Monday January 5 2026 Forecast (7:10AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 5-9)

This week’s pattern is unsettled but not stormy. In other words, several lower-impact systems will pass by. The first one we’ll deal with is a small low pressure area moving east southeastward through our region tonight, producing a light snowfall. The next one comes along later Tuesday to early Wednesday, taking a track just north of our area. This removes the colder air aloft so that what falls occurs as rain, but cold air trapped at the ground means some of this rain can freeze on surfaces in the early hours of Wednesday – something we’ll need to pay close attention to in regards to walking and driving on untreated surfaces. It then warms sufficiently enough to eliminate the icing issue as we move through the day Wednesday, but a few additional rain and snow showers can accompany the return of colder air as the low moves away. High pressure builds in with fair and seasonably chilly weather Thursday, but the weather becomes unsettled again by later Friday as the next low pressure system races east northeastward and starts tracking northwest of our region, dragging a frontal system toward us with milder air and a rain shower chance.

TODAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 21-28. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts early, then diminishing.

TONIGHT: Cloudy with light snow of up to 1 inch accumulation. Lows 13-20. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 31-38. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Pre-dawn light rain and away-from-coast freezing rain likely. Lows 27-34 evening, then a slow overnight rise. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Spotty light rain early. A rain or snow shower later in the day. Highs 40-47. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 20-27. Wind W 5-15 MPH.,

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 35-43. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 23-30. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Increasing clouds. Late-day rain showers. Highs 42-49. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 10-14)

A stronger low pressure area cuts through the Great Lakes with mild air and rain showers here January 10. As that system moves through eastern Canada we see colder, windy, and dry weather return January 11. Watching for additional unsettled weather with potential rain/mix/snow in the January 12-14 period, however major storminess is not expected.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 15-19)

No significant changes to the outlook at mid month with a pattern of variable temperatures. There have been a few medium range model hints of perhaps a more important storm nearby early or mid period, but not confident this takes place. Will monitor trends.

  1. Thanks TK !

    Wordle: 6 (I’ll take it ! 🙂 )

What a great, unexpected season for the Patriots, 14-3. Superb !!

In the playoffs, I really trust Drake Maye and the offense.

I hope the defense will prove me wrong, I don’t trust the Pats defense at all. The 2 red flags for me are … they don’t get to the opposing QB on passing downs and while they make a few, they don’t force enough negative plays, where the opposing offense losing yards on the play. (See the Denver defense for how to do this, but you can’t trust Denver’s offense, they have they opposite problem).

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

16 this morning and that was the low.

    Ocean: 42

    Wordle; 3

    YAY PATS!!!
I’ll take 14-3. Not too shabby.

I think Pats can handle the Chargers. After that we’ll have to wait and see who the opponent(s) will be. Fully healthy I think they could beat anyone! We shall see.

          1. Oh, sorry. Since I knew you knew this word well, I thought you might get it sooner. 🙂
Hey, you got it and did not fail. NO SHAME in that!!!!

      1. Thanks SClarke. I lucked out with my 2nd guess after the 1st guess just yielded 1 letter in position. 2nd guess got the last 4 letters in position so I just had to pick the correct 1st letter.

  3. The Pats win was good to see and a good way to go into the playoffs. What’s interesting to me is that there are many Pats’ starters who, IMO, would not be able to start for other teams.

But the team has a culture of excitement, fun, camaraderie, unselfishness, belief, and spirit that is ingrained in the organization and the fabric of the locker room. Many teams think they have this, but don’t. Having this culture alone does not guarantee wins, but it goes a long ways. I give Vrabel credit. The locker room under Mayo was a nightmare.

    1. I love the feel of this team. I think any feeling of camaraderie under BB came from Brady’s doing. But Brady could work with players other teams might not consider as keg. One comes to mind. Walker was Brady’s first choice. He was Denver’s fourth.

I’m loving Vrabel. Does Maye get some credit for this spirit or is Vrabel’s coaching allowing Maye to shine also

Just wonderings of a fan who only partly understands the game

      1. I do believe it started with the coach & went through the organization. Coach has worked very hard with everyone ( but worked very hard with Drake ) Mike has always been a proud patriot & he was a phenomenal player & good guy during his patriot days . Mike has been trying to get this coaching stint for sometime & that’s well known ! Mike is a no nonsense coach , but he is also a players coach . I knew once Mike was hired that instantly the team got better overnight . This new season now is up for grabs & for the pats need to stay healthy . This offseason the pats need to continue to spend Money & get this term even better . I do believe that coach , Drake & Josh need to stay together as that is an excellent lineup

  4. Vicki: Just so you know, the Super Bowl will be on Sunday February 8 at 6:30 on NBC.

Hopefully for you, no more games on Fox for the Patriots during the playoffs.

          1. The Seahawks, Rams, and Broncos are probably at the top of the list. I am guessing the Seahawks have a 20% chance of winning the SB. (It could be higher.) The Pats do not have as good a chance as this team but the Pats believe in themselves which has gotten them further than anyone predicted. For now, they are a field goal favorite over the Chargers.

  5. The column has moistened enough in Albany, NY and Westfield, MA to allow some light snow to be reaching the ground.

Still very dry with large dewpoint depressions in central/eastern New England.

      1. I’m not exactly sure if that is true.

But, since we need colder air for snow, as opposed to rain and colder air can be very, very dry, we definitely experience times in the cold season where we lose snow to virga.

But, it happens frequently with rain too, here, but especially out west and in western Canada. How often do they see forest fires due to lightning with no rain falling on tstorms because all the rain evaporates before hitting the ground.

