DAYS 1-5 (MAY 8-12)
A low-amplitude upper level trough will swing through our region today into Saturday. Surface high pressure keeps our weather mostly dry initially today but the colder air aloft will trigger diurnal cloud development later this morning through this afternoon, and some of these clouds can grow enough to produce some convective shower activity, so keep an eye out for a spot passing shower here and there. This activity wanes toward sunset and these clouds decrease this evening, but at the same time we’ll see high cloudiness start to fan in from the west ahead of another disturbance sliding our way. This one passes by the region on Saturday with a period of rain mainly in the afternoon to early evening hours. Timing-wise, there is not a lot of change to what I said yesterday, with rain expected to arrive well southwest of Boston by late morning and reach the NH Seacoast region by early or mid afternoon, so the further north and east you are the more “dry time” you get in the early part of the day before it gets wet. Saturday night, the main rain area exits, but a passing trough can trigger an additional shower, maybe even a thunderstorm in a few locations. Coverage would be low on this, but any area that saw one could have briefly heavy rain. This leads to a much nicer and warmer day on Sunday with a west to southwest air flow. There will still be some chilly air aloft so I don’t expect full sunshine, but a mix of sun and clouds, and a few of the latter can build enough to release a pop-up shower, but coverage would be very low, so I wouldn’t cancel any outdoor plans – just keep an eye on the sky during the afternoon and early evening. The active pattern we’re in sends another wave of low pressure our way for some rainy weather on Monday, before we clear again for Tuesday, with a trend to cooler conditions early next week as well, in response to another upper low moving in from the west.
TODAY: Sunny start, then a sun / cloud mix with a slight chance of a passing shower mid to late afternoon. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy early evening, mostly clear late evening, then increasing high clouds overnight. Lows 38-45. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Overcast thickens. Rain arrives southwest to northeast mid morning through early afternoon, continuing thereafter. Highs 57-64. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain early, then clearing. Patchy fog. Lows 47-54. Wind variable to SW up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny. A pop-up shower possible. Highs 66-73 except cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 48-55. Wind S to SE up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Cloudy. Rain likely. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Rain ends. Clearing overnight. Lows 40-47. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Sun / cloud mix. Highs 57-64. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (MAY 13-17)
Early to mid period fair weather with a brief milder trend. Later-period unsettled weather potential with low pressure trough in the region, with a return to cooler conditions.
DAYS 11-15 (MAY 18-22)
Similar pattern expected with early to mid period fair weather and later-period unsettled weather returning. Temperatures start on the cooler side then trend milder.
Good morning and thank you TK
49 here up from low of 44
Ocean: 48
WORDLE: 4
a really tough word this morning in my opinion, anyway.
Not only was today’s wordle tough, it was a very cool and interesting word.
Then, a extra superb job this morning, JpDave, with that 4 !!
I don’t know about that. Let’s wait and see if we have any 2s or 3s today. 🙂
4 as well. Agree, tough word!
Nice
Wow. Excellent 4s to you both.
I stopped after 3 to wait till this am. I pretty much literally didn’t sleep night before. I’m enjoying :roll; my first bout of sciatica and by 12:30 hoped I was tired enough to sleep. Other than a couple of bathroom breaks, I just woke up. Woo Hoo.
Ocean was briefly up to 50 yesterday. We’re slowly getting there. We have come up 10 degrees in about 6 or 7 weeks. Very slow process to be sure
Thanks TK !
Through 4 guesses, I have very little. I’m going to pause and finish up later after my first 2 classes.
Nice weather start to the morning.
Paraphrase from WBZ radio anchor:
“High temperature today quite a bit lower than what we typically see with today topping out in the lower 60s.”
Average high for May 8: 63.
Nice try.
I told you it was a tough one, BUT you’ll kick yourself when you see it.
Are these people complete IDIOTS???? Do they even have a brain?????
Are we headed for an over achiever in the temperature dept????
I am already up to 61 here and it isn’t even 9AM.
I am impressed. That May sun angle is doing its job.
Logan is 54. Now I am wondering if I might be catching a bit of sun on my sensor. It is in the shade, but as the sun angle increases, it is “possible” it catches a few rays sometime in the AM? And that would be the ONLY time it could possibly cach any rays. Otherwise impossible.
Now down to 58 here. I think I had some brief sun on the sensor. 🙂
Thank you TK!
Hanging onto the caboose for dear life. Very lucky to have made it. Great job to the ones who solved in 4!
You made the train. Welcome aboard!
Good job Sue. You got it
After three guesses in Wordle I was struggling to think of any possibility. My fourth guess was silly, but it gave me enough to get it on guess 5.
