A ridge of high pressure along the East Coast brings that well-advertised summer preview for the next few days, but today will be the only day without any threat of unsettled weather as a cold front approaching later Thursday may trigger a few showers and thunderstorms, with this chance to increase even more Friday as the front moves into the region. However this front will be slow to push through and will take until early Saturday to do so, and then it will probably hang up near or just south of the South Coast, with no complete clearing right through the coming weekend. A front hanging in the region early in the period (May 7-8) will bring the chance for some additional unsettled weather to the region. After that, high pressure should take over with fair weather in the May 9-11 time frame. Temperatures near to slightly above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 12-16)
A cold front should bring some unsettled weather early in the period followed by a cool-down. There are some hits of the evolution of an omega block trying to get established toward the end of the period in which an upper level low may be situation somewhere near the East Coast. This may increase the risk of unsettled weather in the region.

Preliminary call is that May 4 is warm but brings a risk of showers, May 5 is cooler but the South Coast may run a rain risk, May 6 is warmer with a slight risk of showers, then additional temperature fluctuations and shower threats possible May 7-8 also. Don’t read this as a rainy period of days as there will probably be stretches of very nice weather between wet weather threats.

A wave of low pressure moves rapidly northeastward and brings a return to wet weather this afternoon and evening to southeastern New England. Behind this we get into a mild southwesterly air flow ahead of a cold front on Saturday. This front will bring rain showers to the region Saturday night but a rapidly closing-off upper low will then slow the front and allow a wave of low pressure to develop on it, however already north of the region, but close enough to prolong unsettled weather to some extent through all of Sunday and Monday. Low pressure tracks northeastward from the Mid Atlantic through southern New England today through early Thursday with unsettled weather which will include some moderate to heavy rain showers mainly this afternoon and evening, including the risk of some thunder as well. Improving weather arrives later Thursday but another low pressure area, this one smaller, will race northeastward and bring another rain threat later Friday into Friday evening. Low pressure will track northeastward from the Mid Atlantic through New England Wednesday with wet weather, pulling way Thursday with improving weather. A follow-up but smaller low pressure area will track northeastward and over or just east of New England by late Friday or very early Saturday with some additional rain possible. A building ridge of high pressure along the East Coast and the lack of surface high pressure in Canada is a recipe for fair weather and above to much above normal temperatures during the first few days of May.

High pressure sits atop southern New England today providing a great spring day, then slides enough for a breeze but not enough to take away the sun for most of Tuesday, however that breeze will be a cool one along the South Coast, then East Coast by late in the day, while being a mild breeze over the interior. Low pressure will move through the region Wednesday with wet weather as it tracks southwest to northeast, and instability behind it will hold some cloudiness and a chance of showers in the region for at least a portion of Thursday. First, a star gazing note: The Lyrid Meteor Shower peaks tonight, or in the early hours of Sunday, between midnight and dawn, with up to 20 meteors per hour possible. The sky conditions will be favorable for viewing this event with moon setting just after 1:30AM and no clouds.

I continue to have uncertainty about the pattern as May begins. I’ve seen computer-guidance hints of things ranging from a continuation of the April pattern to a quick shift to more persistent warmth to the rapid development of an omega block with this area on the unsettled side of it. If I had to lean toward any of these for the first 5 days of the month, it’s persistence of the pattern ongoing now through the next 10 days. This would probably mean a front or low pressure system would visit the region about 2 times during that 5 day period, so there will be plenty to work out, as far as detail and timing.

Southern New England will sit between departing low pressure to the east and approaching high pressure from the west today, with some cold air aloft, and this will result in a gusty breeze and a cloud/sun mix with a couple showers possibly popping up due to marginal instability. After that, it’s dry weather as high pressure gains more control through the weekend and Monday, and at least into Tuesday. The next low pressure system will approach from the southwest late Tuesday and I’m currently favoring a faster timing for its arrival, meaning that wet weather is possible before Tuesday is done. DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)
Low pressure will track just south of southern New England today and tonight then become absorbed by a larger low pressure circulation over the western Atlantic Friday as high pressure situates itself over the eastern Great Lakes. This will deliver some wet weather to the region today which may fall as sleet and/or snow in parts of the region at times especially this morning under heaviest areas and in higher elevations, then the steadiest is gone by afternoon and only intermittent light rain/mix showers are possible through tonight and a few lingering into Friday. Dry weather follows this weekend but with high pressure centered to the northwest of New England a cool northerly air flow will prevail. Going to lean toward a sooner arrival of low pressure from the southwest with a chance of rain by late April 24 into early April 25. A second system may bring additional unsettled weather later April 26 into April 27 with drier weather returning to end the period. Temperatures a little closer to normal during this period overall.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 29-MAY 3)
Fair, briefly cooler then milder April 29-30 before a risk of unsettled weather to start the month of May.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 18-22)
A broad low pressure circulation will still have an impact on the region today as southern New England sits on its western flank as a very small high pressure bubble slides south of the region. This combination results in a gusty west wind, some clouds, but dry conditions. Approaching low pressure from the Ohio Valley will track just south of southern New England Thursday and Thursday night, and will become part of the larger circulation offshore by Friday, bringing some rain and snow Thursday and lingering rain/snow showers on Friday, with snow being most likely in higher elevations of southwestern NH into north central MA, though some areas close to Boston may see flakes Thursday night and first thing Friday as well. At the moment it looks like high pressure will dominate April 23-25 with fair weather and a warming trend with the exception of cooler sea breezes at coastal locations. Low pressure from the southwest may bring wet weather to the region during the April 26-27 period with a cooling trend.

Fair weather returns for the end of April with more seasonable temperatures. Another low pressure system may bring some unsettled weather during the first couple days of May.
