Thursday Forecast

7:19AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 9-13)
No big changes on this update. Humidity hangs around today as a cold front slowly moves through the region, so after the damp start with some lingering showers behind last evening’s showers/storms, there may be some additional showers and storms developing again during today, though more scattered to isolated than the activity ended up being yesterday. The pick of the week, weatherwise, will be Friday – a very warm day with somewhat lower humidity. The weekend will be less warm, but more humid, thanks to a low pressure circulation south of New England and a general southeasterly to easterly air flow. As the low start to move to the west the flow may turn more southerly by Monday, still a humid set-up with a shower threat. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy with numerous to scattered showers morning. Partly cloudy with scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms afternoon. Humid. Highs 77-84. Wind SW to W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Less humid. Lows 62-68. Wind light W.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-82 Cape Cod, 83-88 elsewhere. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Partly sunny. More humid. Possible showers favoring the South Coast. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the middle 70s to lower 80s.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers possible. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the middle 70s to lower 80s.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms possible. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the middle 70s to middle 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 14-18)
Additional showers and possible thunderstorms with most south to southwest air flow August 14 followed by a more westerly air flow with a drier and warmer to hotter trend again.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 19-23)
A disturbance from the west cuts into the ridge with a shower/thunderstorm threat and a quick shot of cooler air before warmth and humidity resumes control.

  1. Thank you.

Great storm here around 2:30/3 this morning. Constant lightning with rolling thunder. Nothing warned. Just a true old fashioned New England thunderstorm to enjoy.

  2. Since July 23rd at Logan (17 days)

Every day has had a positive temperature anomaly (temp has been above avg)

5 days have had high temps of 90F or higher

8 days have had high temps of 85F or higher

The “lowest” high temp has been 82F

The coolest overnight low has been 68F

5 days have had an overnight low of 75F or higher

  3. May I give an unsolicited shameless plug to RadarScope?

I wasn’t on the blog during the storms last evening as I was playing cards
with Mrs. OS and then watching TV. During Cards I had the My Radar app
rolling. When the severe warning came in, I told my wife that it was NOT severe
for Boston nor would it be. I was right. No sooner was it warned, than it weakened upon approach to the city.

Fast forward a few minutes to TV time. In the living room I had my
RadarScope rolling. I could see that the storm was greatly weakened,
and then there was a flare up. Many nearby lightning strikes (still no where near
severe storm levels. No wind either). The cool thing was that radascope, with
the upgrade, DISPLAYS LIGHTNING STRIKES superimposed over the radar echo
display. I could readily see the nearby strikes, 6 in all. AWESOME!!!!

IF YOU ARE ON THIS BLOG AND HAVE A MOBILE DEVICE THIS APP IS A MUST!!!!!

    1. I am so very happy that you have me using this. I have been for a while now but after your suggestion yesterday, it is even better.

Now for the question. I’m not sure how to superimpose the lightning. I was going to ask you about this yesterday

      1. Ok, here goes.

Notice the little menu icon on the top left of the screen display?
It will be 3 horizontal white lines.

CLICK on that and it will open up a menu.

Just tap on Lightning and then you will get the lightning display.

As you will see, you can get warnings, see cities and highways. whatever you want to choose.

I have lightning, cities and hghways so I can see exactly
where the action is. It is easy to get it too cluttered.

Here are a couple of screen shots.

          1. Hmmm, It’s a shame that the IOS version
            is different. I HATE APPLE!!!!!

I do not know what to tell you.
Try their help screen. Notify their support.
Try every icon/option you can find. It must
            be in there somewhere.

On my android version, as you can see, there is
a nice menu ICON on the top left.

So sorry you are having trouble. You paid for the
upgrade and deserve to see this option.

            1. Since I have llightning displayed, it is entirely possible I missed it last night. I was watching three radar displays 😉 I’ll check closely next time.

              Thank you, JPD.

      1. I’m going to add this to my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. $9.99.

I checked to see if there was a PC version for Windows and it looks like there is but the vendor/developer is different plus it’s $29.99 through the Windows store. Not sure if really want it for that price on my desktops.

        1. Keith-Hingham,

Since you have a Samsung, we need to get
you a copy of the WHW weather app.

I’m at the office, so I can’t post you a link.
In fact, I’d rather not post a link on the blog.

If you give TK permission, he can email me
you email address and I’ll send to you.

That is if you would like. 😀

            1. Excellent.

The APP is in perfect working order.
It gets the job done and is packed with more than you could ever want. It is literally your own personal mobile weather lab.

I am working on making the presentation look a little more professional. I think you will see what I mean.

Here is a current screen shot of the opening screen with Boston as the selected city:

  4. I wish there was a tidal guage on the bay side in either Truro or Welfleet right about now.

Severe tstorms with radar indicated 60 mph wind gusts have traversed the whole width of Cape Cod Bay.

Wonder if a small surge is arriving with these storms on the Bayside. Also, it’s just about high tide.

  5. Thanks TK.

JPDave… I can’t agree strongly enough. RadarScope is the best weather app in the world today, and it’s not close. Amazing value for the price.

