So we are relegated to my aching joints to forecast the weather?? Oh boy! I wish our so-called president had a brain in his head, but ALAS the man is BRAIN DEAD!!!!!
Saw this last night. From Tony Pann, meteorologist Baltimore.
“Ok. I guess I have to address this. The information on your phone app comes FROM data provided by NOAA for free. NOAA gathers weather data (daily balloon launches) and feeds it into the modeling so your phone can tell you it’s going to rain tomorrow. Saying we don’t need NOAA or the NWS because I can see the weather on my phone, is like saying we don’t need farmers because I can just go to the grocery store. End of rant. Just in: NOAA cuts hit home for New England. First, Western Alaska ceased launching weather balloons – now, Albany NY & Portland ME. Weather balloons are critical to sampling the atmosphere from bottom to top and the data goes directly into the computer models. Following the closure of Chatham’s site due to beach erosion, this now leaves only Caribou ME here in New England, and Long Island + Buffalo in New York. As our Matt Noyes put it: “Lots of folks, lots of atmosphere in between.”
