Rain Punch

9:50PM

The cold front that barely made it through the region Wednesday is sitting just southeast of New England and on Thursday served as a lifting ramp for warm air trying to come back into the region but riding up over a wedge of cooler air near the surface. This created clouds and eventually rain that moved into the region. A wave of low pressure on the front will bring a stronger punch of rain overnight and early Friday, especially to eastern areas. Rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 1.50 inch additional are expected through Friday morning, with some areas of Cape Cod probably seeing greater than 1.50 inch. As low pressure crosses Cape Cod and then moves northward into Maine during Friday, the rain will taper off but clouds will be stubborn. But by Saturday, the clouds will have departed and the nasty weather will be replaced by a very nice summer day. This will not last, as a cold front approaching from the west will return clouds and eventually showers and thunderstorms to southeastern New England from west to east on Sunday. Showers will linger Monday as the front slowly moves offshore. A couple of nice summer days are expected Tuesday-Wednesday next week as high pressure takes control.

  1. Thanks TK !

Managed about 57F today, at least according to the truck. Amazing fog formations last night, very low to the ground, where the hills above were somehow visible and yet, we couldnt see maybe 15ft in front of us on the beach.

  2. Radar looking blah, and 00z NAM just rolled into the station with little fanfare. Latest HRRR has additional .5″-1″ for eastern mass with 1-3″ on the Cape. Models as of late have really been poor.

    1. They sure have. Might have to tweak the discussion up there and basically cut it in half.

  3. This really was a good punch of rain. Odd little summer nor’easter. We needed the rain though.

So evidently, the roofing company that’s redoing my gutters didn’t pay any attention to the weather. They started the job early yesterday morning. I figured they would finish before the rains came. Boy was I wrong. I came home yesterday during that batch of torrential rain to find NO gutter over the garage, and the rest of the new gutters had no downspouts. Water was just flowing through the holes and pooling around the foundation. Get to the basement and sure as heck, flooded. First crisis as a new homeowner, not fun 🙁

      1. There wasn’t too much damage, the water came into an unfinished area thankfully, but did get a couple feet of the carpet and soaked the bottom inch or 2 of the woodwork at the bottom of a doorway. I’ve been trying to call the company since last night but no one has returned my calls.

  4. A couple of comments on this absolutely miserable morning:

    1. How could it possibly be this COLD in July?????????????????????????
This is insanity. I was out yesterday afternoon in the deluge and the temperature
    was 60!!!!!!!!! Yes 60!!!
    2. Advertised big rain event for last night was pretty much a no-show.
    3. Dorian is destined to fall apart, either by crashing into Hispaniola or totally
    dissipating.
    4. The “Severe” weather for Sunday mentioned by the NWS days ago will NOT
    happen. 😀
    5. Our Company Outing for today was postponed due to the “Rain”.

    Well that’s enough for starters.

    What a PUTRID Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Hehe. On the other side of the coin as there are always two sides……I love days like these at the beach. We were able to be on the deck nearly all day yesterday and until 10 last night. The waves are great. Walking in the rain is fun. And it’s great sleeping weather. 🙂

  5. We had a record low maximum high yesterday where the records for inland CT are kept at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks. It felt like an October day here yesterday and has that feel so far today.
I am liking what I see with Dorian as it looks like the same thing that happened to Chantal will happen to Dorian.

  6. Today is one of those days u ask yourself why do we live here? Who wants it to rain for 48hrs straight in July when u can get the same amount of rain from a brief thunderstorm but rains the same amount in a few hours, frustrating

      1. I’ve tell my little ones every time it rains that its good for the grass and trees so everytime it rains and i say out loud ugh its raining they say its good for the grass and trees lol 🙂

  7. I’m at Gillette, there are some people outside Gillette with a big Texas Flag an American Flag and a Patriots Flag and there tailgating waiting for Patriots Training camp to start. Should be fun today 🙂

  8. What’s really amazing how just a few days ago the temp. outside was in the upper 90’s and look at the temps. today. Midsummer and suddenly it feels like late Oct. or even early Nov.

  9. I don’t like the cloudy rainy weather but I will take it over the heat and humidity anytime. Its nice to be saving some money on the electric bill.

    1. I almost had to turn the HEAT on last night, it was so Bleepity bleep bleep cold in the house!!!!!

      Where is 82 and dry??????????????????????????????????

      1. OS…I was thinking the same thing. Can’t we just get a couple days that are low eighties and dry!?!?!? But….then we would have nothing to complain about. 🙂

  10. We go from temperatures approaching the 100 degree mark in some areas last week and yesterday we can’t get out of the 60s for high temperatures.

  11. Great morning at Gillette, bc of the rain only 8-9,000 people, but this weekend will be busy, I’ll be here both days with the family, Brady looked like Brady, and the team looked good for the 1st practice everyone together 🙂

  12. Waves are breaking about 10 feet from deck. Edge of ocean about 4 ft from deck and we have about 20 min till high tide and it usually rises for a while after. I love this.

      1. Thanks we are.

My SIL won’t be able to take time from his new job to go to pats camp with his son. I was telling him how much you enjoy it.

  13. SO sleepy today! Love the title of this one TK. It feels like a punch…a punch of tiredness.

Looking forward to the great beach weather tomorrow! 😀

  14. Next Friday’s weather map may look nearly identical to this morning’s over most of the country, per ECMWF.

  15. Soooo the rain that was going away this afternoon….do we think it will now hang into tomorrow or are we still thinking it’ll be a good beach day?

    1. Hi Vicki…it’s already clearing out in the central part of the state and hear the rain is ending with a beautiful red sky showing up just to the west

        1. I was just in deck and think I see a sliver of sunset thru the clouds. And Mother Nature does like to mess with us doesn’t she.

Drive thru norwell today and thought of you.

  16. WOW!!!

Did anyone see that MOST AWESOME RAINBOW this evening???
    Absolutely spectacular!!!

We could see it in Dorchester and then Quincy. Full, vibrant and complete with a faint double. Only wish I had a camera with me. My cell phone sucks at photos.

    😀

    1. We had one the other night but there was no sun today. Got lots of pics tho

I think mrs OS must be feeling better??? I hope

    2. Yes, saw it …. In the 12th hour of being on the road, we saw it looking eastbound while on Rt. 128. Home now.

Rained all day long, but absolutely poured in eastern Maine, up to Bangor. Water galore up there, waterfalls everywhere in the rocks on the roadside.

    1. Off and on showers any time. But if we get lucky some areas could see several rain-free hours especially middle of the day.

    1. Thanks Vicki, it was ! It may have been the best vacation ever ….. This isnt meant to sound unappreciative of the long vacation, but I think I’m stunned to be home.

      1. I remember a few times returning home and stopping dead in my tracks as soon as I walked in the front door because I just wanted to go back to the vacation. I always love going home but when a vacation is especially perfect it is very hard to have it end.
