Low pressure drifts slowly up the East Coast late Monday through Wednesday, cut-off from the main flow and slowly weakening with time, bringing unsettled weather along with it. The departure of these systems can be hard to time, but currently expecting it to do so during Thursday as a very weak system, bring replaced by a warmer southwesterly fair flow.

High pressure centered over the Canadian Maritime Provinces noses southward toward New England and continues to send an Atlantic air flow into the region today. Low pressure will move into the St. Lawrence Valley tonight into Thursday and send a front across southern New England which will then settle just to the south and provide an avenue for another wave of low pressure to come along on Friday. The front will never get that far away and a fairly cool north to northeast air flow is expected by the weekend as another high pressure area builds across eastern Canada. This type of weather pattern usually produces plenty of cloudiness, limited sun, and occasional wet weather in southern New England.

High pressure to the north of New England sends a northeasterly flow into southern New England today, which then shifts more southeasterly by Wednesday. Low pressure approaches from the west later Wednesday into Thursday but weakens during its passage over the region. A second, slightly stronger low comes along with its center probably passing just to the south of the region Friday and lingering offshore into Saturday. The trend is for cooler and eventually more unsettled weather with this pattern.
TODAY: Sun to start, then clouds moving in from the ocean (northeast to southwest) more solidly in the NH Seacoast and eastern MA coastal areas and less so further south and west. Highs 48-55 but may drop to the lower 40s eastern coastal areas later in the day. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.

A fabulous weather day, maybe a little warm for some runners of the Boston Marathon, but about as nice as one can expect for being a spectator of the great race, or being at Fenway for a Red Sox game, which hopefully they are able to win today. There are no weather issues for traffic around Boston but these factors, a work day for many, and a Bruins playoff game this evening will all combine to make it a crazy day getting around the city. At least the weather is not going to hamper that. Bringing us the nice weather is a high pressure area centered over eastern Canada, but this high that is our friend today may become a little less friendly especially for coastal areas by Tuesday as it moves in such a way to change the northwest wind to a northeast wind and this may bring in low clouds and possible drizzle. Additional moisture will be added through Wednesday as winds shift more to the east then southeast, and then we’ll add low pressure into the mix as a couple areas move out south of New England during Thursday and Friday adding wet weather at times under a more solid overcast.

Atypical? Nah. Today is quite representative of the warmer side of what we can see here at this time of year, as recently we saw some of the colder side, and within a few days we’ll be reminded of that chill once again. First we have a summerlike southwest wind today providing the very warm conditions, but a cold front, which may produce a shower or thunderstorm in a few locations this evening, will put an end to the top-end warm weather and knock it back to a “very mild” place for Monday, which may still be a bit warm for marathon runners, though they will enjoy a brisk tail (and slight cross) wind along the Boston Marathon route and will not be greeted by a chilling ocean wind this year. That wind will wait until Tuesday when high pressure orients itself in such a way to turn the wind northeast, and you’ll know it, especially near the coast. This high should hold enough and slip far enough southeast to turn wind more southeasterly to southerly by Wednesday but low pressure from the west will bring unsettled weather by later Wednesday and Thursday.

High pressure centered just to the west of the area brings a light northerly wind and clear, somewhat cool but pleasant air today, along with an afternoon sea breeze near the coast. Tonight, high pressure crests overhead with clear sky and calm wind promoting radiational cooling. Moderation gets underway Saturday after a chilly start as high pressure slips off to the east. A warm front brings the risk of some showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday night then leads in a taste of summer for Easter Sunday. A cold front then brings a risk of a shower or thunderstorm Sunday night and leads to a fair and pleasant Marathon Monday (Patriots Day). A secondary trough coming through Monday night will bring in cooler air for Tuesday as high pressure builds across the Great Lakes.

Taste of summer today but your typical cooler areas will continue on the South Coast and a weak sea breeze is also possible along the East Coast as the gradient wind will be a little weaker than it was Monday. But areas over the interior that don’t have an impact from the ocean air will see warmer readings in most cases than what took place on Monday. When we get to Wednesday a cold front will enter the region from the northwest and eventually exit via Cape Cod, but its journey through here will be good for the threat of showers and a few thunderstorms. Cooler weather arrives behind this front for Thursday and another disturbance may bring some cloudiness Thursday night and early Friday before high pressure builds in later Friday through early Saturday with more nice weather. A warm front approaching later Saturday will increase the cloudiness again and may lead to some wet weather at night.

And now the nicer weather pattern arrives, starting with a warmer west to southwest flow of air which will warm the region nicely, except the typically cooler South Coast, during the next few days. A weaker pressure gradient may leave the east coastal areas of MA and NH a little more vulnerable to a sea breeze on Tuesday. A weak cold front will knock the temperature back a little bit by Wednesday, which will be the only day with a rain shower threat, before a stronger front makes it cooler still by Thursday.
