Apologies for the abbreviated update again as I try to fit 2 days’ worth of errands into 1 day. 😉

SUMMARY…
High pressure builds overhead tonight and ends the breezy weather but allows it to be quite cool. Temperatures rebound nicely Thursday with lots of sun. Clouds arrive by later Friday as a warm front approaches. This front will be in the vicinity from Friday night through the weekend and be the avenue for a few disturbances which bring the threat of showers. It’ll be hard to time these threats but this forecast will give it my best shot for now and then adjustments will be made, if needed. A small high pressure area is expected to bring fair weather Monday followed by a frontal system with showers Tuesday.

SUMMARY…
The Summer preview dials itself back a bit this coming week. There will be several weather changes. The first is the replacement of the warm air Monday with cooler maritime air behind an advancing back-door cold front from northeast to southwest across southern NH and eastern MA. The leading edge of this may not make it all the way through RI and deeper into MA but the exact limit is not known and won’t be known until it takes place, so understand there may be a sharp temperature contrast in parts of the region Monday. The warm air makes another push back into the region from the southwest as the remains of Subtropical Storm Ana pass southeast of New England and a cold front moves in from the west. This day will hold a shower and thunderstorm threat. By Wednesday, the front will be moving offshore with drier and cooler air moving in, but enough cold air aloft will trigger the development of some diurnal cloudiness and perhaps a few showers. High pressure closer into the region should bring more dominant sun Thursday and Friday. The weekend is uncertain at this time and the weather will depend on the development and movement of some disturbances, so that part of the forecast comes with low confidence and is very subject to change.

The previous discussion holds generally true. There is one change to make, however, and that is to forecast a frontal boundary north of the region on Sunday to slip far enough south to position itself to become a back-door cold front that may invade southeastern NH and eastern MA sometime during Monday. Also, a little more detail can be added for Tuesday, regarding the track of Subtropical Storm Ana, or whatever remains of it, as it may be close enough to bring a period of rain to parts of southeastern MA and RI. The rest of the forecast is generally unchanged and will be updated with a full discussion on Sunday.

SUMMARY…
In came the back-door cold front Friday morning and the cool ocean air along with it over southeastern NH and eastern MA. It has taken longer for the front and somewhat cooler air to push further west away from the coast. In fact, as of mid afternoon Friday, the temperature ranged from near 50 along the eastern coast of MA to near 90 in Hartford CT. Though a difference of nearly 40 degrees over about 200 miles, this is not all that unusual an occurrence for this part of the country at this time of year. Now as we get into evening area of low clouds and fog are coming in from the ocean and this will become more widespread during the later evening and tonight as the marine layer becomes established. This low overcast and areas of fog will burn off in most areas Saturday as the wind turns more to the south, but this southerly wind off the water just south of New England means that the low clouds will be much slower to break along the South Coast and it may never completely clear there. Temperatures respond and warm up inland but less quickly along the coast. By Sunday, a southwesterly wind flow means warmer for most areas except still somewhat cooler along the South Coast and especially across Cape Cod. A frontal system to the north and west of the region is expected to cause showers/thunderstorms in northern New England but none of those will reach southern areas as it looks now, meaning that Mother’s Day will be rain-free across southeastern New England. By Monday, this front pushes a little closer with a slight risk of a spot shower or storm but overall most of the activity should still remain to the west and north. By Tuesday, finally the front swings through as it is kicked along by a disturbance from the west. At the same time, remnant moisture from the first named tropical system of the year, Ana, will be making a close pass though most of its moisture should remain offshore just to the southeast. By the middle of next week look for a return to somewhat cooler and drier weather, with a slow warm-up commencing by the end of the week as high pressure dominates.

