Friday Forecast

7:17AM

DAYS 1-5 (NOVEMBER 6-10)…
Unseasonable warmth and humidity today ahead of a cold front along with a variety of clouds. Some record high temperature will likely fall today. Boston’s record high of 73 may be eclipsed by 1 or 2 degrees as I expect them to reach 74 or 75. Only a few isolated rain showers this evening mark the passage of the cold front as it moves west to east across southeastern New England, and only slowly settles off to the southeast on Saturday, which will be cooler and much less humid. But you’ll have to wait another day for a more seasonable November chill as the coolest air will not arrive until Sunday. By the start of next week, high pressure will have crested overhead Monday then moved offshore Tuesday with a new warm-up underway. Some moisture may increase during Tuesday bringing cloudiness and eventually some risk of wet weather by night, though the evolution and movement of that possible disturbance is still very much in question this far in advance.
TODAY: Variably cloudy including some sunshine. Highs 65-70 South Coast, 71-76 elsewhere. Humid. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with gusts as high as 30 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A passing evening rain shower possible. Lows 50-55. Lowering humidity. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts, shifting to W.
SATURDAY: Limited sun at times morning with variable high and some middle clouds especially southeastern MA and RI, then trending sunnier afternoon. Highs 60-65. Wind W 10-20 MPH and gusty.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Clearing overnight. Lows 35-40 interior, 40-45 coast. Wind NW 5-15 MPH and gusty.
SUNDAY: Sunny. Highs 48-55, coolest interior higher elevations. Wind NW to N 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Sunny. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s.
TUESDAY: Increasing clouds. Possible rain at night. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 60s.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 11-15)…
Fair weather returns November 11 with mild air. Unsettled weather possible with clouds returning November 12 and a chance of some wet weather November 13, possibly lingering into November 14 before fair weather returns late in the period with a possible brief shot of colder air.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 16-20)…
The general pattern will continue to favor an overall mild/dry regime but with a couple quick unsettled events and brief cooler shots, depending on timing of systems.

DAYS 1-5 (NOVEMBER 5-9)…
High pressure slips offshore allowing a warmer southwest flow today and Friday, though some cloudiness will be around at times due to increasing moisture i the air as well as a weak disturbance passing through tonight and a cold front approaching later Friday. Either of these may produce brief rain showers but no widespread rain is expected. After the front passes Friday night, a cooling trend will take place this weekend with dry weather, though some cloudiness may linger for a time especially from the Boston area to Cape Cod on Saturday. By Sunday and Monday, high pressure will be building overhead again with more clear sky and great November weather, though not as warm as the recent and current stretch.
TODAY: Mostly to partly sunny. Highs upper 60s to middle 70s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

Snow Contest

Please post in the Contest section which can be found by going to the home page of the blog.

Give your best guess on total snowfall for the season for any or all of the following cities:
Boston MA
Worcester MA
Providence RI
Hartford CT (taken at Bradley, north of the city)

Bonus question: What date will the first 1 inch snowfall occur at Boston’s Logan Airport?

You do not need to guess all of the cities if you do not want to.

Deadline for guesses is 6PM Sunday November 15 and later that night a list will be compiled for each city as well as the bonus question.

This is for fun though you are allowed to put as much scientific thought into your guesses are you are capable of. Be nice! Good luck!

Tuesday Forecast

7:29AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 27-31)…
The final 5 days of October. We start with a dry and cool one today and follow that with a cloudy and eventually wet and breezy Wednesday (most rain at night) as a broad low pressure area tracks west of the region but drags some of the moisture that was associated with Pacific Hurricane Patricia last week up with it. This will produce some beneficial, but not drought-breaking, rainfall. A cold front sweeps it all offshore by early Thursday but the day itself will be quite mild as we’ll have to wait for a secondary front to bring the chilly air back in for Friday, which will be a dry and breezy day. Things progress quickly enough so that Halloween on Saturday as a milder day but it looks like a dry one too.
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the 50s. Wind light variable becoming E to SE.
TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows in the 40s. Wind light SE.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain develop west to east in the afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind SE increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts by late in the day.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy with periods of rain and rain showers, heavy at times. Chance of thunder. Temperatures steady in the 50s may rise to the 60s overnight. Wind SE to S 15-25 MPH with higher gusts, potentially to 40 MPH or greater.
THURSDAY: Any showers end early otherwise sun and passing clouds. Highs around 70. Wind W 15-25 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 50s.

Rain showers possible late November 1 into November 2. Fair November 3. Rain showers possible early November 4. Fair November 5. Temperatures variable, averaging near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 6-10)…
Overall mainly dry weather. Temperatures near to above normal during the period.