    1. WxWatcher….Please see my post above regarding the Windows Version…Do you know if it’s the same package?

      1. Hi Keith, I believe it is the same package, but I don’t have it on my PC, which is a Windows. I would definitely recommend it on a mobile device first.

  6. Those storms on the Cape mean serious business. Severe t-storm warning just issued for part of the Outer Cape. Stronger than anything from yesterday.

  7. Question for TK, I been looking at the GFS and the new one on tropicaltidbits (FV3-GFS model) it seems to me that the temperatures are cooler on the FV3 than the operational, is that something you also see?

    1. I saw the special marine warning. The box is not far in color from Tornado warning so it caught my attention quickly. You were right about those storms meaning business, Tom.

  8. Hyannis dew point 79.

This summer reminds me a lot of some of the brutal summers in the 1980s.

    1. Exactly I posted I think this week or last week this was an old fashioned Summer the kind I remember as a kid growing up in Marshfield in the 80s hot summer & snowy winters seemed to be the rule. I hate winter so this works

      1. Not a big winter person either. I’d much rather have 6 month summers than 6 month winters. 90 with a dew point of 70 is much more tolerable imo than 10 degrees with a 0 dew point. Ik not everyone will agree. I guess what I’m saying for the winter haters is enjoy until about October 1st bc it goes downhill from there.

      2. I like both, I could do 6 months of 85+ with a mix of dry and humid heat, then snow and cold for the rest. 😛

        1. I also like both and whatever is in between. Life is far too short as it is to wait for the next season. Might not be there when it arrives so may as well enjoy the ones you have.

      3. The 80s were not too great for snow overall but there were a few memorable storms scattered through the decade. But overall it was a lean snow decade, which completely reversed itself in the 1990s, one of the snowiest 10 year periods we have around here.

        1. We have movies of the kids in snow banks well taller than they are. Mac went off the roof a few times cleaning it…..amusing all of us. It was a ranch. 1984 has a great March. But I’m not sure I recall the later 80s. I had three kids by then so my head was spinning most of the time. Guess that is where the looking at the big picture comes in.

  9. I was chatting with my brother in law (Mac’s twin) who said that CA is literally on fire. He said the worst fire in history before the Carr fire was last January – which is smack in the middle of their rainy season. Of the ten worst fires in CA history two were in 1999, four have occurred since 2003, and five of the ten worst have been in the last 18 months.

      1. It is crazy. I had seen that photo as well as a couple of others. Is your grandparents place all right?

  10. Should we be concerned about flood potential this weekend into early next week? Looking at the 12z models, most of them show an axis of very heavy rain setting up somewhere in the region from the coming setup.

  11. Absolutely pouring in Sudbury now. A little wind but no thunder/lightning, at this point, anyway. Nothing like last night. Husband said thunder last night sounded like cannonballs! Thunder was pretty constant at that time, too. Sun starting to come out but still raining – sky looks awesome! Blue sky and mixture of gray and white cumulus clouds.

      1. Would have loved to send it your way, but just looked at radar and it looks like it stayed north. Sun out strongly now – opened window. STILL hot and muggy.

    1. Wow – intereseting, Marjie.

Thunder and lightning was intense and constant here early morning also. It was also a very long event.

      1. And after storm left last night (very slowly, mind you) an hr. or so later we had more thunder but not as bad. Nice thing about this shower just now – pine trees in our yard have lots of droplets and the sun is reflecting on them. They are sparkling in different colors. Christmas in August! 🙂

        1. Wish I could take picture – still don’t have smartphone – trying to find a good deal. My cell doesn’t take good pix.

        2. I love your description of the trees.

We had a storm at 9:30ish and then again around 2:30ish in the morning. Both were wonderful, old time, New England thunderstorms. Neither warned and both very enjoyable.

  12. Not sure if anyone else saw this but this is what the NWS has for their zone forecast for Boston (and a lot of other eastern MA areas too) for Saturday.

.SATURDAY…Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers. Much
cooler. Near steady temperature in the mid 60s. East winds 5 to
    10 mph.

  13. Regarding the brutal 80s summers. 1982, though not a super hot summer by temperature standards, had some bouts of insane humidity. Worcester reached an 81 dewpoint one afternoon. I believe that humidity-wise that was the most sultry day I have ever experienced. I’ll have to look up the date (because I don’t remember it) to make sure I have this right.

    1. I bet Canadian highs paid us a visit every now and then. No word from Canada since back in June.

      1. We pretty much never heard from Canada for the entire Summer of 1983 except a couple Chinook dry surges with intense heat. And the brutal 1983 summer lasted right through September 2 when Boston hit 99 twice (September 11 & 20).

        1. I seem to recall 1988 being the same but then 1989 not so much. I think we’ve always had hot and not as hot summers. 1981 was more like winter in June.

          1. 1988’s heat was more confined to the period from about July 5 to August 15, but there were a whole lot of humid 90+ degree days in that stretch.

              1. I do also. Most memorably, we have a picture of Mac in the kiddie pool (maybe 5 inches deep and 6 feet in diameter) with all three kids. That was the year I vowed we would not have a summer without a pool. We joined Framingham CC the next year – golf for Mac and an absolutely unused pool for us!