SUMMARY…
Nothing about the weather in the next 7 days will be atypical of past Spring seasons in New England. High pressure brings sun and warmth today with some cooler conditions along the coastal areas, but this will become a much more pronounced cooling especially in eastern coastal areas and even inland somewhat during Friday afternoon when a back-door cold front arrives. The sunshine expected on Friday may be replaced by a low overcast at least in eastern coastal areas by late day or evening. That cool air may remain in place into Saturday before getting pushed away again by a returning west to southwest wind flow, which will strengthen through Sunday, Mother’s Day, bringing another preview of Summer. This continues Monday then comes to an end due to a cold front Tuesday and Wednesday. Some showers and thunderstorms are expected with this front, as early as later Monday, but more likely Tuesday. Any rain will be welcomed as top soils are dry and we also have elevated risk of brush fires across much of southern New England.

SUMMARY…
Your long awaited above normal temperature pattern has arrived and will last through the weekend. As is always the case in the Spring, there will be modifications based on locations. A weak cold front settled through southeastern New England Tuesday and a second weak boundary will try to sneak down the coast through Wednesday. At the same time a narrow area of high pressure will sink southward over the region and push a disturbance south of the region overnight and early Wednesday. Cloudiness with this disturbance will be over the region tonight but exit Wednesday morning, and the day turns out quite bright. Coolest air will be along the coast with some onshore wind while it is somewhat milder inland. By Thursday expect high pressure to be centered to the south with warmer air for most areas, the exception being the South Coast and Cape Cod. On Friday another area of high pressure will nose down over the water to the east, and allow for an onshore wind and somewhat cooler air. This cooler influence may linger into early Saturday before the wind flow turns more to the southwest and transports Summery air into the region later in the weekend and very early next week, until low pressure and a front approaches by Tuesday with the threat of showers/thunderstorms.

SUMMARY…
A strong southwesterly flow will transport the warmest air of the Spring so far into southeastern New England today. Again, as usual, a modifying effect off the cooler water will impact the South Coast. A cold front settles southward across the region early Tuesday and sits just south of the region as a disturbance moves along it. This will bring more cloudiness and the chance of showers. A second boundary will push down from the north Wednesday. This one will not have any moisture with it but may turn the wind a little more onshore on eastern coastal areas before the boundary weakens and lifts back to the north on Thursday. This will allow it to warm back up a little though not to the levels of today. I’m a little uncertain about how the Friday-Sunday period works out at this time, but for now I’ll lean toward the warmer scenario with a southwest flow to start then a shift to a more southeasterly flow later in the weekend with some cooling, and more cloudiness as a disturbance moves in from the west. The end of week and weekend are low confidence and very subject to change.

SUMMARY…

Low pressure offshore nudges just far enough eastward for some clearing today but throws another batch of clouds back at southeastern New England Wednesday. Another system takes its place late in the week with more cloudiness but for now leaning toward the bulk of any rainfall staying offshore. We’ll see how fast this second system departs as it is the key to the weekend forecast, in terms of the level of improvement. Will lean optimistic for now but keep in mind that if that low doesn’t get out of here fast enough, it will impact the weather at least for the start of the weekend. If high pressure sets up just right we could have a legitimately warm day Monday with the exception of the South Coast, but that is many days away.

SUMMARY…

The cool pool of air over the northeastern US will sink slowly to the southeast and allow a surface low to move southwest then south in the waters east of New England, keeping the weather unsettled through Tuesday. Some improvement is expected by the middle of the week as this feature moves away to the east and a very weak ridge of high pressure tries to move in, but is replaced by low pressure to the south by late in the week with a threat of more unsettled weather. The uncertainty of Spring means it is not clear how quickly the weather will improve heading into next weekend, but for now will go for steady improvement.

SUMMARY…

Yes, it can snow in April. Yes, Boston saw a few flakes early Friday morning. Nothing highly unusual. That was the result of some energy moving through the region underneath an upper level low pressure area, which will remain parked across New England and southeastern Canada into the weekend before drifting southeast and capturing a surface low offshore and driving it westward late in the weekend and early next week. This will turn the current pattern of clouds and sun with pop up showers into a more general overcast with a better chance of some wet weather by later Sunday and Monday before partial improvement takes place heading toward the middle of next week. But another low pressure area may be nearby or just to the south by the end of next week with the threat of additional unsettled weather.
