DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 7-11)
Low pressure to our west redevelops just to our east early today then heads away from the region. Showery precipitation falls as rain, but surfaces temperatures near to slightly below freezing over inland areas mean that additional icing can take place. The relocated low to the east can actually pull slightly colder air in during the morning, so a warm-up to eliminate the ice would be somewhat delayed, but eventually would happen as we started to trend drier as the low would be moving further away from here. The final round of precipitation may include some wet snow and sleet mixed in with rain in the region. Following this, high pressure builds in tonight and Thursday with dry and seasonable weather. After that, low pressure tracks north of our region on Friday and Friday night, pushing milder air in on a southerly wind, leading to rain showers later Friday with the low’s cold front. This will move through the region and settle just to the south and east of the area on Saturday as a larger and slightly stronger low heads for the eastern Great Lakes. This will lead to a more substantial rain event Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, and as the low pressure area makes its way through southeastern Canada, we’ll see the return of slightly colder, drier air, with increasing wind on its back side. As colder air arrives I cannot rule out a few snow showers later Sunday.
TODAY: Cloudy morning with occasional rain, which can still be freezing rain early in the day mainly west of I-95 and especially north of I-90. Clouds break for sun at times afternoon with a passing rain/mix/snow shower possible. Highs 37-44. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clearing. Watch for icy spots on untreated surfaces. Lows 20-27. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 35-43. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 23-30. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Increasing clouds. Late-day rain showers. Highs 43-50. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Evening rain showers. Patchy fog overnight. Lows 33-40. Wind shifting to N and diminishing to under 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Cloudy. Afternoon rain likely. Highs 36-43 except 40-47 Cape Cod and South Coast. Wind N shifting to E up to 10 MPH except SE 5-15 MPH Cape Cod / South Coast.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain likely. Patchy fog. Temperatures steady or rising slightly. Wind E up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Cloudy early with a chance of rain until mid morning. Clouds break late morning leading to a sun/cloud mix afternoon and a chance of a late-day mix/snow shower. Highs 45-52 in the morning, with a temperature fall back to the 30s by late-day. Wind variable 5-15 MPH shifting to W increasing to 15-25 MPH with higher gusts during the afternoon.
DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 12-16)
A couple snow showers possible otherwise mainly dry and seasonably chilly early next week, with unsettled weather potential mid to late week, depending on the set-up regarding an East Coast trough. Monitoring this for more detail over the coming days.
DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 17-21)
Trend is to have a battle zone between cold to north and milder to south nearby with additional unsettled weather chances. Colder should begin to win out toward the end of the period, potentially increasing snow chances.
Gm, thanks tk!
A chilly rain this AM just wrapped up.
Also, to those experiencing graphical purple space on iphones and other mobile devices on the page (I was reading the previous page) – it is not the iphones fault. It is wordpress when it encounters pages that have long links because it can’t do line breaks properly with them – it’s why that purple bar on the side goes away when you hold your phone in landscape mode instead (since you give the link more room). You can hate iphones for other reasons (which, idk why anyone hates on any modern phone – android or apple – other than the exorbitant prices, to me it’s all modern magic when a lot of us came from the days of plugging in modems that made loud sounds just to connect to each other) but not for wordpress having ancient ways of handling long links.
Yes, definitely WP issue more than iPhone. But still never going to get me to come over to iPhone. We’re tech nerds here. I listen to my family superiors because I’m at the bottom of the tech ladder. They haven’t steered me wrong yet. 😉
Been fascinated by and working with new tech since the mid 70s when I was asked to be head of my then company’s word processing dept. Folks always have favorites. We could discuss for days which is better. I have a story of why we adopted MS word and not word perfect which was far superior. 😉
Truth is it boils down to ……people have favorites which doesn’t make one better than the other. It’s all right to prefer one system.
Yes indeed!
Thanks Dr. Absolutely true. We used WP in my former work life. There is or should be a fix.
Thanks TK
Thanks TK !
Caught the train today, wordle: 4
I think we are around or slightly less than 2 weeks away from Logan breaking its 6″ in one event, snow drought. I think that battle zone TK describes in the long range, with the help of a disturbance, is going to get it done.
Great job Tom. I did not fare so well, but still caught the train and made the 6 car.
5 for me. Again. Great 4 and 6.
5 is nice. 6 not so much. 🙂
Very icy here in Woburn … main roads are OK due to previous treatment, but walkways etc. – forget it. They did not call a school delay. I don’t think a closure was needed, but a delay would have been much safer as we’re borderline and about to rise above freezing. But that’s not a magic switch that just shuts it off. It takes time.
