DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 25-29)…
High pressure centered to the northwest of New England today will slide across the region tonight and then drop to the south on Monday. The upper level pattern will be reconfiguring itself during this period and will begin to present a ridge off the East Coast and trough that tries to close off an upper low to the west of New England by the middle of next week. There are differing solutions on major forecast models as to what will happen with this closed off system. Some guidance takes it eastward giving the chance of rain to southern New England around next Thursday-Friday while other guidance holds it back to the west and never really brings the rain chance in. A case can be made for either scenario or anything in between, and in the interest of consistency for today I’m going to pretty much carry a similar forecast to yesterday, and revisit this “issue” going forward to try to fine tune the outlook. So understand that today’s outlook is up with a little less confidence that what I might consider average confidence for my own forecasting.

Weather systems may not move much during this time with low pressure held to the southwest by a ridge of high pressure centered just east of New England. This would result in mainly fair and mild weather much of the period with a rain risk later in the period as system tried to move eastward somewhat.
DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 5-9)…
Will keep an eye on the tropics to the south as at least remnant moisture may be involved in a system that arrives from the south and west about the middle of the period, preceded by warm weather and followed by cooler/drier weather. Very low confidence in this portion of the forecast as much can change.
DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 24-28)…
High pressure sits to the northwest of New England this weekend and delivers a cool northerly air flow for the first weekend of autumn. This high sinks down over the region Sunday night providing a solid opportunity for the first frost of the season over prone locations. High pressure will gradually sink off to the southeast by later Monday allowing a cold front to move through from the west during Tuesday. This will be followed by drying westerly flow by Wednesday as broad low pressure hangs back over the Great Lakes and nearby Canada.

Pattern should place high pressure off the East Coast and low pressure in the Midwest and this will bring a couple of opportunities for rain during this period. Will have to watch for the addition of tropical moisture should a system far to the south get involved.
DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 23-27)…
Cold front crosses the region today and this evening with lots of clouds and the threat of showers and a few thunderstorms. Cooler northerly flow overtakes the region for the weekend as high pressure centers itself north northwest of New England. This high should drop down over the region by Monday and Tuesday with fair weather, a couple very cool mornings, but milder afternoons especially by Tuesday.

High pressure will dominate today with another summer-feeling day for the first day of autumn. A cold front will drop through the region Friday but have limited moisture to work with, minimizing the shower threat. High pressure north of the region will send a cooler northerly fair flow in for the weekend and early next week.

High pressure builds in and as the last day of summer today leads to the first day of autumn tomorrow, it will continue to feel like summer. The fall feel will have to wait for a cold front, which will not arrive until later Friday. This front will have limited moisture to work with and therefore, the threat of any showers or thunderstorms with it will be limited as well. Over the weekend, a cool and dry air mass will arrive from eastern Canada, and the first full weekend of autumn will feel quite seasonable if not a bit chilly to some.

One front dissipates along the New England South Coast today while a second one pushes eastward across the region. The latter will bring drier air be tonight but before that it will be a fairly humid day with fog and clouds to start, a few showers in southeastern MA, and then a clearing trend. High pressure dominates with fair and warm weather for midweek. A cold front approaches Friday, another warm day, with a chance of showers late. This front may be slow to exit initially on Saturday which may hold onto clouds after an early shower threat ends, but will be cooler.

The idea has been for a front to slowly make its way southeastward across southern New England through today, and it’s moving so slowly it will actually take until early Tuesday to complete this process. This front provides an avenue for moisture and resultant showers as well as a risk of thunderstorms. Fair and warm weather returns during Tuesday and the rest of the period will feature continued fair weather with some ups and downs, but mostly ups, on the temperatures.

A slow-moving front with weak waves of low pressure on it will take the next 2 days to cross the region with opportunities for showers, favoring areas west and north of Boston today then anywhere tonight and Monday. Still not looking like a widespread beneficial rainfall, but some scattered locations may receive some decent rain. High pressure regains control of the weather Tuesday through midweek.

