Warmer, Then Wetter, Then Windier

4:39PM

The mild pattern goes on, with no snow in sight. There is some rain in sight however, in the form of showers tonight as the leading edge of warmer air moves in, and a more widespread rainfall Thursday night into Friday as a stronger low pressure area moves into New England. Behind this storm expect a very windy start to the weekend as it dries out.

The Week Ahead

4:12PM

Another week, more of the same pattern. No need to really go into much explanation, as it is just a repeat of previous. The overall pattern will continue to feature milder than normal temperatures and no significant winter storms. The early part of the week will feature fair weather, with a tendency for a more unsettled middle and end to the week. Details will be hard to pin down regarding cloud cover and timing of any precipitation, due to a fast-flowing jet stream, so check back for daily updates.

Saturday Evening Update

5:43PM

A potent but small disturbance will cross southern New England this evening with rain and snow showers, becoming mainly snow showers as it turns a little colder. Expect minor accumulation of snow at best, but snow could fall heavily in a few locations for brief periods of time, along  with gusty winds (snow squalls). This would have the capability of making roads slick for a very brief time, before quick melting due to warm ground.

High pressure will dominate with dry and chilly weather Sunday-Monday as a storm passes well south of New England. The next warm-up begins Tuesday and lasts for much of the week, along with a return to some unsettled weather at times, but no major storms.

Boston Area Forecast…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with scattered to numerous rain and snow showers trending to just snow showers with time, along with isolated heavier snow squalls, ending by 1:00AM. Clearing overnight. Low 25-30. Wind W 10-15 MPH with higher gusts, shifting to NW.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High 38-43. Wind NW 10-15 MPH with higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Low 19-24. Wind NW 10-15 MPH with higher gusts.

MONDAY – PRESIDENTS DAY: Sunny. High 35-40. Wind NNW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 22. High 46.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 36. High 51.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Low 39. High 47.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Low 36. High 44.

Winter? What Winter?

3:22PM

Well, it may not be true that we’ve seen no winter at all, but it sure has been easy compared to last year. Hints coming here and there, but they never linger. One such hint may come on Saturday night, with some snow showers as a disturbance comes along in the northern jet stream. And that northern jet stream is key to a storm missing us well to the south on Sunday. It is not going to link up with the southern jet stream, which will be carrying that storm well south of New England, leaving us with a fair and chilly middle and end of the Presidents Day Weekend.

Looking into next week, it looks like another mild one, with some eventual unsettled weather, more likely in the form of rain than snow, sometime around midweek.

Boston Area Forecast…

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 20-25. Wind NNW 10-20 MPH.

Not Biting

3:03AM

No doubt you’re already hearing talk of a possible weekend storm. Though there is some evidence of this even for this area, I’m not biting yet. The only change to the previous forecast is to introduce more cloud cover for Sunday as the storm passes south of the region. No other changes at this time to the previous discussion and forecast.

Winter’s Vacation

9:47PM

Another outlook with no major storms. A few days of very mild temperatures dominate through Friday. One weakening low pressure system passing by the region today and a second slightly stronger low tracking over New England and redeveloping just to the south Thursday night and early Friday will be about all the weather action that will take place. A cooler, quiet Presidents Day Weekend is expected as another storm passes south of New England.

THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 32-37 tonight & Wednesday night. High 43-48 Wednesday. Wind light variable.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. High 41-46. Wind NNE 5-10 MPH shifting to SE.

Brief Chill Exits, Mild Days Ahead, Late Week Rain

3:38PM

A chilly and breezy Monday is winding down and now it’s time to talk about what it upcoming for the next 7 days,  including the Presidents Day Weekend (February 18-20).

For the model-followers, I am basing this forecast largely on the ECMWF today. The GFS looks “confused” starting at about day 3.

A milder southwesterly flow will become established on Tuesday then becoming very weak on Wednesday as a weak disturbance passes over and just south of southern New England. This system will not be worth more than a few very light snow or rain showers early Wednesday. High pressure north of the region on Thursday should provide enough dry air for at least some sun as another low pressure area organizes to the southwest of New England. This system will send a primary low pressure area into the Great Lakes Thursday night and Friday which will redevelop just south of New England Friday, but there will be too much warm air in place for any snow in southern New England (though northern New England, especially the mountains of NH and a good  portion of central and northern Maine may see some significant snow from the low pressure system). The low should be lifting away by early Saturday as drier and cooler air starts to flow into New England behind it, setting us up for a largely dry and somewhat chilly (but not too cold) Presidents Day Weekend. A low pressure area over the southeastern US at that time should sail out to sea well south of New England.

The Week Ahead

4:16PM

The quiet winter of 2011-2012 goes on. We’re looking at another rather benign week with no major cold and and no major storms. The cold blast of Sunday (which wasn’t even really that severe anyway) lingers early Monday in the form of a very cold morning, but temperatures will recover to freezing or a little above during the course of the day. Mild temperatures dominate the rest of the week with high temperatures at or over 40 pretty much daily. The only weather systems to look at will be a weak frontal system moving through late Tuesday and a weak to moderate low pressure area expected around Friday. It should be warm enough with both of these systems so any precipitation will likely be in the form of rain in the Boston area.

Quick Cold, Then Return To Mild, No Major Storms

4:07PM

A brief shot of modified Arctic air will come in tonight and last through early Monday. Now by normal standards, this air mass is not that extreme, but it will feel pretty cold in comparison to many of our days this winter. But as has been typical, it will not last, as the mild pattern will return Tuesday and beyond.