Monday Forecast

7:14AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 26-30)…
As we progress through the last week of October we will see a pattern that produces a variety of weather, from a bright chill early in the week as Canadian high pressure dominates New England to a period of wet weather Wednesday as low pressure tracks northeastward through the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes and pushes a warm front toward southern New England. Some of the moisture from the former Hurricane Patricia from the Pacific ocean will be associated with this system, and the rain will be of some benefit for our area which is running a significant rainfall deficit for the year. This system moves right along and after we’re briefly in the warm sector of this system Wednesday night and early Thursday, a cold front will sweep through and dry the weather out during Thursday. Significant cooling will wait until a secondary front crosses the region Thursday night from the northwest, and Friday will turn out windy and much cooler with dry weather.
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 48-55. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 20s inland valleys, 30-35 elsewhere. Wind light N.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the 50s. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Rain likely. Lows in the 40s. Highs 55-65, mildest at night.
THURSDAY: A few early rain showers otherwise sun and clouds, windy. Lows in the 50s. Highs 65-75.
FRIDAY: Partly cloudy and windy. Lows in the 30s. Highs 45-55.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 4)…
Looks like a dry and chilly Halloween October 31. A couple low pressure systems bring the chance of some wet weather late November 1 into November 2 and again November 4, with timing somewhat uncertain.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 5-9)…
Mostly dry weather. Temperatures near to below normal.

Sunday Forecast

8:10AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 25-29)…
Cold front moves through the region this morning and early afternoon with a band of rain showers. Improving weather from west to east during the afternoon as the front pushes offshore. High pressure builds in tonight through Monday and Tuesday with fair and chilly weather. Low pressure approaches from the southwest Wednesday, pushing a warm front toward the region and causing a widespread rain to occur. Some of the moisture in this system will be from former Pacific Hurricane Patricia. As the low center takes a likely path northwest of the region we’ll enter the warm sector of this system briefly before its cold front sweeps through from west to east Thursday. At four days out, the timing of the front is not certain but at this stage I’m leaning toward a rapid movement of the system and an earlier passage with rain showers to start the day followed by improving but windy weather, initially mild then cooling. This will be fine-tuned.
TODAY: Mainly cloudy with showers progressing west to east across the region through early afternoon, ending lastly on Cape Cod. Breaking clouds later in the day. Highs around 60. Wind S 5-15 MPH shifting to W and increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows in the 30s except some lower 40s South Coast. Wind NW 5-15 MPH and gusty.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs around 50. Wind NW 10-20 MPH and gusty, shifting to N and diminishing.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 25-30 interior, 30-35 coast. Highs in the 50s.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Rain likely. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 50s.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy with showers early then partly cloudy. Lows around 50. Highs around 60.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 3)…
Fair and cooler October 30 then milder October 31. Unsettled weather possible November 1 into November 2 followed by fair and colder by the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 4-8)…
Unsettled weather early in the period then drier again. Temperatures near to below normal.

Saturday Forecast

6:36AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 24-28)…
High pressure centered to the north of the region will allow winds to turn more easterly today allowing some ocean cloudiness to move westward over southeastern NH and eastern MA as well as parts of RI at times. Cloudiness from an approaching cold front will arrive later in the day from the west as well. Overall though not a bad start to the weekend. Even Sunday won’t be a terrible day, just lots of cloudiness for the first 2/3 of it along with a chance of rain showers as the front moves through. Improvement starts later Sunday but this will also mark the arrival of a very cool air mass which will be around for the start of the week Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, low pressure will approach from the southwest, eventually leading to a chance of rain. Some of the moisture that was associated with Pacific Hurricane Patricia may be involved in the midweek rain threat.
TODAY: Variably cloudy. Highs in the 50s. Wind NE-E 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the 40s. Wind SE-S 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy through early afternoon with scattered rain showers then increasing sun west to east. Highs around 60. Wind S to SW increasing to 10-20 MPH then shifting to W from west to east.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 25-35. Highs 45-55.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 25-35. Highs in the 50s.
WEDNESDAY: Increasing clouds. Chance of rain afternoon and night. Lows 35-45. Highs in the 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 29-NOVEMBER 2)…
Low pressure likely passes northwest of the region Thursday October 29 with rain showers and milder air. Windy/colder Friday October 30. Fair and cool Saturday October 31. Watching for another low pressure and frontal system with potential unsettled weather part of November 1-2.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 3-7)…
Drier/cooler early period, milder with unsettled weather later in the period.