Areas west and north are in worse shape and that will last longer.
Be safe in Woburn and all areas dealing with ice.
We are, at the moment, in the upper 30s, so thankfully not dealing with that.
Good morni g and thank you TK.
Just dropped to 32 here after being g up t 37 around 230 this morni g.
Ocean: 42
Wordle; 6. Phew! Just barely caught the train as I was hopelessly lost.
Re: IPhone
Most technical persons I know always choose Android. I will NEVER own an Iphone.
What exactly are the differences? You keep saying Android is far superior. Try and sell me.
Can’t sell you. It is mostly tecnical reasons. Android is more developer friendly.
If like your IPhone, have at it and enjoy. You just will never get me to come over.
It’s a matter of preference, Philip. Nothing more. I am a huge fan of apple products. I’ve owned them for decades and VERY rarely had issues. It’s tech support, if I have questions, Is phenomenal. One thing I have always done is use any and all technology to its fullest. I enjoy exploring those technologies to their fullest.
Remember, the issue with the WP screen is 100 percent a word press issue and has nothing to do with either OS.
After 1st guess, I had 1 letter in position and 1 out of position.
I made a guess for my 2nd one that I thought for sure was the word. NOPE! I took a wrong turn after that and then barely caught the train just before it exited the station. 🙂
Oddly I see the opposite but that’s to be expected.
Thanks TK.
1,402 ❄️
Sutton 2 hour delay.
Thanks, TK.
My least favorite winter weather is happening through Saturday. It’s like late March but it’s happening in early January: Dreary, dark, rainy, and the holiday period is over. Yes, even I pine for summer during these stretches.
My iPhone says to expect sleet in the next hour and yet the temperature here in Quincy is 37.
Sleet is not likely with that temperature, not even close. No icing here thankfully.
Sleet can most definitely occur at 37.
It’s pretty icy here as was predicted. The nearby schools like Lunenburg and Fitchburg are closed. It’s fortunate that there wasn’t more precipitation to freeze up on the surfaces.
I got Wordle in 4.
Excellent!
Great SClarke
Thank you TK!
Wordle: 3
WOW! Outstanding!
Awesome Sue and all !!!
Wow Sue. Excellent
Nice!!
Heartbreaking morning in Uxbridge and the entire police cimmunity. An Uxbridge police officer was killed overnight assisting a motorist on 146.

So sad to hear.
That is terrible news.
Thank you, TK!
6Z GFS has quite a potent storm system out around 1/16.

Still 30 here, BUT the dew point is 27.
Wonder what I get when the precip arrives soon?
Sorry meant to say 32 here. dp is correct.
We are 31 with a 30 DP. It looks as if we have a steady light rain. But the driveway looks like a shiny skating rink. Pajama day here. I’m
Definitely not going out
It is Sleeting at Worcester or a sleet/snow mix. Hard to tell.
Have a look
https://www.holycross.edu/visit/webcams
Looks like it is raining here. Temp 32.
I see a bunch of yellow on the radar. I wonder if that
is the SLEET?

Sometimes it is and sometimes. At the top of the radar, you can click on High Res but I am not sure it’s any better at explaining the expected precip types.
Now Snowing in Worcester
Re iphone v. android discussion:
There is quite a difference between both but most regular phone users would never be bothered by it. I’ve used both but prefer iphones. Androids can do a lot of multitasking with running multiple programs at once on the same screen rather than having to switch back and forth. Another thing that I loved when having an android was the ability to run programs in the background. I could, say, use telnet, torrents and IRC even on an android and stay connected to servers. Whereas with an iphone if you don’t keep an app focused and in the forefront, you’d get disconnected within a couple minutes. Additionally, it acts more like a computer with ease of access over files and storage space – whereas apple’s primary focus is making you use the cloud.
But I switched to the iphone because of a few things; my androids would all inevitably get bogged down over time as programs became more intensive and focused for newer models. I had one android phone where when I rebooted it, it took three minutes to turn back on. Not ideal in an emergency. Iphones always boot up fast, even my old iphone 11 which had the latest ios on it. The closed ecosystem means that it’s very improbable for bad actors to infiltrate it whereas it’s quite simple for android apps to have malware that can infect your phone. Apps always come to iphone first. The ecosystem works really well together so my apple watch, apple tv, iphone, ipad etc all seemlessly communicate and pass information between one another.