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 17-21)…
High pressure offshore to the east of the region today will send a southerly air flow into the region allowing it to warm up and become slightly more humid. The humidity will become more noticeable later tonight and Sunday as a cold front approaches, bringing lots of clouds and then risk of isolated showers at first. A general area of showers and possible thunderstorms may stay well to the west and northwest of Boston for much of the day then run out of fuel as the front finally comes through the Boston/Providence areas. The front doesn’t get too far southeast after that and allows additional moisture to come up through the region into Monday. The question is whether or not beneficial rain occurs during this time. Much of that may end up staying offshore to the southeast, but the jury is still out on this. High pressure takes over the weather again for the final two days of astronomical summer on September 20-21, with the warmest day being Tuesday followed by some cooling on Wednesday after a cold font goes through with little or no fanfare.

Timing of systems is a little uncertain during this period but the best call for now is a quick warm-up on September 22, a dry cold front early on September 23 with a cooler day as high pressure tries to move in but stays mostly to the north, then the previous front being an avenue for some cloudiness and perhaps a touch of light rain about September 24 or early September 25 before being pushed back to the south by high pressure and fair weather to end the period.

1 or 2 rain chances during this period but the overall pattern will still be fairly mild to warm compared to normal.
DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 16-20)…
Long term pattern remains drier and warmer than normal but this 5-day period will feature some variable temperatures and risk of some rain. Now don’t go expecting a drought-breaking rainfall. The deficit is significant and you would not want to make it all up at once, or we’d have extreme flooding. There is a risk of some beneficial rain before the end of this 5-day period, but the benefit may be limited if the source of tropical moisture does not deliver. The source? Tropical Depression/Storm Julia, which will not directly move up this way, but may have some of its moisture tapped by an trough coming in from the west and reaching New England during Sunday into Monday. Before that, high pressure dominates today into Saturday with fair weather, and after it, a fair and warm day is expected next Tuesday.

A cold front likely moves through in the early hours of September 21 making it a cooler but dry day. Quick warm-up September 22 with dry weather. A shower possibly early September 23 with the next front which brings slight cooling again that day. The weekend of September 24-25 is uncertain but there may be a rain risk at some point as we enter a 2 week period of better rain chances.

High pressure will bring pleasant weather through Friday. The weekend will start ok with fair weather, some increasing clouds, and a warm-up Saturday after a cool start. Sunday will be an unsettled day as a cold front slowly moves through, producing lots of clouds and scattered showers. Some cloudiness and a risk of a shower lingers Monday as the front never completely makes it through and falls apart over the region.

A brief shot of September heat and humidity today will be cut off at the pass by a cold front, which during its afternoon passage will produce some showers and thunderstorms, a few of which may be strong. Keep a close eye on the weather today. Not expecting widespread severe storms but any storm may produce strong and possibly damaging wind. After this gets out of here by evening, it’s back to cooler and dry weather for Thursday and Friday followed by a slight warm-up Saturday. This will lead to the next shower threat on Sunday as the next cold front arrives.

High pressure sinks south of New England today with sunshine and warming air. It briefly heats up and gets a little more humid Wednesday ahead of a cold front, which accompanied by a shower or thunderstorm, will put a quick end to the warm up and introduce a shot of cooler and drier air for Thursday and Friday as high pressure moves back in. This high begins to drop to the south allowing Saturday to warm up a little more after a cool start.

Behind that front, a new high pressure area brings a shot of refreshing air from Canada for late week.

A cold front moving across the area will produce a broken to solid line of showers and thunderstorms from west to east from mid morning to early afternoon for a period of about 15 to 30 minutes as it goes by. The line may produce downpours, strong and gusty winds, and some lightning. Timing should break down about like this…

Around 9AM: Connecticut Valley area.
Around 10AM: Central MA to central CT and southwestern NH.
Around 11AM: Southeastern NH including Seacoast, Worcester to western suburbs of Boston, northeastern CT to northwestern RI.

Around 1PM: Southeastern MA to lower Cape Cod.
Around 2PM: Outer Cape Cod.
Once this front has cleared the area, the weather will be much improved to end the day and then high pressure will take over for early in the week with fair weather. A cold front brings the next shower threat on Wednesday followed by a push of cooler/drier air and a bit of a fall feel by Thursday.