Nice. I was racking my brain on this one. My 1st guess got me the correct letter in position 2. I looked at that and said what the hell word has that as the 2nd letter???????? I had to guess words that couldn’t possibly be the word just to get some more letters.
After the 3rd guess, I had enough ammo to solve the puzzle.
fun word today.
Nice 5. Sounds as if Tom and I might finish together.
Thank you, TK. 52 up from a low of 37
I’m aghast after seeing the word, which I did not get.
Its a word I know and I just didn’t see it.
Oh well, onto tomorrow. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Congrats to above who have gotten it.
Sorry Tom.
While the weather pattern is not my favorite, I would like ridging in the east from now until Columbus Day Weekend 🙂 …..
The blocking in the Atlantic and the persistent upper low over Hudson Bay, has relatively speaking, significantly moderated the temps in northern Canada and all around Hudson Bay.
Only a couple of weeks ago, there were still plenty of sub zero temps on the northern half of Hudson Bay and north of that in Nunavut.
This morning, the temps are 30-32F around all of Hudson Bay and in the teens and 20s in Nunavut.
Looks like a cool stretch to come locally the next 10 to maybe 14 days, but, with northern Canada moderating, I have hope maybe for some mildness/warmth around Memorial Day weekend and hopefully consistent 70s as we start the first week of June.
Just keep moderating the cold source regions and melting snow/ice well to our north.
I can live with 60s until June, Just not 50s and 40s!!!!!
Me too and I know the avg high is in the 60s at Logan until sometime around or just after Memorial Day, so any other expectation is not a great one. But, my want for warmer spring weather always takes over.
Logan’s high is 72 by Month’s end.
Well I thought it was. I found this
https://weatherspark.com/m/26197/5/Average-Weather-in-May-in-Boston-Massachusetts-United-States
Yes, agreed. Just over 70F by a bit !
Oh believe me, whenever it is that last week, if were in the 60s or colder and the avg high is 70F or higher, I will be complaining, lol !!!! 🙂
I’ll be right with you!!!
And I’ll go the other way when it is 90+ with 70+ dew points!!!!!
For summer weather, I have ordered Mid 80s each day with dew points in the low to mid 50s.
NOTHING else will do. Not asking for much, eh?
Still 58 here.
Thanks TK
The seasonal lag and how efficient the earth is at balancing things out, to our benefit, does amaze me.
On May 29th, we hit 15 hrs of sunlight (there’s probably 16 hrs of daylight) and Boston’s max sun angle is 69.3 degrees at solar noon. Not only that, the sun is 60 degrees or higher in the sky for 3 and 1/2 hrs, from 11am to 2:30 pm and the avg high temp is a measly 70F.
This is a good thing, as July would be 100F if not for the delayed warmup and seasonal lag.
But, as a person, who by now feels they have been cool or cold since last November, waiting for 70F until late May sometimes feels eternal.
Tom, it was just 70+ 3 days in succession. 🙂 🙂
It was, but I mean consistently.
Not 70F today and I don’t think many of the next 23 days are bound to be.
But, you are correct and I thoroughly enjoyed them !!
Never in May. Never!
Well said Tom! Completely agree.
Thanks.
59 now.
DING DING DING Made 60. WOW!!!!
Same just now.
61
A week from today, next Friday, there’s a lot going on for us and probably many other families across the country that really would be helped by good weather.
Next Friday, our eldest graduates from Bridgewater State and her ceremony is at the Xfinity center.
At the same time, our youngest is headed to a prom.
So, my wife, two daughters and others are asking about NEXT Friday’s weather.
My response has been, “we’ll start talking next Tuesday !!!!!” 🙂
To that end, yesterday’s 12z GFS was wet and the 12z Euro dry for next Friday.
Today, its the opposite.
From today, I might as well throw a dart against a dart board that has dry and rainy on it and see where it lands.
Good luck. Hope it is NICE weather!!!!
I finally got it. I did the same thing SClarke did with fourth guess. It narrowed placement of one letter and, as with SClarke, gave me a letter I
Needed.
Wordle 5
Yay !!
Good job. Very tricky word today.
Thank you both. Sure is one of the trickier ones
We’re at 61 and seems to be a pretty common number across Eastern SNE. Looks like this might be it for today, unless we can creep up 1 more degree.
Nice batch of rain just moved through Dartmouth.
57 down from our high of 60
We briefly made 62, but highly likely it was 61.5 or 61.6 🙂
61.2 now.
Some showers slipping by just South of here.
Trend for the Saturday system is less rain.
Trend for the Monday threat is graze / miss.
