The Week Ahead

3:12AM

The upcoming week will be rather quiet across southeastern New England. Clouds will hang on in eastern areas for a while Monday morning as low pressure departs to the east. High pressure will be in control for much of the week, with the coolest weather early into mid week and the mildest toward week’s end. Only a slight interruption will take place Tuesday night as a moisture-starved frontal system whips across the region with some clouds.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Low from the middle 20s inland valleys to middle 30s coast. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. High 53-58. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

    1. Hadi does $3,500. Sound like alot for three people to cruise to Bermuda in July. That price includes insurance. Inside cabin.

  1. Today’s equivalent sun declination and length of day is about Sept. 8th. So, by next weekend, its about Sept 1st – 3rd or about Labor Day Weekend equivalence.

    1. Tom I love that you post this information. My husband was saying yesterday that it is getting somewhat light when he gets to work in the morning. He still takes the dog out in the dark but it won’t be long before it’s light then too.

      1. Thanks Vicki. I noticed this morning, that even with the clouds and light rain, it was brightening a bit at 6am.

  2. Being back on my computer where it is a bit easier to search than on the iPad, I did some looking into the definition of blizzard. Both Hadi and I copied and pasted the NOAA definition of blizzard which did not include any temperature factors. I found what I thought was an old Weather Channel definition of blizzard which did include a temperature factor. Interestingly, it turns out not to be old and the Weather Channels’ current definition – online – for blizzard is what I pasted last night and does include temperature.

So who do you go by? I’m thinking NOAA but I can sure see where the confusion is.

  3. Vicki , Thanks for taking the time . As I said yesterday that I would defer to those that would know or know where to find the info . I just remembered that being talked about with the 97 storm !!!! So ????was it or not a blizzard ??? Question of the day !!!

    1. Temp was part of the criteria around 25 yrs ago but changes bc it was dumb kinda like the old nfl overtime rule 🙂

      1. I remember that too Charlie but it seems odd that weather channel still has it defined that way on its Web site.

    2. No problem – I tend to get a bit overly focused when it comes to digging into things since I also remembered temp at one time being a factor but hadn’t heard it for a while.

  4. I remember having the discussion after the april fools “blizzard” as to whether or not it was a true blizzard. In my mind, it wasn’t, even though it was technically classified as one. I don’t think a temp criteria is stupid at all as temp has an effect on many things during a snow storm. The lower the temp, the drier the snow, thus making it lighter and easier to blow around making visibility even more of an issue. Also, the lower the temp, the more important of a factor the winds become in terms of wind chill. IIRC, temps were marginal at best during that storm. Yes the winds were strong for a time and within blizzard criteria, but the winds did not create a dangerous wind chill. Due to marginal temps, the wet nature of the snow prevented blowing and drifting thus the only reduction in visibility was due to the intensely falling snow. Not taking anything away from that storm, but I think in the last 25 years or so, the term blizzard has been widely overused and sometimes used to sensationalize what were definately strong snow storms but sounded better being called a blizzard. Just my opinion.

    1. I agree with u to a point but in many ways but I’ve experienced blizzards and experienced the April fools storm and the April fools storm was worse in many ways, anybody can call it whatever they want it’s all opinion, have a great day 🙂

  5. The temps were marginal during the April Fools Storm which is why it was a heavy wet snow.
When I think of a blizzard temperature is not an important factor. To me a blizzard is when you have blowing and drifting of snow for a couple of hours greatly reducing visiblity and making travel near impossible.

  6. I agree w/ you JJ…the main criteria for a blizzard has always been reduction in visibility due to blowing and drifting of snow. Snow doesn’t even have to be falling from the sky or be that heavy to trigger a ground blizzard. You frequently see blizzard warnings go up in Alaska just by virtue of having high winds and a small amount of snow on the ground.

I also agree with Acemaster that the term blizzard is way overused. If we get a big accumulation from a storm, people just start referring to it as a blizzard regardless of wind impacts. NWS sometimes goes a bit overboard with the blizzard warnings as well. I can think of several occasions where interior areas have been under blizzard warnings but actual blizzard conditions were only realized on the coast where winds speeds were higher.

And to Kirbet and Vicki, you are absolutely right about temps previously being a criteria. I have an old TWC Weather Guide calendar from the 80’s (one of the first issued) that had a page describing blizzard criteria and temps below 20 were a factor. I believe the 1997 storm did meet current blizzard criteria for many (particularly coastal areas where the winds were higher) but not everyone.

    1. AceMaster GREAT points. I think I also tend to agree with your comments from the affect of temp to the overuse of the term, Blizzard. JJ that is not to discount your comments since I believe they are as valid.

Mark, the definition using temp as a factor seems to still exist as far as the weather channel is concerned since it’s on their Web site. Odd that there is such a discrepancy in definition.

Kirbet – thanks for starting the discussion – it’s a great one!

      1. The best way of putting it is that cold temps are often “associated” with a blizzard but are not a “requirement” for a blizzard. Blizzard designations (watches and warnings) are issued by the NWS, so their definition technically governs.

        1. Hi Mark that definitely answers my question and is what I suspected – so NOAA is the definition to go by which does not include temperature even though at one point temp was a determining factor. Thanks

  7. We way overuse the Blizzard term, but if you are rating it the storm it was technicaly a blizzard.

    1. same thing here, rainshine – huge, white, billowy clouds now but to the west they look a bit more gray.

