DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 24-28)

Summer “ends” several times per year these days. It’s marked by the end of meteorological summer, the end of summer vacation and return to school, Labor Day, or the actual end, referred to as the autumnal equinox. Well, the last of those is still a few weeks away, the penultimate one of my list is two weeks out, the return to school is scattered across the calendar so you can figure that one out, and the last day of meteorological summer is one week away. So for this five-day forecast, we’re still talking about summer. And we’ll have some summery weather to go along with it, although we will lack significant heat and humidity, and will still have to deal with some unsettled weather, but to a lesser degree than we did over the weekend. The frontal boundary that brought that to us is now offshore, but the upper low driving the pattern still has to cross our region, and won’t completely accomplish that journey until later Tuesday. This sets up the chance of an afternoon to early evening shower and thunderstorm chance today, and an additional opportunity for a late-day shower Tuesday, with such activity more likely west and north of Boston than anywhere else in our region. High pressure builds in to provide beautiful weather for Wednesday before it heads offshore. The next trough and front will head our way later Thursday into early Friday, bringing another shot at some shower and thunderstorm activity, though most of Thursday will be rain-free and probably the warmest day of this week (in case you happen to have beach plans, like I do!). A frontal boundary in the region can still trigger an afternoon shower or thunderstorm on Friday after the morning shower threat ends, but that day will be decent too for a good amount of its time.

TODAY: Patchy low clouds / fog to start, then plenty of sun through midday before a variably cloudy afternoon when there is the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially west of I-95. Highs 76-83. Dew point 60s coastal plain, 50s hills to west, with a slow decline during the day. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 57-64. Dew point falls under 55. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. A shower possible west of I-95 late-day. Highs 75-82. Dew point under 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 56-63. Dew point under 55. Wind W under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85. Dew point heads for 60. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Fog patches. Lows 60-67. Dew point near 60. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. A late-day shower or thunderstorm possible mainly western areas. Highs 80-87. Dew point around 60. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers with possible thunderstorms. Areas of fog. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind SW to variable up to 10 MPH

FRIDAY: Lots of clouds, patchy fog, and a shower threat early. A sun / cloud mix follows with the chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. Highs 78-85. Dew point 60+ but may fall later in the day. Wind SW to W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 29 – SEPTEMBER 2)

Decent summer weather to wrap up August except for a shower / t-storm chance sometime August 30. Shower chances increase to open up September. Temperatures near normal.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 3-7)

Fair weather early period. Shower chances return mid to late period. Temperatures near normal.

    Wordle: 6. Phew. Thought I had it 4, but there were too many choices, so I didn’t get it until the 6th guess. Oh I got zilch with 1st guess. Oh well.

    Played bid whist last night with friends. Interesting game.
    This couple always beat us?.Until I realized last time that they were bullying us. No matter what we bid, they out bid us and would almost always make their bid whether they had a hand or not. Similar to bullies at the poker table. Once we caught on we changed how we played and got very aggressive. This couple has been playing for 100 years while we are pure novices. We held our own and won 1 game out of 3 and won many hands in the games we lost. Interesting game.

    1. Sounds like tons of fun. My pre-Mac boyfriend, his parents and I played whist well into the night when we were at their place in Rangeley. I miss cards.

    Wordle in 4. Had letters 1,2, and 5 after 3rd try, so there were limited options.

  12. Over the weekend, the sky looked more like November than August. GLOOMY doesn’t begin to describe it. Beautiful blue skies today though! 🙂

    I heard on the radio this morning that Lawrence schools begin today and someone told me that Brockton began last week. A number of other schools begin this week as well.

    What is the sudden rush to open schools these days? It’s no wonder the “back to school” ads start up after the July 4th holiday.

    I’m glad I came up when I did when schools began a couple days or so after Labor Day. Even that was too soon for me. 😉

    If I had my way, schools in the south wouldn’t start up again until the first week in October.

    1. I’ve never liked starting before Labor Day either, but the alternative is to go away late into the summer and that’s worse I think. Although I agree with you, I don’t think we need 180 days.

      Many towns recognize the Jewish holidays. Back when I was in school it bothered me when we sang all Christmas carols and nothing for Hanukkah. BELMONT had a large Jewish population and all it seemed unfair.

    Alas, my trusty Oregon Scientific thermometer gave out last week. I had that thing for ages through all sorts of extreme weather.

    I do not believe Oregon Scientific, the company, exists anymore.

  18. Philip… Brockton goes back after labor day, so that someone was quite incorrect. 🙂

    I always check official calendars or whatever the information is related to because I find a lot of people give incorrect information these days.

    Woburn’s first day is split across two days… September 8 and 9.

      1. Thanks TK! I was talking with the front desk people here at my facility this morning and I mentioned about Lawrence starting today and one of them told me that Brockton began last week. I didn’t ask how he got that (incorrect) information about Brockton. It’s probably going to be a matter of time that most schools start in August eventually.
