COMMENTARY
Before going forward through the coming 5 days, a quick look back at the last 2. Bermuda High weather pattern, same general set-up with high pressure off the US East Coast pumping very warm to hot and humid air into the region. But let’s look at Boston. There were a couple striking differences between the two days in the same location that are the type of thing that is not always too easy to forecast, even in the short term, although I got one and kind of missed the other. At Logan Airport, where the city’s official observations are taken, there was some abundant cloud cover to start the day out Thursday with a disturbance moving through the region. Eventually more sunshine was observed. The southwesterly air flow was weak enough so that a sea breeze developed and prevented the temperature from reaching 90, while the dew point stayed quite high at 70+, oppressive humidity. Fast forward to Friday. There was plenty more sunshine for a good part of the day with only some limited cumulus clouds around late in the day, and then a shadow from the anvil of distant thunderstorms blotting the sun out in the evening. But the day featured the temperature climbing a few degrees above 90 when the wind, which was a little more notable, shifted to west and northwest, a direction often noted for a down-slope effect that not only heats the air up heading out to the airport, but also dries it out, so while the temperature over-achieved expectation, the dew point, which sat in the oppressive 70s prior, dropped into the still humid but slightly more tolerable 60s. This was a classic example of this phenomenon, which was definitely under-estimated by yours truly.
DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 8-12)
Our stretch of very warm to hot, humid weather continues this weekend, with today being the more humid but least hot of the two, while there’s a slight reversal of this on Sunday with a bit more heat but a bit less humidity, accomplished by a southwesterly air flow today shifting to more westerly on Sunday. Isolated to scattered shower and thunderstorm chances are greatest today, with the potential for one somewhere in eastern coastal areas as a disturbance departs the region first thing in the morning, and the chance returning in the afternoon and early evening in response to diurnal heating. Additionally, a small disturbance may trigger a few more nighttime storms favoring areas to the south of I-90. This is followed by a quieter day in terms of storm chances Sunday, with just a remote risk for a pop-up afternoon storm. Monday continues the theme of very warm to hot and moderate to high humidity, sans storm chances as the atmosphere will be more stable. We then look to our west for a disturbance to pass through between later Tuesday and early Wednesday with another opportunity for showers and thunderstorms and a slight downward trend in the temperature while humidity says somewhat elevated. One other note, you’ll notice a hazier look to the sky at times the next few days – a little bit today, a little more Sunday morning, and potentially considerably more early next week, coming from high altitude wildfire smoke from the US Pacific Northwest.
TODAY: A sun / cloud mix. A shower or thunderstorm possible early morning favoring eastern areas, and anywhere in the afternoon. Highs 85-92 except 78-85 coastal areas. Dew point 68+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH but with potential sea breezes in all coastal areas.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. A shower or thunderstorm is possible early north of I-90. A batch of showers and thunderstorms may travel across some areas mainly south of I-90 late evening or overnight. Patchy fog. Lows 67-74. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: More sun than clouds. An isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm possible. Highs 84-91 except 77-84 coastal areas. Dew point 68+ but may drop somewhat during the day. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 67-74. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Sunshine dominates. Highs 83-90 but cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Dew point 60+. Wind WSW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 68-75. Dewpoint 65+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms probable. Highs 81-88 except cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Dew point 70+. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Shower chances with a possible thunderstorm. Fog patches form overnight. Lows 65-72. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: A sun / cloud mix with a possible shower favoring the morning to midday hours. Highs 81-88. Dew point drops toward 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 13-17)
West to east flow with a more up-and-down temperature pattern evolving. Best chance of unsettled weather from a passing disturbance will be early in the period before mainly dry weather takes over.
DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 18-22)
A shower or thunderstorm possible a couple times with passing disturbances / frontal systems in a west to east flow. Temperature trend is down a little to near to slightly below normal.
Good Saturday morning. Thank you TK
What a storm last night. We were east enough of it to miss heavy thunder and all but 0 .06” rain. The lightning show, however, was stunning. And long.