So both have their great points. Both have weak points. As time progresses there are even less differences. They’re both still magical devices that are a feat of modern invention. I’ll laugh when someone complains about their internet being slow like “oh, you’re mad that we’re in a moving vehicle traveling at 60mph and the magical invisible beam that’s transmitting to a cell tower which is then communicating over fiber cables to the destination server on the internet and then routing back the opposite way to you… is too slow?” It’s funny because I vividly recall having a 1200 baud modem load an image line by line and getting mad at my cat when it would knock over a receiver in the house.
Excellent post. Thank you.
Very icy here in JP. Temp at 31.6
A mix of rain and sleet here and definitely glazing on ground.
And trees/bushes
We’re not icing and perhaps won’t, but our temp has certainly dropped from 39F to 34F.
The column has cooled off enough for light snow, in Worcester, on the Holy Cross webcams.
Thanks, TK.
Sheet of ice outside here around 10 (when I had intended to walk to the car — nope). It’s still not fully eased, but it looks as though I’ll be ok for an airport run later.
Please be safe. Nasty day
Ssk, how is your wife doing on the first full day after surgery?
She is doing ok thank you . It was a long 5 hour surgery but it went well ( time will tell how well ). She will be hospitalized up to a week but recovery at home with help up to six weeks or more . Thank you Jean .
We are up a degree to 32 and light snow
Mix of sleet and freezing rain with accasional snow flake here in Billerica
There is a glaze on power lines and driveways
Wordle in a very lucky 3
Wow. Fantastic
Outstanding!!
Snowing here now.
Big flakes
This is the hardest I’ve seen it snow this season.
Nice !!
Huge flakes in Dedham
Looking out my wife’s Hospital room window , that was a nice little snow squall, seems to be wrapping up now
How is she doing SSK? Hope all went well.
2nd JpDave’s thoughts.
I do also
Jean asked me above & it’s all in that comment thank you . Seems to be ok but has a long road ahead , thank you all !!!
Glad to hear it went well. Was thinking of you both!
Thank you
A beautiful healthy coating of snow. Tough to measure, but maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Very large snow flakes. NICE!!
Very fun. Not enough snow here to do more than make the ice layer slipperyer
A bonus snow falling here in Quincy. Not sticking so far. I am just surprised it is occurring at all. Will likely be the last for awhile with the upcoming temporary pattern change.

Its subtle, but there for what caused a compact precip burst while the column cooled just enough.
MJO hangs in the circle of death for another week before emerging into weak phase 6. This is a factor against significant snowfall events in SNE until at least January 20.
In other words, exactly what I said yesterday, and the day before.
And there is still no guarantee after 1/20, just a little better chance.
Beginning to look a lot like Jan, 2015. But we KNOW it will NOT be the 2nd coming of that Winter!! that’s for sure.
I’ll wait until Feb 1, then IF nothing much happens, I will be doing my HO_HUM dance!!!
They key regarding MJO is its intensity. It re-emerges into 6. It will make it through phases 7, 8, and 1, all of which become more favorable for the more classic winter type weather here, ASSUMING the index remains relevant. The last 3 or 4 winters the MJO has been the enemy of the snow lover, playing the role of Lucy every time Charlie Brown comes up to kick the football…
A lot of weather apps have been showing upper 40s to near 50 Saturday for the Boston area.
No. Not happening. C.A.D. will keep it in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
Continue to read you all regularly. You have lured me back with your wordle postings. I managed 3 today…one of my common first words got me three of 5. I usually do wordle and then connections every day.
I’ve been touting whw at work and the 6” Logan drought. Thanks for all everyone puts into the blog. You (and now the return g Patriots) help shorten my winter as a teacher! Oh yes…of course the kids don’t. I was reviewing the exam we took in December and innocently dropped 6-7 to the delight of the group! Happy 2026 all!!
Nice 3! Well done!!
Awesome to see you and love that you also Wordle. Great 3!!!!
That was SUPPOSED to say the kids DO! My students are terrific..even in January!!
Thanks, TK!
Continued best wishes and prayers, SSK, for your wife for a quick and successful recovery! 🙂
Boston (Logan) received 0.1” today.
Boston total snowfall to date: 5.4”
I am feeling really GOOD about my prediction of 56.2” for this winter. Only 50.8” to go!! 😉
Very easily attainable.
SSK. Just saw your comment to Jean. I’m glad all went well prayers continue for Mrs SSKs recovery
Thank you
❤️
Ditto. Glad everything went well and hoping the recovery goes as expected if not better. Sending prayers and positive thoughts.
Message received.