  14. TK you got my attention when you said I have concerns about the upcoming setup especially Monday and Tuesday. I look forward to hearing your thoughts as we get closer.

    1. There will be a lot to work out, but my initial concern has to do with a combination of warm/humid surface air, colder air aloft, and surface trough / front series. However that center of low pressure will play a big role. If it doesn’t end up heading west and opening up over land it will probably keep a more stable air mass over the region.

  15. Bizarre story. See link below. A met office’s intercom in Maryland broadcast messages in Chinese:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2018/08/08/rogue-message-in-chinese-broadcast-over-intercom-at-national-weather-service-federal-center/?utm_term=.77825a39a2f9

If instead of the message heard in Chinese over the intercom – “you have a package from Amazon at the Chinese Embassy, press 1 for more details” – the met office employees had heard the words 龍捲風 即將來臨 or Lóngjuǎnfēng Jíjiāng láilínor, which means “tornado imminent,” this story would have had even more significance.

  16. Well a lot of South Coast folks were saying how it’s been a lame t-storm season. I think today made up for that quite a bit…

  17. Ah yes, for the record, when I mention “South Coast”, this refers to Cape Cod westward through the coasts of RI & CT. “South Shore” refers to the eastern shore of MA between Boston and Cape Cod.

    1. We have a couple in Sutton. One that has a hurt paw has been around for a few years. I would love to see one

  18. the front is through, but as per usual, the lower dew points are lagging behind.
Dp at Windsor Locks, CT is down to 57. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
    Bring it here!!!!

Facata Logan has yet another sea breeze. I think since March, the prevailing wind direction at the Cesspool is EAST!!!

    1. That would be because they are located feet from the North Atlantic. 😉 If the wind is light, and the land is warm, they are going to sea breeze. 🙂

  19. Pats are down 7-0 in the first quarter of the first pre-season game. Oh well. They suck. Season over!

    😉

  20. I’m actually watching the Red Sox. Pats preseason games are pretty useless. Actually, all NFL preseason games anymore are pretty useless.
I’m actually kind of down on the pats. Oh don’t get me wrong. I’ll still be there every Sunday. But honestly Brady’s act is getting a bit old. So is the coach. Should have kept Jimmy and let Tommy boy ride off into the sunset. Now that jimmys gone, Brady has no pressure on him and he’s kinda being an ass.

  21. I don’t mind Brady’s act or the soap opera with the Pats. I think it’s kinda funny, and I think Brady does too. It won’t affect anyone’s performance. Of more concern is that this is probably the least talented roster the Pats have taken into a new season in 15 years. They’re going to struggle the first month or two, and it will be a matter of whether they can adjust as they did last year.

      1. Aren’t all qbs? Starts in high school or earlier and never stops. I’ll leave it there before I go off the deep end.

        1. I’ll go you one better. Aren’t all greats. If they are not single minded and have confidence if takes they won’t be greats. But G was not a team player. That is an unforgivable error.

    1. Agree. I think they could have kept certain players and they didn’t. I don’t think they’ve spent to the cap yet, and yet they let a number of valuable players go some of whom they could have signed.

They’re so thin at wide receiver that I think that will put Brady at risk of injury. I say that because none of the current group except Edelman is particularly good at getting open. Brady may get sacked a ton this year. Decker’s lost at least 2 steps. I’m doubtful he’ll even make the team. Hogan’s lost a step. Britt’s always injured. Dorset can’t hold on to the ball. There’s no Cooks, who was a legitimate deep threat with speed and separation. There’s no Amendola, who was almost as good as Edelman at getting open and catching balls in tight spaces. There’s no outlet in Lewis. Gronk can only do so much, and if teams don’t have to worry about the rest they’ll harass him.

And on defense the team is seriously undermanned.

All this said, they’re well coached and somehow Belichick et al. will likely put a competitive team on the field starting in September.

      1. And there is the age old question. Would Brady have been as great without BB. Would BB have been as great without Brady. Which came first 😉 😉 😉

    1. Yeah, that’s what I say about the humid weather. At least it’s just weather. I’ll get over it.

  22. They’ll still be at least 10-6, at least I hope so. I just don’t ha e a good feel fro what they’re going to do. They could do what they usually do, it something gnaws at me in the back of my mind that says this is a .500 team. God I hope not.
I actually think the front 7 on defense will be better.

    1. Bad game. It happens.
I’m more concerned about the bull pen. They’ll score runs, but man that bull pen is rough.

Mookie only needs a home run to hit for the cycle.

  23. The pats do what the pats do, They came back to win it, Never out. This is also preseason. This game shows that the pats have a running game, we have a decent front 7, defense was flying for a preseason game. There are two receivers. Gillissee is in trouble.

    1. Defense was terrible in the first half against some skins starters. Colt McCoy carved them up. Pats will be fine but not sure they will dominate with the talent they have on defense. Linebackers looked slow to start against an average Skins team.

      1. In all honesty it would be a shame for any pats fan to find fault with a team that has given him or her year after year of amazing football. If it’s another teams turn, well…..thank you to my team.
