I’m Dreaming Of A White Halloween

4:30PM

Who would ever have thought we’d have the first white Halloween in parts of eastern MA, well most areas away from the immediate coast. Even more bizzare, knowing the climate around here, is that we could have a white Halloween and possibly a green Christmas? Time will tell on that…

The good news from the weather department is that we are at the start of a lengthy period of quiet weather, and about to enter a mild temperature pattern as well, which will aid in cleanup and recovery from the recent record-setting storm.

Here’s your “quiet” forecast, starting with tonight’s trick or treat forecast for towns that have not postponed it. If your town has, and you want more detail on the weather for the day they are holding it, let me know.

THIS EVENING: Increasing clouds. Temperature falling through the 40s. Wind light E.

OVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 34-39. Wind E under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Decreasing clouds. High 50-55. Wind NE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 30-35. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. High 53-58. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 42. High 60.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Low 39. High 53.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 28. High 44.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 25. High 53.

  1. Hey everyone….. Have not been posting since I lost power Saturday night and won’t be doing that much until power is back. I went through this two months ago with Irene. This is a storm I won’t forget since it had the most snowfall I have seen in October. At least the weather will be quiet this week.
    Happy Halloween!!!

  2. Interesting that the NWS is concerned about storminess Thursday night into Friday, but has kept the forecast for that time period “dry” for now. I have seen no such concern from the TV mets including TK above.

How come NWS can’t jump onboard with everyone else?

  3. Today’s CPC shows a great start to November…well above normal temps and below normal “precipitation”. In my book, that is perfect conditions for leaf raking and pre-winter preparation. Everyone should take full advantage before cold & stormy times become more “permanent”.

  4. Happy November !! Not that its heading this way, but interior Alaska has some cold building, as most interior locations are 5 to 10F below zero this morning……. it is near or above freezing around most of unfrozen Hudson Bay, with eastern Canada being very mild.

Hope to hear that today will be a day for people getting their power back !

  5. I believe most locations away from shoreline have dipped below 30. Logan should go below 32 this weekend.

  6. Skies are brightening gradually in Sudbury. And it is cold out!

Scott – I enjoyed watching that vapor loop, too.

  7. Vapor loop is cool!

Still no power at home in Andover, headed in to work in Framingham, nice to sit at my desk and catch up! Luckily I have a portable generator running solid since sunday morning, rigged it into the furnace so we have heat and fridge, but that’s about it… Kids home for second day. Trick or treating will be Saturday. Town slowly coming back online, but I still see a lot of trees on wires and random wires down… estimates are end of thursday…

  8. This morning Al Roker on the TODAY Show showed NOAA’s Outlook for November and it has normal temps and precip for us in the east, above normal temps and precip for the Midwest and below normal temps for the Rockies.

Assuming this forecast holds, I would say the regime change will be delayed further into at least early December….TK would you agree?

    1. I’m not TK, but looking at the long range GFS for the past several runs, it shows a definite regime shift, although I’m not sure if it’s the long lasting one that runs into January.
Also the NAO and AO are showing signs of going negative in the long range.

    2. The November temperature is for the entire month. A mild pattern for the first 20-25 days for the Northeast that flips to below normal for the last 5 days of the month will unlikely skew the average to near or below normal, yet allow it to remain above normal. So it should not be inferred that a regime change is likely to be delayed based on that particular outlook.

  9. Happy to see quiet weather for this week. I don’t think will have to worry about any snow for a while. Some of the totals were quite impressive.

  10. It’s a real shame that power lines are not underground. Most of Europe has power lines underground. I guess electrical unions would not be happy with me saying that:)

    1. I think some communities have lines underground. Wellesley and part of Belmont hill. They are few and far between. But Europe tends to be ahead of us in instances like that.

    2. Europe does almost everything better than we do. ๐Ÿ˜‰

They even know how to take vacations. America works too many hours. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I wish that was the case Hadi since I am without power for the second time in two months. First with Irene and now this. Thanfully just like Irene relatives of mine have power.

  12. ATTENTION ALL BLOGGERS WHO HAVE LOST POWER:

Dan Rea will have representatives from the power companies on air tonight on WBZ 1030 AM radio at 8:00 pm. It is expected to be a Q & A show w/Dan asking some questions of his own. I hope this will be helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Tx. Nstar just showed up enforce. Looks like we will get our power soon. Sniff :(. Our neighbors just cornered an nstar worker and blasted him. I felt so bad for him I know it’s an inconvenience but there is a mess in many places and only so much can be done.

      1. Hope you get your power back by day’s end or at least sometime this evening, Vicki. Try to tune in to Dan Rea tonight if possible, perhaps even calling in yourself! ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. Hopefully we will be able to listen. Certainly we can go for a ride to charge devices but I suspect well have it back. Guys are up on the pole now

  13. I hope all who want power back have it restored as soon as possible. Fir those of us who enjoy not having power I think we can’t ask for more :). Good luck and please be safe. Still a lot of wires and trees down

  14. Let me go Crazy for a moment. Consider this LONG RANGE GFS prognostication
for 384 hours (16 Days!) from this mornings 12Z GFS run:

    http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/appcontroller?prevPage=Model&MainPage=index&image=&page=Param&cycle=11%2F01%2F2011+12UTC&rname=SFC-LAYER+PARMS&pname=850_temp_mslp_precip&pdesc=&model=GFS&area=NAMER&cat=MODEL+GUIDANCE&fcast=384&areaDesc=North+America+-+US+Canada+and+northern+Mexico&prevArea=NAMER&currKey=model&returnToModel=&imageSize=M

Certainly Some COLDER WEATHER by then. How long it will last? Who knows.
And judging by this, “something” could be cooking (probably and inside runner!).

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  16. I’m just not sure if the general public understands how much time it takes to repair literally thousands of broken wires, street by street, and sometimes house by house, after waiting for trees to be cleared. I realize that sometimes it can be a very long wait, but I don’t think the system we have and the # of workers available permit quick recovery from an event such as this one.

    1. TK,

      So true. Good point.

On the other hand, I don’t think that our utility companies are
really geared up for this sort of thing. I won’t get into the politics of
      it all.

      Cheers

And PS: Sorry about the double post. I entered an incorrect email, so the first one was being moderated. So I posted another. Then the first went through? Oh Well.

    2. We had one neighbor with a pellet stove and generator yell at nstar person. Her daughter lives a mile away with power We had another neighbor going nuts whose mom lives three houses away with power. Worst was neighbor with mOm on oxygen calling for critical care but mom had moved to sons on sat. Every person complaining had alternatives. I’m not sure utility cos can staff for the occasional emergency. When trucks left I flagged them down and thanked them. Every one said it was nice to hear positive comment. It’s only power :). Ok finished with my rant – hehe
