DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 9-13)

As the long-staying Bermuda High pattern breaks down somewhat, we transition into a more west-to-east flow pattern heading into the new week. A weak trough has passed by and introduced slightly more stable and less humid air, though still with hot weather, for today, drastically limiting pop-up storm chances. You’ll notice some haze in the sky due to high altitude wildfire smoke from the Pacific Northwest, but nothing to the level of the thicker plumes we saw last month. The zonal flow pattern will send a trough and frontal system our way on Monday, but its timing is pretty late, bringing us a shower and thunderstorm chance late in the day and mostly during the evening and nighttime hours. It does look like this system will exit quickly enough for generally fair weather Tuesday and Wednesday. A weak low may pass south of our region on Wednesday but should be far enough south to have no notable impact. The next trough and frontal system from the west brings a shower and thunderstorm chance back on Thursday.

TODAY: Sunshine filtered at times by high clouds (early) and high altitude smoke (mostly later) and occasionally interrupted by passing fair-weather clouds midday into afternoon, with only a remote chance of an isolated pop-up shower or thunderstorm. Highs 85-92 except 77-84 Cape Cod / Islands. Dew point upper 60s to lower 70s trends slightly down. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Hazy sky, patchy ground fog. Lows 65-72. Dew point near 65. Wind W diminishing to under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sun eventually gives way to clouds. Highs 84-91 except 76-83 South Coast. Dew point 65+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms possible. Patchy fog develops. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 81-88. Dew point near 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 63-70. Dew point near 60. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 81-88 except 74-81 coast. Dew point 60+. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

    August 8 1899: Puerto Rico suffered a direct hit from a Category 4 hurricane, obliterating structures on most of the island region, and killing 3,000 people.

    The storm remains the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane in observed history.

    1. How come the media isn’t tallying good weekends? 😉 They’re quick to count every raindrop as a “rainy weekend” even if 2% of the area has a sprinkle for 10 minutes. 😉

      It’s been an awesome summer. Not notably hot (overall). Not notably muggy (overall). We’ve had our episodes, but that’s summer in New England. As far as they go, ours, so far, has been pretty “average”. We’re just beyond the halfway point – reached that earlier this week – so we’ll see what the rest of the back half holds.

      1. The “Beachgoers” have a 10-2 record since the unofficial start of beach season Memorial Day weekend. Currently on a 10 weekend winning streak with glorious weather!!

  5. First morning in a few days I’m able to enjoy sitting on my west facing deck. A nice breeze is blowing and it doesn’t feel “sticky.”

  12. Increase in the observance of Lion’s Mane Jellyfish this summer. I saw and photographed one beached at Ogunquit a few days ago.

    This is likely an indication of a cooling trend in North Atlantic waters as they thrive in colder water.

    A cooling trend has been identified and will likely continue as we start heading toward the end of the positive phase and the return of the negative phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO).

    This index is separate from ENSO, which is in a strong El Nino phase right now – one of the strongest we’ve observed (and we haven’t observed all that many, to be honest). This is the first notable El Nino since the massive eruption of the underwater volcano, Hunga Tonga in 2022, and it’s quite likely that eruption is having an influence on the intensity of this El Nino by having been a major factor in boosting underwater temperatures in the region that “feeds” the El Nino event.

    Media hasn’t mentioned much about this, but I also never expected them to. They’ve largely ignored that massive event since it occurred in early 2022.

    1. I’ve read about it a few times and have seen different predictions when it comes to how long the effects will last. I think I last read something like between 2028 and 2032.

      Prior to what I last read, I probably saw longer timeframes. The event was so massive that predictions themselves are probably suspect.

    2. Interesting. I would say the water in Buzzards Bay has been warm But moderately so. Not sure where JP Dave gets his ocean temps but I am surprised it is at 68 considering the heat with Bermuda High recently. Warm nights

    We had another round of severe warned storms move through last evening but the worst missed us to the south by 3-4 miles. Only got another 0.12” in the rain gauge.

    It’s 83F now with a dewpoint of 73F.

    Going to be intently monitoring that NHC page that Longshot posted above this week as we are leaving for a week away in St Lucia next Sunday. Even in a season like this with low activity, you are always at risk in the lesser Antilles in August.

  28. I love everything about summer . I don’t smoke but I just picked up a fat cigar as once in awhile ( once a year ) I love the smell & it reminds me of my late grandpa ( I don’t inhale )

    1. Tobacco scent for a long time reminded me of my father.

      When I was born, he was a cigarette smoker. He decided to step-down quit, so he switched to cigars for a short time (this I do remember briefly, I don’t remember the cigs). He then switched to a pipe for a few years but started to just light it and not inhale until he slowly worked out of the habit and feeling like he needed it. He finally put the pipe down and never went back.

      My mom was a cigarette smoker until the late 1980s when she went to the hypnotist guy in Boston. She came home, lit one, thought it was a failure, started to smoke it, decided she hated it, put it down, and never smoke another one for the remainder of her life.

      I have never smoked anything in my life.

      1. I smoked years ago , took me awhile after I got sober but eventually I did it . I just celebrated 31 yrs sober & I ———- LOVE EVERY MINUTE Of IT!!! The cigar was nice I only smoked half of it & tossed it .

  33. We’ve returned to west central MA and there’s some even drier air out here. I think orange’s DP is 57 or 59F, I forget which, but definitely the air is feeling much lighter. Warm, but more comfortable. It was definitely more humid leaving marshfield around 1pm.

    1. A very “ordinary” stretch of August weather. It’s been great! I had so much walking time the last 4 days (including 2 beach days Thursday & Friday).

      No records broken – in fact none even threatened.

    Yesterday when you asked me about the pyrotech running the Rockport show, my answer was “Warren”. That was only partially true. He was overseeing it. The lead pyrotechnician was 25 year old Hunter Woodworth. She is new to ATF and her show was amazing.

    This finale was designed by her. The 1-2-3 punch of sound in the last 5 seconds is phenomenal.

  35. Was a hot one golfing at Poquoy Brook in Lakeville this morning. A couple of dark clouds formed over us but went east. Was humid for the round then went to beach and the dive in water was the best relief! A very light breeze in the beach today. PERFECT beach day even with the heat!

        1. JP Dave: played ok. It was hot! 95 – it’s in poor shape. Was better last year. It’s a shame. It’s a great track! But many fairways are grass. Greens very slow. They must have over saturated this morning which is odd considering all the rain we have had.
