Wednesday May 6 2026 Forecast (6:39AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 6-10)

The surge of warm air that came in early this week remains with us for part of today, but along with a lot of cloudiness and eventual showers as a cold front approaches from the west. Two waves of low pressure ripple up along this frontal boundary, the first slowing its approach initially. Showers occur as the front nears and crosses the region, particularly this afternoon and tonight. There’s a slight chance of a few thunderstorms as well. The second low pressure wave will slow the front’s offshore departure, allowing for another round of showers early Thursday, particularly from the I-95 belt eastward, favoring southeastern MA. Later Thursday, a clearing trend begins and I expect fair, cooler weather ending that day and Friday. Friday’s weather will feature a fair amount of sun but the development of some fair-weather clouds too. This weekend, a broad trough of low pressure enters the Northeast. Timing right now suggests that a wave of low pressure will bring the chance of some wet weather to our region Saturday afternoon or night, but there is the chance that this system can slip further south and be more of a miss. Monitoring guidance trends on that. For now, I expect Sunday to be a fair and milder day.

TODAY: Most sun early, otherwise considerably cloudy. Afternoon showers and the slight chance of a thunderstorm arriving west to east. Highs 67-74 except 60-67 South Coast to MA South Shore / Cape Ann. Wind S 10-20 MPH, gusts as high as 30 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely, especially in the evening. Patchy fog. Lows 50-57. Wind SW to variable up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of morning showers, especially I-95 eastward. Highs 60-67. Wind variable to N 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 42-49. Wind N to NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 38-45. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Potential for rain favoring the afternoon and southern areas. Highs 58-65. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain early, then clearing. Patchy fog. Lows 47-54. Wind variable to SW up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 66-73 except cooler South Coast / Cape Cod. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 11-15)

Low pressure passing by the region brings a rain chance May 11 followed by mid period fair weather, before unsettled weather chances return at the end of the period. Temperatures near to below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 16-20)

Overall dry pattern but on the cooler side.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK

    60 after low of 59

Ocean: 47. I thought that with the strong sw winds that we might see some upwelling to cool the water temperature. I guess it is already cool enough. Perhaps this only occurs when the surface temperature is considerably warmer.

    I’LL set my over/under atc70.
    We shall see.

Spc has us in an area of general thunderstorms. Time will tell.

    Wordle: 5

  2. I have to rethink my wordle time. I keep falling asleep in my chair. Rather than just going to bed when I finally wake up (between 1:30 and 2;30ish), I oddly play Wordle then. It’s gotten me another 6

    🙄

    1. you made the train!!! Perhaps try in the morning after a cup of coffee????

      1. Thank you, JpD. I have played at midnight for years. Habits are hard for me to break. But you’re right. Tea and Wordle in the morning sounds better. And I need two new starter words. I’m not going anywhere with the ones I am using

        Great scores today from everyone

        1. My starter words have been useless the last 2 weeks!!!!
I wish there were a magic started word, but it ALL depends on what the Wordle word is. The best starter word possible could very well be useless.

          1. True. I try to cover all vowels. It’s the consonants that I can’t quite figure to add.

My go to starter words have been terrific for years. But not now

  3. I heard on the tv news this morning that Denver could have a “Top-10” snowstorm today.

I suppose snow in May isn’t as unusual as it is here in the northeast.

  4. Philip .. To clarify about Denver.
Top 10 snowstorm for May, not for all time.

    Total snow was 5.8 inches.

  5. I feel like Denver this year has had more snow in the spring than they did during the winter.

    1. That’s normal for them.

      March is their snowiest month.
April is their second snowiest month.
      December ranks third.

Snowiest times in many mountain areas in the West are late autumn and early spring. They have a dip in snowfall during the winter.

  6. Denver long term averages for snowfall by month, for the “snow year” which begins July 1 and ends June 30.

    July: 0.0
    August: Trace
    September: 1.0
    October: 4.1
    November: 7.3
    December: 8.0
    January: 6.5
    February: 7.7
    March: 11.4
    April: 8.8
    May: 2.5
    June: Trace

As I have often mentioned about that part of the country, the snowiest time is late autumn, and again in spring, with a lull in snowfall during the heart of winter. This is normal.

  7. Estes Park CO seems to be the jackpot with 31 inches of snow from this event.

    1. Nor is it expected.

SAK and I both adopted the long time rule of thumb: “When in drought, leave it out”, as taught to us by our excellent mentors.

  8. In case anyone missed it, WKRP is now a real radio station in Cincinnati OH, simulcasting on 2 other frequencies besides the long-time one now rebranded by the station. It covers 3 states in the area and plays hits of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. It streams online for free. I will become a fairly frequent listener. 🙂

The station went on the air as its new identity at 6:00 a.m. Monday May 4, introduced by the theme song from the iconic TV show that used those call letters in its title. 🙂

      1. Turkeys can fly, albeit very short distances. They have been known to fly on rooftops of houses to roost overnight. I’ve seen it happen.

I’m somewhat surprised that there haven’t been any crazy turkey sightings this spring, especially from Brookline.

        1. I think it’s a reference to WKRP. But took me a bit to remember

I believe wild turkeys can fly short distances. Domestic cannot

          1. A few years ago I was walking near a cemetery with a high fence around it, maybe 8 feet. Two turkeys approached the fence from the outside and one hopped and fluttered over the fence. The other one went into an absolute panic. It ran back and forth along the outside of the fence – again and again. I had to stop to watch. After about five minutes of this, it finally seemed to remember that it was blessed with the gift of flight and flopped over the fence to join its mate.

  9. TK – Where does that 5.8” rank for May for Denver?

Actually on May 9-10, 1977 some locations in SNE had A LOT more.

    1. There was at least one location in CO today that topped 30 inches (Estes Park).

      Top May snowstorms for Denver…
      May 1-5, 1898: 15.5″
      May 13-14, 1912: 12.4″
      May 5-6, 1978: 12.4″
      May 25-26, 1950: 10.7″
      May 15-16, 1957: 8.8″
      May 17, 1983: 7.1″
      May 6, 2026: 5.8″

    1. At season’s end they will sit right around (or just over .500).