This morning 68/67 with a low of 67
Very long-lasting show indeed. It started with the large blob complex coming from the NYC / CT area, and then a new cluster of storms formed ahead of that – smaller, but lightning-prolific. It was a good nocturnal show visible for quite a distance.
Thank you for the details 🙂
I’m still smiling.
Wordle was a very lucky 3 today.
Excellent Vicki!
I got it in 4.
Nice 4
I had 3 letters in correct position with second guess. Took me to 5 to connect with the 2 remaining letters.
5 is good.
5 is great but a tad frustrating when that happens.
Thank you. Great 4!!
Great 3
🙂
Thanks TK.
Good morning and thank you TK
77/69 up from 74.
Made 92 yesterday
Ocean: 70
Wordle: FAIL. TOO many choices and ran out of guesses. Never thought of the correct word.
That thunderstorm complex ran out of gas before it reached here. Good thing as I didn’t want to close windows.
Darn. Tomorrow. You’ve been on quite a streak lately.
Glad you didn’t mind missing the storm.
Thanks, TK.
Just made it to the top of Mount Cardigan. Somewhat cloudy but still can see a long way. Estimating the temp is in mid to upper 60’s but winds are here so it feels cooler for sure.
Was hesitant to climb today because I suspected dense fog would be here but conditions aren’t going allow for fog this high up.
Gotta beat it back in a half hour or so. Do not want to go downhill in the rain.
Whoops! Rain drops are falling.
Every time I see the word “cardigan”, three things come to mind.
1) Mr. Rogers.
2) The poem I saw in TOFA a long time ago that read: “Put on a cardigan. Winter’s gonna start again.”
3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI6aOFI7hms
I have a fourth. Taylor Swift !!!
🙂
Awesome Longshot. Hoping no more than a few drops till you are at base
Thanks TK !
Wordle: 4
Nice
Very nice 4!
I could see the lightning show down here in Warwick.
Thanks TK,
Vicki sorry I couldn’t respond to you last night as my internet went out and my cell service is very spotty here. It ended being quite the lightning show. Same situation as you except I was just barley west of the heavy rain, I could literally smell the rain but was dry here.
Wow. Glad you got internet back. It sure was fun night
Thanks, TK.
A 5th heatwave is about to hit Western Europe this summer. Definitely an anomalous pattern, with Eastern Europe generally cooler than Western Europe for the past 2.5 months. This is set to continue. The extreme drought in parts of Northwestern Europe is a major concern and highly unusual. Crops have been decimated, wildfires have destroyed properties and there are severe water shortages. Our dry conditions are not even remotely comparable. We’ve had some rain. Really all of SNE has at times. But parts of Southern (Old) England, for example, haven’t had any for 6 weeks. And prior to that it was slim pickings. When I was there in May it was exceptionally dry. Much drier than here.
Oh dear. This is not good. thank you, Joshua.
Thanks TK. 0.41” in the rain gauge in storms last night here with wind and a lot of lightning but nothing severe. That was not the case though SW of Hartford in New Britain, Southington, and Bristol where there were several reports of downed trees and power lines.
After 7.7” in July and 1.4” a week into August, we are pretty much back to normal in the rain dept for where we should be this time of year.
Wordle 5. A struggle
I agree
you got it though. I never would have guessed that word in a milion years. NEVER came to mind. not even close.
Just seconding JPD. Great getting it
A perfect example of what I call midnight magic. I think sometimes it’s good to be half asleep when I do Wordle. I honestly never would’ve come up with this odd word if I’d been more awake. Not that it surprised anybody here, but I tend to overthink those things. That probably does not make sense. It’s just is odd when that word just pops in your head.
Makes perfect sense to me
Pictures from the parks around London look like the lovely green spaces have been taken over by desert. Contrary to what some are saying, the grass isn’t just going to come back when the rain returns. Some of it will. But resodding will be necessary in many parts. The desiccated roots after 6 weeks of no rain at all and prolonged heat will do a number on the grassy areas. The Royal Horticultural Society note that typical UK grass species can only sustain complete dormancy for about 4 to 6 weeks before permanent root death begins.