      2. This is not correct.

Also, many of our rain events occur when snowflakes moisten the column until the precipitation is in air no longer cold enough to support snow.

There is no statistic showing it takes longer for snow to reach the ground than rain, in terms of overcoming dry air.

  6. So again, time to address a misconception that it somehow “goes wrong” when it’s going to snow and “doesn’t go wrong” when it’s going to rain.

    100% untrue.

I’ve explained this so many times now, but one more time…

    Let’s take a different approach.

We live around 42N latitude. This is not the arctic. This is in the temperate zone, next to the ocean, where we have many influences for all different kinds of weather. Also, if you look at our climate, “snow events” are confined mainly to the months of December through March, which obviously the border months having less frequent events and the middle two months having the most. Yes, there are anomalies, and there are events outside that 4-month window, but I’m talking “in general” here.

That’s 1/3 of the year that you’re most eligible for snow. That isn’t because the atmosphere is somehow against the Boston area getting snow. It’s because of Boston’s location on the planet.

We are game for rain events 12 months of the year, including the 4 months that most of our snow events occur, because we are located in a spot where the temperatures are often marginal.

There is nothing special going on that takes away snow and gives rain, in a relative sense. We get what we’re supposed to get, and within that is a fairly significant amount of variability.

    1. Makes great sense, TK. Thank you.

Not sure where the saying comes from but I’ve heard it my whole life. Perhaps it fits here or maybe not…….if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes. We are so changeable.

      1. Found this. AI produced. Maybe it doesn’t apply

“If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” is a popular saying, often attributed to Mark Twain or Will Rogers, but with no definitive origin, reflecting the common experience of rapid weather changes, especially in places like New England, the Midwest, or mountainous regions where conditions can shift dramatically and quickly, from sun to snow, or vice versa. The saying highlights the unpredictable nature of weather, suggesting patience for a favorable change, notes The Hutchinson News, John Kucko Digital, and Smithsonian Magazine.

  7. Glancing at all the 12z info – no changes to be made to the discussion & forecast at this time!

      1. It’s moving east. It starts there first. Then it gets to Boston. The system is moving west to east. Worcester is at a more western location than Boston is, therefore it’s likely to snow there before it snows in Boston, and it’s also likely to end there before it ends in Boston.

It also does not “always snow in Worcester”.

Worcester gets more snow than Boston annually because of where they are located. This is just a fact of geography. See my post above.

  8. For those that go to what use to be called Mass General Hospital, the higher ups are about to make things way worst for many outpatients. Womans and bringhams had a certain pay grade levels, certain low level centralized requirements in terms of training to draw blood and are trying to go in that direction. My Dad made a 11 week program for people to be trained to draw blood, this woman at that hospital who now runs some out patient clinics for the wider hospital is upset about my Dad’s made program he developed 15 years ago saying she has people trained for 2 weeks and does fine. Problem is she constantly get complaints, people get bruises etc and gets sued. Meanwhile my dad’s employees are trained properly they have 4 levels of people based on training, the hospital with their money issues wants to merge some of my Dad’s levels which is an insult to all those who have gone through different training programs across the country and his own made based on experts in the field. Its not just his department either, other departments are having their employee levels merged. You could see a major decrease in employees in Mass General, major distruptions all because of the greedy higher ups who have lied to the managers and workers. So please the next time you go to one of the Mass General hospital places remember this. The techs your dealing with may or may not be properly trained anymore. You may see very long wait times no fault of the employees you see on the ground. They are also basically getting rid of any time of raises. use to be you could see any where between a 2 to 5% increase, Now the max is 2%. They wonder why medical professionals are leaving. They are treated like garbage both by the public and by they people who are running the hospitals. I knew when they merged hospitals things were going to go worse. Whats more worrying is that they are constantly considered a top 5 hospital which makes me wonder how bad all the other ones are.

    1. Beyond inexcusable. I have a friend who is at Brigham. She told Me a couple of years ago that things were deteriorating

      1. Brighams has 1 of the highest levels of getting sued but one with a better profits in the mgh partners systems. Meanwhile other hospital systems are incorporating what my Dad has done and they have seen improvements. Some of rich will likely see some of my Dads staff go too

    2. It has been very noticeable the drop off in all areas. Hospitals are an extension of the same corporate greed found everywhere.
Once upon a time hospitals existed to help and heal people. NOT anymore. It is ONLY HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN MAKE!!!

I have been DISGUSTED with the whole medical system for years now! DISGUSTED!!!!

      1. There been so many people at management levels to workers fighting against it but also needing to worry about thier jobs

      2. I learned from my mom to always research and then research more before seeing any doctor. It was never difficult. But I lost an amazing pcp a couple years ago to retirement due to health issues. It took at least a year to find someone as talented and who was taking new patients

It should not be that hard and the best should not be do scarce.

  9. This snow event is going down the tubes. After a light dusting the snow has been stopped for 1 1/2 hours and still stopped here.

  10. Thanks, TK!

It was -35 degrees 122 years ago tonight here in Taunton, January 5, 1904. This is one of the coldest nights ever recorded in Massachusetts. The coldest night, I believe, was -40 in Chester in 1984.

    1. Talking to myself again but …. Huge flakes. Maybe 0.25. Radar seemed to indicate sleet but was solid snow here

  11. According to JR, the late week “thaw” is temporary and is NOT part of a new pattern change. He was very adamant about that.

His early call on Sunday night’s game: No precipitation and a temperature of 35F.

    1. I’m not surprised he agrees with most of us – because none of us were really talking about a longer-term pattern change at least into mid January.

  12. Waking up to a thin new coating of snow which was topped with a light glaze.

It hasn’t always been for much, but it has snowed often this cold season.
