Thursday August 20 2026 Forecast (7:29AM)

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 20-24)

A frontal boundary moves through our region today then settles just to the southeast Friday through the weekend. At the same time a broader trough of low pressure will move into the Northeast via the Midwest and Great Lakes and take through Monday to entirely cross our region. What this means is that the next 5 days will be unsettled, even though we start out with plenty of sunshine in the region today. What this doesn’t mean is that we see rain most of the time, although we can see some significant rainfall for portions of the region, depending on a set of details and how they take place. A little uncertainty with these can lead to quick-needed forecast adjustments as we move through this period of time, but here’s my current best shot on how I think it’ll play out. Today, as the front moves through, we see clouds move in as it passes by as a weak low pressure wave travels along it, and this brings us some generally light rainfall this evening / tonight. This first wave has been shown by some guidance to slow down and take its time moving by the region on Friday, being a focus for some heavier shower activity when acted on by limited sunshine. If this occurs, the greatest chance is in eastern CT, RI, and southeastern MA. A follow-up wave has been shown by guidance to take a range of tracks, some right over the region, some further southeast, some slower, some faster. My leaning is for a wave that brings the best shot of rain to southeastern MA, RI, and eastern CT later Friday to midday Saturday, with less of a chance to the north and northwest. When we get to Sunday and Monday, I suspect we’ll see a pattern of more scattered shower and possible thunderstorm activity with a bit more established southerly air flow in the region, along with a bit warmer and more noticeably humid air.

TODAY: Sun followed by clouds. Light rain chances increase later in the day especially south and west of Boston. Highs 77-84. Dew point 60+. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Light rain at times. Patchy fog forms. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Shower chances shift mainly I-95 belt southeastward, with a few heavier showers and t-storms possible. Highs 75-82. Dew point around 60. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Fog patches. Showers most likely I-95 belt southeastward. Lows 60-67. Dew point 60+. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy start with greatest shower chances I-95 belt southeastward, then a sun / cloud mix with a pop-up shower possible. Highs 76-83. Dew point near 60. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 60-67. Dew point near 60. Wind S under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Afternoon pop-up showers and thunderstorms possible. Highs 78-85. Dew point in 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. A shower possible. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers possible. Chance of thunderstorms. Highs 78-85. Dew point in 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 25-29)

Watch for a couple disturbances and shower chances, but overall more dry times than wet ones. Temperatures near normal.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 30 – SEPTEMBER 3)

A couple disturbance may induce shower chances, but the pattern overall looks more dry than wet. Temperatures near normal.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

    Ocean: 71

Wordle: 4 A crazy 4 where I had zilch 1st guess, 1 out of position on 2nd guess and the same out of position letter in another position for guess 3. So for guess 4, I had 1 known letter (out of position) and 13 letters NOT in the word, including all vowels except 1. So I knew 2 letters in the word, but no idea of positions and it was impossible coming up with a word using those 2 letters and NOT using the letters already deemed NOT in the word. I dug deep and pulled a word out of my ass and it WAS the word. I am pleased with this 4, even though 4 is a rather mundane Wordle score. 🙂 🙂

    Happy Wordling

    1. Well done. I’m stuck after 4 guesses even with 3 letters in the correct position.

I don’t think if 4 as mundane. I suspect it is the average guess for most.

      1. I agree, 4 is certainly in the neighborhood of the average score. I still consider 4 somewhat Mundane. I am only truly satisfied with a 2 or a 3. I’ll grudgingly accept a 4, but am thoroughly disappointed in a 5 or a 6 and most especially a fail!!!!!

  2. My son experienced a dust storm last evening while out
in Scottsdale, AZ. I told him to bring a few masks with him for this exact reason, but I doubt he listened to me. 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. They are interesting. We were at Mac’s sisters house in Spokane years ago during an uncharacteristically hot spell. Mac, his parents and I were on the deck when everything got “cloudy”. We had no clue it was a dust storm or that we should go indoors.

  3. Thank you, TK. 68/63. We had a low of 61

Philip thank you for sharing the time of the Bridgewater game Saturday.

      1. It’s the only word I could come up with that didn’t use any of the failed letters. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Thanks

    1. I got it in 5. According to NYT, today’s puzzle averaged 5.5 guesses, I had 3 letters in correct position after 3rd try. 4 letters after 4.

    1. Great 5s to you both.

I used guess 5 to find more letters and it worked

      Wordle a PHEW 6

Not disappointed as I thought I was headed for a fail

      1. You got it. Only now after I see some scores, that I was MOST FORTUNATE to pull a 4 today!!!

        1. A friend on FB who is most often in the 2-3 range had a phew 6 too so I figured i was in trouble.

    1. Wow. Whw has not shifted left due to a long URL in ages. I thought it was fixed. Off to read

    2. That would be great if we could predict major blizzards within seasons before the season is underway.

      But, we can’t.

  4. Hosting 50 people for a barbecue this afternoon. Hoping storms come after 8.

Social media Hypers starting a folly about Dolly!

  5. Looks like ocean temperatures are reaching the highest point for this year 76.8 at the Block Island buoy.
I was in the ocean yesterday at the RI. South coast a bit of a chill when I initially stepped into the water after about five minutes it was very comfortable.

  6. https://radar.weather.gov/station/KOKX/standard

I’m struggling to get Norton NWS site to open, but I got Upton, NY NWS to open and that’s ok, cause the majority of action is down there.

I could be mistaken, but I feel as though they have had multiple, localized, heavy rain events down there this summer. Another one today.

    1. 0.55 inches of rain in 15 mins at Newark, Int’l airport.

Have to think that is causing delays there and that’s vital enough an airport to send ripple delays to other east coast airports.

  7. I heard on the tv local evening news that due to El Niño, it’s going to take longer for the fall foliage to get going especially from Boston south. Cool, if not chilly temperatures are required for the best foliage and El Niño doesn’t promote that. It’s going to take forever for the atmosphere to cool sufficiently during the fall months.

Even as early as last August around this same time, I noticed quite a bit of color around my immediate area already but this year all the trees are still as GREEN as ever. A tipoff for the upcoming season? The winter as well?

    1. I remember now. It was a segment on Ch. 4 just before Eric. One of those foliage “experts”.

    2. Accuweather fall outlook has a milder than avg northeast, I believe the graphic projects the northeast at 1-2F above average.

The weather channel just had September and it projects slightly above average temps for the northeast.

But remember, sept 1 avg temp in Boston is around 77F and I think it’s 68F by the 30th, so slightly above average if it verifies doesn’t mean hot and humid everyday. In July, somewhat, in September, no.

I don’t know if there is a correlation between how the trees foliage season behaves and the upcoming winter. My guess is there is not much of one. 🙂

    1. A few days ago one of our Mets was concerned about the possibility of a significant amount of rain here tomorrow. I haven’t heard an update so he may change his mind. Not giving names but for what it’s worth he’s really wrong. 😉

Again, it could’ve been updated between the time I saw it and now

  8. Looking at radar and seeing southern Queens and southern Long Island got smacked! Significant damage at the Atlantic Beach Club in Atlantic Beach in Southwest Nassau County. Meanwhile breeze has picked up significantly here but I got my barbecue in before the raindrops started. I have had this luck all summer. Amazing!

  9. Humidity has really dropped here – wonder if this will take the juice out of storms coming off eastern Long Island?