Thanks TK
Thanks, TK!
Interesting, heat advisories last 2 days, but not today and I’m not sure I see a ton of difference at the noon hour btwn today and the last 2.
AGREE 100%
Using only Logan as an example, the heat index at noon today is slightly higher than it was yesterday.
But they gave 2 reasons in their discussion for not issuing one today…
1) Dew points in the mid to upper 60s, which is not verifying, as the dew point there is 70.
2) This is a direct quote from the NWS discussion: “While
not necessarily a hazardous combo of heat and humidity and most are already acclimatized to the summer warmth, thus not looking at headline-level heat.”
Thank you TK!
Wordle: 5.
Current situation, sweating our a$$e$ off as we clean out the garage and basement. We should have moved in the winter!
Great 5 but uh ugh ugh.
Temp 88, dew point 74 in SE Sutton. I took trash out. That was enough for me.
Thanks TK! Left pre sunrise for my 12 mile run to beat heat. There was much more pronounced southerly breeze off the water at Fort Tabor in New Bedford. Still hot in beach and wind feels more west that south at times.
Neat observation during storms last night as they hit Long Island. While sitting on beach my flight tracker app had planes that were supposed to be landing at JFK circling this far north and east. It must have been some mess at NYC airports due to those storms.

oh, so there it is. You’ll be in it soon enough. How much, if any, makes it to Boston???? I’d say not much, but with this humidity, who knows.
Ironically, we’re back in Marshfield today into tomorrow morning for a friend’s surprise bday party and then back.
But, yes, I kind of tried to secure things at the site a bit in case they get a gusty tstorm.
This, from weather.us shows some strong gusty winds approaching the NY/MA border.

Didn’t realize that. Hope your campsite does NOT experience any strong winds.
Interesting radar as Tom shared. I’d love a second night, but won’t be greedy and will try to be happy with last night.
Sox up 2-0
Couldn’t run outdoors yesterday or today.
Will go on a 30 mile bike ride tomorrow. Will see how that goes.
I came through downtown uxbridge about an hour ago. There had to be about 200 or more motorcycles. I don’t know where they’re headed, but I’m hoping it’s not west. Radar looks nasty.
Those storms are moving Easdtward fairly quickly
https://radar.weather.gov/station/KENX/standard
They sure are. They almost look like they want to start falling apart. A little.
Don’t they always???? 🙂 🙂 🙂
It is so humid. They may stay together at least somewhat.
time will tell.
Sadly yes. It is starting to consolidate but as you say…..let’s see
They’ll most likely fall apart before they reach me.
90/73 currently
89/75. We had a high of 91
we had high of 91 as well, dp high of 73
Currently 84/75.
Our highs over the last three days:
Thu: 87
Fri: 87
Sat: 86
My winter 26-27 forecast is in! There will be 0″ in Lunenburg.
Today I took advantage of the tax-free weekend and bought a new snow blower. 🙂
Oh no. We’re cursed!!
Throw in the towel, red sox losing g 2-3
SouthCentral. Looks like incoming again.
Sox, down 5-2.
We are warned. But for my immediate area, it looks quite benign
Actually the entire warning box looks pretty benign. But I can’t see everything they see so will go with it.
And now we are no longer in the warned area. East side of it was pulled west
Looks like it’s all falling apart. Watches and Warnings have expired in a # of areas.
For T-storms.
Yep. And darn.
87/71
We have some light rain and distant thunder.
Snow blower, SClarke. I just like the sound of it. You’ll get plenty of snow, by the way. You live in the Siberian part of Massachusetts.
Sox lost. That’s fine. They’re bound to lose once in a while. Heck, they might have a losing streak. But their pitching will keep them in contention at this point.
A playoff series against the Yankees would worry me. To me, the Yankees are the best AL team, especially with Judge back.
Yup …….. Schlittler, Fried and Cole are as good a starting 3 as any playoff team can throw during a series.
Have always been fascinated by Daniel Fahrenheit.

What got me thinking of Fahrenheit was this song by Siouxsie and the Banshees and the current weather pattern (92 Degrees)