      1. The sky is very picturesque today. Patches of blue amidst white, gray and even yellowish. If it was warmer and more humid out and the conditions were right – bet we would be having some thundershowers!

        1. I’m enjoying watching it as I work – I have a row of fosythia just outside my window and look up through their vibrant yellow to the sky – lovely day 🙂

  8. Next chance of rain is Tuesday, gfs says maybe an inch of rain but until then seasonably mild and mostly sunny with temps around 60 degrees for most but cooler along the coast, but the sun will feel warm 🙂

  9. Now that winter is behind us I think it’s time to really reflect on the winter of 2011-12, it was like no winter I’ve ever experienced here in the almost 40 yrs of living in sne, any thoughts??

    1. And it’s crazy cause the 2 trees in the backyard r full of red buds, and these trees didn’t lose there leaves until just before thanksgiving, this is only 4 months that the trees were bare, along with snowfall of under 10 inches along with seeing people in convertibles 4 and 5 times through winter and to just have winter quietly vanish and have the start of spring to be no big deal, again some crazy stuff 🙂

      1. Wow – good point Charlie about trees losing leaves late and then getting them early. My son never took his motorcycle off the road for winter. Of course, one of winters perks for me is that he can’t ride it since it makes me a wreck.

    2. It’s one of the many things i love about living here. The unpredictability of the weather keeps us honest, keeps us on our toes. As much as I disliked this winter for its historic abnormalities or just simply weirdness, I wouldnt trade our weather for anything.

      1. I agree AceMaster. On the whole – even though there wasn’t snow and I do love the storms – the unpredictably warm weather made it interesting. Like you I love our climate!

  10. I think its time to make this a log-in site. Rude comment was made about on of our bloggers here. Just my opinion.

      1. I reported the comment. If it is not deleted, then at least I did the best I could.

I know absolutely nothing about websites, but I doubt that TK would be able to prevent anyone from reading our comments. I am just grateful that the trolls can’t post here which was my greatest concern when I first came on board. This site would be absolutely horrific if that were to happen.

        1. I don’t see anything so maybe it’s gone. The trolls are taking over kellers blog too. BZ really needs to change its procedures

            1. I don’t go over bz anymore. My smart phone for some reason wont let me read that section. And this phone is what I have been using for my computer.

              1. John the iPhone wont let me read blogs either. Must be something BZ did. Go figure. They block people with smart phones and let the trolls in. No wonder I watch 7

  11. One word to describe the winter of 2011-12 if you are a snowlover like me DUD!
As I said a few months ago I think next winter still below normal in snowfall but closer to normal.

    1. My early thoughts exactly, Jimmy!

      My early, early call for 2012-13 = 33″ 🙂

I have a feeling that we will be facing some rather lean years ahead for snowfall before we get back to normal and above. 🙁

  12. There is a fire watch out for certain zones in our area. How do we know what zone we are in?

        1. Some interesting obs around the region, while the wind is fairly steady inland, it’s quite light along the coast with some component off the ocean. This is bringing in some low level moisture, so coastal dewpoints are near 30F.

Everytime a cloud covers the sun, it feels very cold.

  13. Fire Weather Watches up for a good chunk of SNE. I would not be surprised if those are upgraded to red flag warnings.

  14. We think he Will.my wife started setting it up today. I guess at his age 8 all the kids have them. He is unbelievable on the computer. We can’t wait to give it to him. Will be tough till than.

    1. You’ll laugh when I say we gave both grandkids the iTouch when they were two. There are toddler apps that are amazingly educational. My 4 yr old grandson has learned every state in the US and can put them in place by name and by shape. Same with planets. You will find tons of apps for your son. Google best apps for his age

      1. The one thing we were hoping he would get on it was club penguin, that’s his favorite site. But can’t do it. He will still need to do that on the computer.

        1. I don’t know what that is. There is a puffle launch for iTouch. I know he’ll like it no matter what. Great gift. Not many more days for you to wait 🙂

  15. The rude comment over on the WBZ blog was directed towards Vicki by name. There have been comments by trolls about our conversations from time to time recently but not by name up until today which is the main reason I reported it. I am glad that it was removed quickly.

Vicki, I am sorry that you can’t read certain things on the WBZ site via your smartPhone, but in this case it is just as well. The comments towards you were absolutely rude to say the least. Thanks Coastal for posting your concerns and giving us all a head’s up. 🙂

    1. I have a few who don’t like me on the BZ blogs. I’m not surprised. I dont know what I said to offend. I look to you all for weather knowledge. Small minds live on those blogs although I saw the name on the one today who knows who I am and has an ax to grind and suspected it may have been at me since I’ve not seen the name of that person on weather before. Thank you coastal. Thank you philip

    2. Philip I can see them on my computer but assume the comment was removed since I couldn’t find it

    1. Can you tell what the zone numbers are for Boston and Quincy? It looks like either 5 or 19…?

      Thanks!

  16. Other than reading the on air metereologist blogs, the WBZ blog is a waste of time. Not even worth going over there to read the posts. When we start talking about their comments here, the trolls know they are getting our attention, and they continue to post more harrassing comments. If they are just ignored, they will lose interest and stop.
