeah, momentum completely over to Buffalo.

At 24-14, this defensive possession is a must hold to 3 or no points because they’d still be ahead at 24-21 is Buffalo gets another TD, but what will their mindset be if that happens?

  19. The Bills are a second half team. Pats tends always seem to let teams get back into it. This will be a 3 to 7 point game by the end of it

  20. Snowing again here, but lightly.

Patriots game has turned into a s**t storm. Hope they can hold on. Great experience for the playoffs.

    1. I am down to flurries.

Bills might take the lead and Pats might have to take it back. Tough game between evenly matched teams.

    1. To play the Ravens who beat Cincy in Cincy 24-0, intercepted Joe Burrow, twice.

It sounds crazy, but it’s important the Seahawks beat the Colts today to give them a 6th loss.

    1. If I could only count the times I heard this about the pats. Didn’t like it then so won’t do it in return. Chiefs has an 11 year streak. Hard to fault them

  21. Even worse, I fear Mahommes at least has a partially torn ACL by the way the knee hyperextended. Never like to see that.

  22. Mahomes may have severely injured his knee.

I want the Chiefs to lose, but I don’t want Mahomes out long term. It’s good for the game that he his healthy. We’ll see.

  23. First half good second half crapfeast with same mistakes from earlier in the season. . Bill pushed on the accelerator. Patriot took thier foot off the peddle. So annoying and Bills exposed them. Tonight the broncos game would be the only time i can see the broncos loosing.. its what i expected a close game just wasnt thinking a 21 point blown lead. Patriots have shown they can not come back from behind.

    1. They trailed in 8 of their 11 wins at some point in each game. They most definitely can come back.

This game was just one where they did not play well in the 2nd half and the Bills did. That simple.

  24. On the one hand, the radar looks good again in Boston and the latest visibility is down to 1.5 miles.

On the other hand, lower level dry air is working in, 7F temp/DP depression.

We’ve picked up a more powdery inch the last hour +, getting us close to 2” and definitely having an effect on road conditions.

  25. Re: Patriots game
I was disappointed that the bills came roaring back, but that’s what they do all the time. My feet are still sweating after watching that one.

I’ll say it again, EXCELLENT experience for the play offs for the whole team, especially Drake Maye. If they can win out, they’ll still win the division, but dreams of the #1 seed and the bye are likely a fantasy at this point.

Look at what they were last year and look at them now!!!!

    I’ll take it!!

  26. I will have to respectfully disagree on positives from today’s game.

Yes, the WHOLE season has been one large positive. 4 wins-4 wins-11 wins already. A coach who has had success in the past and clearly has done an amazing job. And a QB who has ascended. All great !!

But NO ! Those last 33 mins were humble pie on our defense. You’ve also got the Chargers, maybe the Ravens, certainly the Bills, the Lions, the Rams and maybe the Eagles.

And I look at Hadi’s favorite team, the Commanders. Young good QB, up and coming overall but injuries and a tougher schedule and their season this year went backwards.

So, you can’t ignore this golden opportunity this year as if there’s plenty to come. It’s not a guarantee and the Brady 20 year run and the Mahomes 11 year run are anomolies.

So, no, our D just got exposed as a non playoff level defense. No positives from today, but yes, the season as a whole has been a major positive, but I hope everyone has some adjusted playoff expectations after today.

Of course, this is my opinion only, so, I invite everyone to disagree 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. I most certainly take that invitation.

I’m not denying that the 2nd half was very disappointing. They played pretty crappily and didn’t get blown out, which actually makes its own statement, especially against a team that has been the master of comebacks and has a QB of that caliber.

That was a “wake-up call” 2nd half, which in itself is a kind of positive. Did you expect the Pats to be 11-3 and have beaten the Bills in Buffalo and split the season series with them? 🙂

    2. Agree all around with Tom. The Patriots didn’t make a single stop until toward the end of the fourth. They shut them down completely until the very last drive of the second quarter and not again until the 4th. If they had just made one more stop at any point in the second half (which would have been a total of just 2 stops), they would have prevailed. No excuse for the complete melt down. Sorry. I don’t give them a pass for that. Very disappointing but I feel they will put this one behind them and come back swinging next week.

      1. They key is how they bounce back from this. (Some of) the fans will dwell. The team will review it and move on. 🙂

  27. 7 teams qualify for the playoffs.

If the Colts upset the Seahawks in Seattle, they will be 8 teams with 5 or fewer losses. They are ahead 6-3.

The 7 loss teams are of no concern to the Patriots as the most losses they can get are 6.

    Not to worry?

At Ravens next week is tough. Lose that, that’s 4 losses.

At Jets next and that can be a house of horrors sometimes for the Pats and suddenly, the last game against a Dolphins team who is rolling.

So, please Seattle, beat the Colts !!!!

    1. If Pats lose to my Jets they don’t deserve to make playoffs. The Jets are an embarrassment- now way Pats lose that game

    1. The Broncos did NOT clinch the number one seed. There are three games left and they hold a two game lead due to the tiebreaker.

  28. Plowing the neighborhood now , nice little hit , huge difference getting off the highway at 4 seeing the difference over Boston & that was before we just got a few inches

  29. If only we were all qualified to be an NFL coach or player. Bottom line is, we are not. I see the same in high school sports, everyone knows better than the coach or players. Totally takes the enjoyment out of the game. Go Pats and I hope Mahommes had a speedy recovery,

    1. Mahommes is so good for the league. Makes it more fun. I never like to see a player injured. Here’s hoping he’s back by the start of next season.

    2. Wait …. Is this because some of us said we didn’t see any positives from yesterday’s game?

And then mentioned what’s seen at high school games for behavior?

  30. Beautiful wintery night out there with a covering of snow over the white lights on our front bushes.

Ended up with about 2.5″ here in Coventry. Watch out if driving around in the AM….we’ve got some black ice that has formed under a coating of snow on my driveway after I cleared it earlier in the day.
